3 1 About this Guide This Guide provides in structions on how to inst all and configure your Cisco Aironet 1700 Series Access Point. This guide also provides mounting in structions and limited troubleshooting procedures. The 1700 Series Access Point is referred to as the access point in this document.

6 4 Unpacking T o unpack the access point , follow these steps: Step 1 Unpa ck and remove the access po int and the accessory kit from the shipping box. Step 2 Re turn any packing material to the shippi n g container and save it for future use. Step 3 V erify that you hav e received the items listed below .

9 Note The Auxiliary Ethernet port is disabled. Do not connect this port to a PoE switch. Connecting the primary and auxiliary ports to a PoE sw itch will not provide additional power . 7 Configuring the Access Point This section describes how to connect the access point to a wireless LAN controller .
10 Note Y ou cannot edit or query any ac ce ss point using the controller CLI i f the name of the access point contains a space. Note Make sure that the controller is set to the curren t time.
11 • Access point mounting options: below a suspended ceiling, on a fla t horizontal surface, or on a desktop. Note Y ou can mount the access point above a su spended ceiling but you must purcha se additional mounting ha rdware: See “Mounting th e Access Po int” sec tion on pag e 14 for additional information.
12 Pre-Installation Configuration Setup The pre-installation configuration setup is shown in Figure 3 . Figure 3 Pre-Installation Confi guration Setup T o perform pre-installati on configuration, perform the following steps: Step 1 Make sure that the Cisco wireless LAN controller DS port is connected to the n etwork.
13 e. CAPW AP UDP ports must not be blocked in the network. f. The access point must be able to find the IP address of the controller . This can be accomplished using DHCP , DNS, or IP subnet broadcast. This guide describes the DHCP method to convey the controller IP addres s.
14 Step 5 If y our access point does not indicate normal operatio n, turn it off and repeat the pre-installation configuration. Note When you are installing a La yer 3 access point on a different subn.
15 c. (Only for APs in Unified configuration) If the LED blinks sequentially for more than 5 minutes, the access point is unable to find its pr imary , secondary , and tertiary Cisco wireless LAN controller.
16 Using DHCP Option 43 Y ou can use DHCP Option 43 to provide a list of c ontroller IP addresses to the access points, enabling them to find and jo in a controller . F o r additional information, refer to the “Configuring DHCP Option 43 and DHCP Option 60” section on pag e 37 .

18 Troubleshooting the Ac cess Point Join Process Note The controller must be running Cisco IOS Softwar e Release 8.0.x.x or later to support 1700 series access points. A detailed explanation of th e join process is on Cisco.com at the following URL: http://www.
19 • An existing access point running software release 8. 0.x.x or later has been reset after clearing the configuration. If any of these conditions are met and the access point has n ot yet joined a controller , y ou can also configure a DHCP server to return a sys log server IP address to the access point using opti on 7 on the server .
