5 Printing from Start to Finish Here’s what to do to print a basic document —such as a photograph, newsletter, or memo—from loadin g the pa per to select ing pri nt setti ngs t o cont rolling the p rint jo b.

7 Opening the Printer Software After you op en your appl ication pro gram and create your documen t, you’re ready to select your prin ter software setting s.
8 Selecting Printer Software Settings Once you click Propert ies , you see your printer software Properties window. The most im portan t thing to remember is to select the type o f paper you’re us ing.

10 Controlling Printin g At the Print dialog box, click OK (or maybe Print ) to sta rt printing. After a m oment , the Progres s Meter ap pears and sho ws the progress of your p rint j ob. You can use the buttons to cancel, pause, or restart printing.
11 Printing on a Macintosh This section describes the basic steps for printing on a Macintosh. (To print wi th Windows, see page 6.) Loading Pap er Make sure yo ur printer and computer are turned on. 14 Controlling Printin g Once you’ve clicked Print , yo ur document begins printing. If you turned on background printing i n the Chooser, you can select EPSON Monitor3 from the Applicat ion me nu at the right side o f the menu ba r to check the progre ss of your print job.
15 Using PhotoEnh ance, Custom, and Advanced Settings When you’ re printing special p rojects, yo u can customi ze your printer s oftware settings, as described in these sections: ■ “Using Photo.

18 Using Special Papers How can you get the best-loo king photos, most vivid colors, and sharpest te xt? Always use EPSON’ s special ink jet papers. To show you how much di fference EPSON paper can make, we’ve included some free sample s. You always need to ch oose the rig ht Media Type setting for your paper.
19 4-Inch Wide Ro ll Paper Follow th ese steps to load th e roll pap er: 1. Make sure yo ur printer and computer are turne d on. 2. Before loading the paper, make sure the edge is cut cleanly—at a 90 degree angle in each cor ner—to ens ure prope r loading.
20 5. Load the e nd of the p aper into t he printer a s far as it wil l go, then slide the left edge guide agai nst the paper. 6. Gently hold t he paper in place o n the top as your press a nd relea se the E load /eject button to fe ed the pa per into th e printer.
21 Removing and Storing Ro ll Paper When you finish a print jo b on roll paper, yo u can position the pa per for anot her roll paper print j ob or remove it fro m the pri nter. Follow these step s: 1. Pres s th e E load/eject button. The printer prin ts a small l ine on th e roll pa per to sho w you wh ere to cut it an d feeds th e paper forward.
22 Roll Paper Basics Whenever you print on roll paper, you must select o r deselect these basic options to use the paper correctly: ■ Alwa ys select the correct Media Typ e setting ( Premium Gl ossy Photo P aper for the 4-inch wide roll that came with the p rinter).
23 4 x 6-inch Photo Paper The EPSON 4 × 6-inch Photo Paper that cam e with your print er is micro- perforate d around the edges s o you can trim your printout s and “bl eed” the photo—exte nd it beyond th e perforatio ns—on all s ides.
24 4. Choo se Photo Paper 4 × 6 in as the Pape r S ize settin g. 5. After you prin t your picture , fold the pa per back and forth along the perfor ations and carefully tear off t he margins. If your p rintout d oesn’t exten d beyo nd the perf orations o n the paper, try set ting the pr int orie ntati on in you r printer driver.
25 Matte Paper - Heavyweight Matte Paper - Heavyweig ht has a professional-looking, flat mat t e finish for pri nting photos , graphics, and di gital fine art on a non-glos sy surface.
26 Selecting Your Paper Type Your printer a utomatically ad justs itself for the type of paper you select in your printer software. That’s why the Me dia Type setting is so import ant. It tel ls your printe r what kind of pape r you’re using an d adjusts th e ink coverage accordingly.

29 Working with Your Memory Stick Image E xpert starts autom a tically wh en you insert your Memo ry Stick into the PC card adap ter in the printer’s PC card slot. This chapter expla ins how to use Ima ge Expert to view, co py, and print your photos.
30 Inserting and Removing the Memory Stick This section explains ho w to insert and remove your Memory S tick and adapter, and gives so me important gu idelines for usin g your Memory Stick. It also explains how to disable the automati c launch of Image Expert, if you prefer to us e a different applica tion.

34 Using Image Expert with Your Memory Stick The ea siest w ay to view an d prin t phot os on your Mem ory St ick is to use Ima ge Expert. You can correct your photos , add special effects, organize them on your hard drive, and prin t as many photos a t a time as you want.
35 Thumbnails of the pictures on your card appear in Image Expert’s work area. Now you’re ready to copy them to your hard drive. What to Do If You See an E rror Message When you try to vie w images on your Me mory Stick, you ma y see a m essage like th is: Follow these ste ps to correct it: 1.
36 2. In the Connect Vi a box, select PC Ca rd . 3. Click OK . Copying Photos to Your Computer To correct or print phot os us ing Image Expe rt, you need to copy them to your hard drive. You can copy all the pictures on your Memory S tick, or just selected pict ur es.

38 Printing Photos on 4-Inch Wide Ro ll Paper This section explains how to print continuous, edge-to-edge photos on your roll paper. Ma ke sure you’ve copie d your pictures to your hard dr ive before you be gin. Windows Instr uctions 1. Follow th e instructions on page 19 to load th e roll pap e r.
39 10. Select 4 × 6 from the layout list in the Im a ge Expert toolbar. Your first image appea r s on the screen. (To view all of your images in th e sequence in which th ey’ll print, click the Next Page button.) 11. If your ph oto is no t already in land scape orie ntation, cli ck the Landsca pe button.
40 3. Make any corrections yo u wa nt to the photos. Remember to double-c lick eac h image t o open it b efore you make any edits . If you edit an image without op ening it , you can’t u ndo the changes . 4. If you only wa nt to prin t sele cted im ages, click th e thumbn ails fo r the ima ges you want while hol ding down the Option key.
41 Printing P hotos on 4 x 6-Inch Photo Paper This proced ure lets you p rint your phot os so they extend slight ly beyond th e perforation s on your paper. Be fore you begin, make sure you’ ve copied your images to your hard drive. Windows Instr uctions 1.
42 10. In the Image Expert to olbar, select EPSON Photo Paper 4 × 6 from the la yout lis t. Then click the Landsca pe button, if yo u r photo is not already in landscape orien tation.
43 7. Click Options , and select Phot o Paper as th e Med ia Type. 8. Click OK , then click OK again to close your printer software. 9. In the Image Expert too lbar, s elect EPSON Photo Paper 4 × 6 i n from the la yout list. 10. Click the Print button.
44 Using Adobe PhotoDeluxe wit h Your Memory Stick You can also use PhotoDeluxe to a ccess your Memory Stick. You can print only one photo at a time, but you can print mu ltiple copies of the same photo. Follow th ese steps to access the images on your Me mory Stick: 1.
45 2. Windows: Click the Get & Fix Photo tab, then click the Get Photo icon and select Open File . Macintosh: Click the Get Photo button, t h en click the Get Phot o tab a nd select Open File . 3. 46 Uploading Phot os to Your Memory Stick To upload photos from your com p uter to your Memo r y Stick, EPSON USB RW Switcher must be installed o n your computer. US B RW Switcher lets you toggle between read-on ly mode and write-to -disk mode on your Memory Stick.
47 4. Close Image Expe rt, if necessary. 5. Use Wi ndows Exp lorer or the Macintos h Find command to locate the photos yo u want to upload on yo ur hard drive. 6. Use Windows Explorer or search your Macintosh desktop for the drive assigned to your Memo ry Stick.

49 Maintaining Your Printer This sect ion describes main tenance procedures to keep yo ur printer worki ng at its be st and prepar ation steps for mo ving your prin ter.
50 Follow th ese steps to run the Head Clea ning utility: 1. Make sure th e printer is turne d on but not printi ng, and both the B black and A color ink out lights are off.
51 7. If the no zzle check pattern has n o gaps in its dots, cli ck Finish . If the patte rn is missing dots, cli ck Clean to clea n the print head again. If you don’t s e e an y improvement afte r cleaning thre e or four times, check t he soluti ons in “Problems Getting Good Print Qu ality” on page 65.
52 Replacing an Ink Cartridge When th e B bla ck or A color i nk out light flash es, the indica ted cartridge is lo w on ink. This is a good time to make sure you have a new cartridge. When the light stays on, the c artridge is empt y and you need t o replace it.
53 Removing and Installin g Ink Cartridges Be sure you have a new ink cartridg e before you beg in. Once you start the ink cartri dge repl acem ent pro cedur e, you must com plete all th e step s in one sessi on. Follow th ese steps to repl ace ink cartridges: 1.
54 6. Unwrap the new ink cartridge. Then remove the yellow tape seal o n top. 7. Tilt the i nk cartridge forward slightly as you lowe r it into its h older .
55 8. Press down the ink cartridge clamp u ntil it locks in place. (The color clamp is a bi t harder to close t han the black clamp.) 9. If you n eed to re place the othe r ink cartridge, repeat steps 4 through 8 before continuing with step 10. 10. Press the ora nge ink cartridge replace ment button and close the pri n ter cover.
56 3. Windows : Click th e Uti lity tab. Macintosh : Click the Utility button. 4. You see the Utility menu. Click th e Print Head Alignment button. 5. Follow th e instructions on the screen to print a test pa ge. 6. Sele ct the mos t precise alignm ent patter n from th e choices on the test page.
57 Transportin g the Printer If you move your p r inter some distance , you need to prepare it for transportation in its or iginal bo x or one of a sim ilar size. Fol low these steps: To avoid damag e , always leave the ink ca rtridges installed w hen transp o rting the printer.

60 Follow th e guidelines belo w when you che ck the contro l panel lights. P is on The P power light is on when the printer is ready to print. It flashes when the printer is receiving a print job, c harging ink, or cleaning the print head.
61 Running a Prin ter Check You can run a pri n ter che ck to dete rmine whether a probl em comes from the printe r itself o r some other s o urce. Fo llow these ste ps: 1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off. 2. Disconnect the interface cable from the printer.

Problems Settin g Up the Printer or Installing Software The printer star ted making noise after ink cartridge installation.
64 Problems with Printing Only the P power light is on, but nothing p rints. ■ Make sure the interface cable is con necte d secure ly and that the c able meets th e system require ments on pa ge 79 or page 80. ■ Run a printer ch eck as described on page 61.
65 Problems Ge tting Good Print Quality You see horizontal banding. ■ Make sure the prin t head nozzles a re not clo gged. To clean the print head, see page 49. ■ Make sure the Medi a Type setting match es th e pape r you loade d. See page 26 for guidel ines.
66 Your printout is blurry or smeared. ■ Make sure your paper isn ’t damp or loaded face do wn. If it’s damp, reload a new stack of p aper. ■ Use a support sheet, o r loa d your paper o ne sh eet at a time. ■ Make sure your paper me ets the specificati ons listed in your electro nic Reference Guide .
67 You see wrong or missi ng colors. ■ Make sure the In k setting is se t to Color for color images and your applicatio n is set for color printi ng. ■ Make sure the prin t head nozzles a re not clo gged. To clean the print head, see page 49. ■ Make sure a n ink cartridge isn’t low on ink.
68 Problems with th e Memory Stick You get a message that t he camera connection failed, or you don’t see the View PC Card Images button on Image Expert’s toolbar. ■ Make sure yo ur connection is s et to PC C ard . Se lect Connection from Image Expert’s Camera menu, or click Connection on the message window.
69 The photo s on your Memory S tick appear in the Image Exper t work area, but you can’t p rint them. You have to copy the photo s to an album on your hard drive before you can print them (see page 36 for instructions).
70 Problems with P aper Feeding Paper doesn’t feed. Remove the pa per an d chec k that it: ■ Isn’t curled or creased ■ Isn’t too old ■ Isn’t loaded above the a rrow on the left edge guide ■ Isn’t jammed in side the printe r. (If the S paper o ut light is flashi ng, paper is jammed.
71 Solving Miscellaneo us Printout Problems The ma rgins are i ncorrect . ■ Make sure the pa per settings i n your printer software are correct for your pa per size. See th e electr onic R eference Guide for instructions. ■ Check your s oftware documentatio n for instructions on selecting the correct margins for your pape r size.
72 Uninstalling Printer Software If you need to uninstall and then reinstall yo ur printer softw a re, such as when you upgrade your computer operating syst em, follow thes e steps : Uninstalling Win dows 98 Software 1.
