23 Getting Ready How to replac e the xD-Picture Card Push the xD-Picture Card into the slot and then slowly remove your finger. The lock is released and the xD-Picture Card is pushed out. CAUTIO N • Whe n storing xD-Picture Card s, make sure that they are kept out of the reach of children.

35 Using the Camera Flash Change the flash mode when you wan t to take pictures without flash. See p.75 for information on flash. 4 Press the shutter button fully. CAU TION When taking a picture using the flash, the image may disappear and go dark briefly due to flash charging.
36 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mo de) Compatibl e filters 58 mm-diameter commercial available filters can be attached. CAUTIO N • Do n ot use more than one filter at a time. • The lens cap (included) may not be used when attaching the filter. CAUTIO N • The image shown on the screen before the picture is taken may differ in brightness, color, etc.
37 Using the Camera Using Intelligent Face De tection when taking pictures Intelligent Face Det ection allows you to focus on and adjust the brightn ess of people’s faces. Intelligent Face Detection is effective with the camera held horizontally or vertically.
38 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mo de) Subjects not suitable for Intell igent Face Det ection Intelligent Face Detection automatically focuses on a face(s) turned towards the camera. However, difficulties will occur with the Intelligent Face Detection mode in the following situations: • The face is obscured by glasses, sunglasses, a hat or hair.
39 Using the Camera Taking pictures with the focus and exposure locked In the above composit ion, the subj ects are not in the AF frame. Pre ssing the shu tter b utton halfwa y at this poin t will result in the su bjects being out of f ocus.
40 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mo de) 3 Continue t o hold the shut ter butt on down halfway. Move the camera back to the original image and p ress the shutter b utton full y.
41 Using the Camera AF-assist illuminat or Use this illuminator to focus on th e subject in dimly lit conditions. When p ressing t he shutter button down hal fway, th e camera fires the AF-assist illuminator (gre en) while focusing on your subje ct.
42 Taking Pictures ( AUTO Mo de) CHECK When using digital zoom, appears in the bottom left corner of the screen and the zoom bar color changes. MEMO Press again to cancel digital zoom. Adjusting the shot composition Select the screen display. Press DISP/B ACK to cha nge the screen disp lay.

66 Setting t he Shoot ing Mode CAUTIO N Aperture By adjusting the aperture, you can change the depth of focus (depth of field). Selecting a larger number o f aperture (closed) obtains a larger depth of focus. Selecting a smaller number of aperture (open) has the area in front of and behind the subject out of focus.
