7 Printing from Start to Finish Here’s how to print a basic document—such as a photograph, award certificate , or graphic—from loading the pape r to making printer sett ings to starting the print job.
8 Once you’ve se lected your paper, make sure the printer an d computer are turne d on. Then load th e paper by placin g it again st the right edg e guid e; slide the left edge gui de aga inst the pape r to ho ld it i n plac e.
9 Making Basic Printer Settings After you crea te your docum ent in an a pplicatio n, such a s Adobe ® Photo shop , ® you need to make certa in printer s ettings to ensu re that y our imag es look as good on pap er as they do on the screen. From the F ile menu , click Page Setup .
10 Once you click Propert ies , you see your printe r’s Propertie s dia log box. The mos t importa nt set ting you’ ll make is for the typ e of pap er you’re usi ng. Th is lets the prin ter optimiz e ink out put for that p aper, and can greatly a ffect image quality.
11 Making Paper Settings Now click the Paper tab to displ ay the setting s shown below: Make the following sele ctions: ■ Set the Paper So urce t o Sheet Feeder if you’ re prin ting on singl e shee ts o f paper.
12 Starting the Print Job You see your a pplicatio n’s Print d ialog box: Click OK (or Prin t ) to start prin ting. After a mo ment, the Prog ress Meter appea rs and shows the progress of your print job. You can use the buttons to cancel, pause, or restart p rinting.
13 Keeping the Settin gs You Use Most Often The print er settin gs you ma ke apply only t o the appl ication y ou’re curre ntly using. If you usually print one type of do cument in different applications—for example, Premium S emiglos s Photo Pa per wi th no ma rgin s—you can ch ange the default printer se ttings for all your p rograms.

15 Making Paper Settings After creating your document in an applicati on, such as Photoshop, you’re ready to prin t it using you r EPSON printe r. From the F ile menu , click Page Setup .
16 Making Basic Printer Settings Now open th e File men u and cli ck Print . You see the p rinter setting s dialog box for your application (your dialog box may loo k slightly different): The mos t importa nt set ting you’ ll make is for the typ e of pap er you’re usi ng.
17 Starting the Print Job Click Print to print your d ocument. If you turned on background printing i n the Chooser, you can select EPSON Monitor3 from the Applicat ion me nu at the right side o f the menu ba r to check the progre ss of your print job.
18 Making Advanced Settings Your printer software includes powerful features that let you imp rove the appearance of dig ital imag es and co ntrol yo ur pr inter’s us e of colo r.
19 Using Preset Project T ypes Your printer s oftware includes pro ject types wi th pres et print ing optio ns. This let s you quickly se lect the be st se ttings fo r your particular type of docume nt, or sele ct a color-matchin g method for your project.
20 The defa ult Gamm a setting of 1.8 provid es the optimum co ntrast f or your photos . However, y ou can c hange it to eithe r 1.5 (for decreas ed cont rast) or 2.
21 Using Color Manag ement Profiles If you’re prin ting in Adobe Photo shop using a color man agement profi le created in another prog ram, you’ll n eed to turn of f your printe r’s colo r manage ment feat ures to get accurat e results.
22 Using EPSON Papers and E nvelopes How can you get the be st-looking photos, mo st vivid colors, and sharpest i mages? Always use EPSON ’s spe cial in k jet pape rs. To show you how much difference EPSON paper can make, we’ve included some free sam ples.
23 Archival Matte Paper Archival Matte Paper has a professional-looking, flat matte finish for printing photos, graphics, and digital fine art on a smooth, non-glossy surface. Keep the following in mind w hen p rint ing on t his pape r: ■ Always load it with the w hiter side face-up.
24 Watercolor Paper–Radiant Wh ite Watercolor Paper–Radiant Whi te has the loo k and feel of texture d watercolor papers typicall y used by artis ts.
25 Choosing the Correct Media Type Setting Before printi ng, alwa ys check th e Me dia Type setti ng in your printer software. See t he table belo w for the settin gs you s hould us e. This sett ing is im portant beca use it tel ls your printer what kind of paper you’re using.

27 Using Roll Paper Before printing , you need to decide on the size and type of roll pa per that ’s best-s uited to you r proje ct. Ch oose f rom the se varie ties: ■ EPSON Premium Lus ter Photo Paper, 8.
28 Loading Roll Paper 1. Before loadi ng the roll , make su re th e edge is cut cle anly—at a 90-degree angle in each corner—to ensure proper loadin g. If necessa ry, trim the edge using a straigh t-edge tool or tri angle. 2. To make loading easier, roll the first several inches of the paper backward to uncurl it.
29 4. Insert t he roll p aper onto the spindle , making sur e it’s oriented as sho wn here. Then plac e the spi ndle wit h the roll paper onto t he holde r. 5. Load the e nd of the p aper into t he printer a s far as it wi ll go, then slide th e left e dge guide agai nst the p aper.
30 Printing on Roll Paper You control th e way you prin t on roll pa per by se lecting th e right com bination of printer se ttings for your document. Y ou can print with smal l side ma rgins, wi thou.
31 You see your printer’ s Properti es dialo g box: 5. Click the Main tab, if necessary. Select the correct Media Type setti ng for your paper. (If you’re n ot sure which settin g to us e, see “C hoosin g the Correct Media Type Setting ” on page 25.
32 8. Click OK to apply the new sett ings. The n do one of the followi ng: ■ If you already see your appl ication’s Print dialog box, conti nue on to step 9. ■ If you see a dialog bo x with a different name (such as Page S etup in Photoshop), cli ck OK again.
33 4. Sele ct these set tings: ■ Roll Pape r as the Paper Source; this leaves a margin of at least 0.12 inch (3 mm) on both sides of your printout or Roll Paper –No Marg ins if you want to p rint your im age edge -to-edge (available only at certain paper widths: 4, 8.
34 After you finish y our printout , you can l eave t he paper in place and sta rt an other print job imm ediately after it. I f you wish to make a dividin g line be tween prin t jobs, press the E load/eje ct button . The printer p rints a small l ine on th e roll pa per to s how yo u where to cut it and feeds the pap er forward.
35 Printing on Pape r Cut from a Roll If you want to p rint on paper cut from a roll with out using the rol l paper ho lder, follow th ese steps : 1. Before loadi ng the pa per, cut it to the desired l ength of your i mage plus two inches for th e nece ssary ma rgins.
36 4. Gently ho ld the paper in place as you press and r elease the E load/eject button to fe ed the pap er into the printe r. Avoi d hand ling the paper e xces sivel y to p reven t contamination with dirt or grease. (If the paper doesn’t fe ed properly, li ft the paper out and then reload it .
37 Maintaining Your Printer This secti on describes m aintena nce procedures to keep your printer wo rking its best and prepar ation s teps for mo ving your prin ter.
38 3. If you have an application running, access the printer sett ings dialog box as described on page 9 (Window s) or page 16 (Macintosh). Or, with Windows, cli ck Start , point to Settings , then sele ct Printers .
39 Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern A good noz zle che ck pattern s hould look s omething like this : Each line in t he pattern shou ld be complet e, with no gaps or missing do ts. If your prin tout l ooks okay , you ’re don e. If any dots are missing, as show n below, clean t he print head again; see page 37 for instructions.
40 Replacing an Ink Cartridge When th e B bla ck or A color i nk out light f lash es, the indica ted cart ridge is lo w on ink. This is a good time to make sure you have a new cartridge. When the light stays on, the c artrid ge is empt y and y ou need t o repla ce it.
41 Removing and Installin g Ink Cartridges Be sure you have a new ink cartridg e before you beg in. Once you start the ink cartri dge repl acem ent pro cedur e, you must com plete all th e step s in one sessi on. Follow th ese steps to repl ace ink cartridg es: 1.
42 6. Unwrap the new ink cartridge. Then remove the yellow tape seal o n top. 7. Tilt the i nk cartridge forward slightly as you lowe r it into its h older .
43 8. Lower the ink cartridg e clamp and press it down to lock it in p lace. (The color cl amp is a bit harder to close than the bl ack clamp.) 9. If you need to re place the other ink ca rtridge, repeat steps 4 through 8 before continuing with step 10.
44 2. If you have an application running, access the printer sett ings dialog box as described on page 9 (Window s) or page 16 (Macintosh). Or, with Windows, cli ck Start , point to Settings , then sele ct Printers . Right-cl ick your EPSON Stylus Photo 2000P printer icon.
45 Cleaning the Printer To keep your printer workin g its best, you should clean it several times a year. Follow these st eps: 1. Turn off the printer an d wait for the P power l ight to go out. 2. Unplug the powe r cord and disconnect the printer cable.
46 6. Wipe off in k from th e rollers using the dampen ed cleanin g tool as sho wn. If the paper ejects before yo u finish cleaning, press the E load/e ject button to fee d anot her shee t into the pr inte r. 7. When you’re finished, turn the printer off.

48 P is on The P power light is on when the printer is ready to print. It flashes when the printer is receiving a print job, c harging ink, or cleaning the print head. S flashes When the S paper out light flashes, you have a pa per jam. Press the E load/eject button to try to clear the jam.
49 Running a Prin ter Check You can run a pri nter check t o determ ine wheth er a problem co mes from th e printer itself o r some other s ource. Fo llow thes e steps : 1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off. 2. Disconnect the interface cable from the printer.

51 Problems and Solutions Here are s ome tro ubleshoot ing ti ps if you h ave an y prob lems se tting up your printer, installi ng softwa re, getting good pri nt qual ity, feeding paper, or oth er problems. Problems Settin g Up the Printer or Installing Software The printer star ted making noise after ink cartridge installation.
52 Problems with P rinting Only the P power light is on, but nothing p rints. ■ Make sure the in terfac e cable is connecte d securely and th at the cable meet s the system require ments on pa ge 61 or page 62. ■ Run a printer ch eck as described on page 49.
53 Problems Getting Good Prin t Quality You see banding (light lines on the printout). ■ Make sure the prin t head n ozzles ar e not clo gged. To cle an the print head, see page 37. ■ Make sure the Medi a Type s etting match es th e pape r you loade d.
54 Your printout is blurry or smeared. ■ Make sure your paper isn ’t damp or curled, or loaded face do wn. If it’s damp or curled, reload new paper. ■ Use a support sheet o r load your paper o ne sh eet at a time. ■ Make sure your paper me ets the specificati ons in the e lectron ic Reference Guide .
55 You see wrong or missi ng colors. ■ Make sure a n ink cartridge isn’t too old or low on ink. To replace an ink cartridge, see page 40. ■ Make sure the In k setti ng is se t to Color for color images and your applicatio n is se t for color printi ng.
56 Problems with P aper Feeding Too many copies are printing. Make sure you’ve selected th e correct number of copi es in your printe r settin gs and app licatio n. Paper doesn’t eject fully or is wrinkled. ■ If th e pape r do esn’t e jec t ful ly, you may hav e set the wr ong p aper size.
57 Solving Miscellaneo us Printout Problems The ma rgins are i ncorrect . ■ Make sure yo u’ve selected the correct pa per size i n your printer settings. See page 11 (Windows) or page 15 (Macintosh). ■ Check your a pplica tion’ s instructions on selecti ng the correct margin s for your pa per size.
