The sa fet y belt pre tensioners a t the front sea ting positions are designed t o tighten the sa fety bel ts when activa ted . In frontal and near-fr ontal crashe s, the saf ety bel t pret ensioners may be ac tivat ed alone or , if the cra sh is of sufficient severit y , toge ther with the front airba gs.

The l ap belt portion of a combina tion lap and shoul der belt should be positioned l ow across the hips bel ow the belly and w orn as tight a s comfort will allo w . The shoul der belt shoul d be positioned t o cross the middle of the shoulder and the c enter of the chest.
How t o Use the Automatic Locking Mode E142591 1. Buckle the c ombination l ap and shoulder bel t. 2. Gra sp the shoulder portion and pull downw ard until the entire bel t is pulled out. Allo w the belt t o retra ct. As the bel t retr acts, y ou will hear a clicking sound.
S AFETY BEL T W ARNING LAMP AND INDIC A TOR CHIME This l amp illuminat es and an audibl e warning will sound if the driver's sa fet y belt has not be en fa stened when the v ehicle's ignition is turned on. Conditions of oper ation Then... If.

The P ersonal Sa fety S yst em provides an impro ved ov erall l evel of front al crash prot ection to fr ont seat oc cupants and is designed t o help further reduce the risk of airbag-r elat ed injuries.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERA TION W ARNINGS Airbags do not infl at e slowl y or gentl y , and the risk of injury from a deplo ying airbag is the gre ates t close to the trim c overing the airba g module.
DRIVER AND P AS SENGER AIRBA GS W ARNINGS Nev er place y our arm or any objects ov er an airbag module . Placing y our arm ov er a deploying airba g can resul t in serious arm frac tures or other injuries.

SIDE CURT AIN AIRBA GS W ARNINGS Do not plac e objects or mount equipment on or near the he adliner at the sider ail that ma y come into conta ct with a deplo ying side curtain airbag. F ailure t o foll ow these instructions may incr ease the risk of per sonal injury in the ev ent of a crash.
The design and de velopment of the side curtain airba gs included re commended tes ting procedur es that wer e devel oped by a gr oup of automotive sa fet y experts known a s the Side Airbag T echnical W orking Group . These r ecommended tes ting procedur es help reduce the risk of injuries rel at ed to the deplo yment of side curtain airba gs.
• The knee airba g may depl oy based on cra sh severit y and occupant conditions. • The design of the side airba gs and side curtain airba gs is to depl oy in certain side impact cr ashes. T hese device s may depl oy in other types of cr ashes if your v ehicle experienc es sufficient sidewa ys motion or def ormation.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERA TION MyK ey allo ws you t o program k eys with restric ted driving modes t o promote g ood driving habits. All but one of the k eys progr ammed to the vehicl e can be activ ated with the se restrict ed modes. Any k eys that ha ve not been pr ogrammed are r eferred t o as administr at or key s or admin k eys.
CREA TING A MYKEY Use the informa tion displa y to crea te a MyK ey: 1. Insert the ke y you want t o program int o the ignition. If your v ehicle is equippe d with a push-butt on start, plac e the remot e control int o the backup slot. The l ocation of y our backup sl ot is in another chapter .
S witch the ignition on using an admin k ey or fob . T o clear all MyK eys of all MyK ey settings, a ccess the main menu and scroll t o: Action and Description Messag e Pr ess the OK button. Set tings Pr ess the OK button. MyK ey Pr ess and hold the OK butt on until the foll owing messag e displa ys.
CHECKING MYKEY S Y STEM S T A TUS Y ou can find inf ormation about y our progr ammed MyK eys by using the informa tion displa y . MyK ey Distanc e T rack s the distance when driv ers use a MyK ey . T he only wa y to dele te the acc umulat ed distance is b y using an admin ke y to cle ar all MyK eys.

LOCKING AND UNLOCKING Remot e Control Unlocking the Door s Note: The driver door can be unl ocked with the ke y if the remote c ontrol is not functioning. Note: When you l ock your vehicl e for sev eral week s, the remot e control will be swit ched off.
Unlocking the Door s With the Interior Door Handl es Y ou can unl ock individual doors by pulling the rel evant int erior door handle. P ulling the driver int erior door handle will unl ock all the doors, if aut o unlock ha s been enable d.

W ARNING Y our vehicl e does not lock it self automa ticall y . If you do not pre ss a locking but ton your v ehicle will remain unl ocked . Locking but tons are l ocat ed on each of the front doors. For centr al locking and t o arm the alarm, press a l ocking button onc e.

The handl e is loc ated inside the l uggag e compartment either on the l uggag e compartment door (lid) or ne ar the tail lamps. It is composed of a ma terial that will glo w for hours in darkne ss follo wing brief expo sure to ambient light.
P AS SIVE ANTI-THEFT S Y STEM Note: The sy stem is not comp atible with non-Ford a ftermarke t remote st art syst ems. Use of these s ystems ma y result in v ehicle starting probl ems and a loss o f security prot ection.
Y ou must hav e two pr eviously progr ammed coded k eys and the new unprogr ammed key r eadil y accessibl e. S ee your authoriz ed dealer t o hav e the spare ke y programmed if t wo previousl y progr ammed coded k eys are not a vailabl e. R ead and understand the entir e procedur e bef ore you begin.
V ehicles with K eyl ess Entry Note: A valid passiv e key mus t be loca ted within the det ection rang e of that door f or ke yless entry . See K eyless Entry (pag e 59). Note: If you use a car w ash with a waxing cycl e, mak e sure that y ou remove the w ax from the windshiel d and the wiper blades.

GENERAL INF ORMA TION Condensa tion in L amp Assemblies Ext erior lamps hav e vents t o acc ommodat e normal changes in air pressur e. Condensa tion can be a na tural by-pr oduct of this design. When moist air ent ers the lamp a ssembly thr ough the vents, ther e is a possibility tha t condensation c an occur when the temper ature is c old .
High Beams E101829 Pull the l ever full y tow ard you t o switch the high beams on. Pull the l ever full y tow ard you a gain to swit ch the high beams off. Headlamp Flasher Pull the l ever t owar d you slightly and rel ease it t o fla sh the headlamps.
INS TRUMENT LIGHTING DIMMER E156652 HEADLAMP EXIT DELA Y Aft er you swit ch the ignition off, you c an swit ch the headlamps on b y pulling the direc tion indicat or lev er tow ard you.

1. Clos e the window twice until it r eaches the point of resist ance and le t it rev erse. 2. Clos e the window a third time t o the point of resist ance. Y ou disabled the bounce-back f ea ture and you can no w clos e the window manually . The window tr avel s past the point of resist ance and you c an close it full y .
Mov e the controll er in the direction of the arro ws to adjust the mirr or . Fold-A way Ext erior Mirrors Push the mirr or tow ard the door window gla ss. Make sur e that you full y engag e the mirror in its support when r eturning it to its original position.
Note: Do not cle an the housing or glass o f any mirror with har sh abrasive s, fuel or other petrol eum or ammonia-base d cleaning product s. Y ou can a djust the interior mirror t o your pref erence . Some mirror s also have a second piv ot point. This l ets you mo ve the mirror he ad up or down and from side t o side.

W ARNING Driving your v ehicle with the warning lamp on is dang erous. A significant decre ase in braking perf ormance may oc cur . It will tak e you long er to stop your v ehicle. Ha ve your v ehicle check ed by your authoriz ed dealer imme diatel y .
High Beam Indicat or It will illumina te when you s witch the high beam hea dlamps on. It will fla sh when you use the headl amp fla sher . Ignition W arning L amp If it illumina tes when y ou are driving, this indica tes a malfunction. S witch off all unnece ssary electric al equipment.
Normally , the service engine soon light will sta y on until the engine is cranked , then turn itself off if no mal functions are present. Howev er , if aft er 15 seconds the service engine soon light blink s eight times, it means tha t the vehicle is not r eady f or I/M tes ting.
