ABOUT THIS MANUAL Thank you for buying the Fujitsu DL7400 dot matrix printer . You can expect years of reliable service with v ery little maintenance. This manual explains how to use yo ur printer to full adv antage. It is written for both new and experienced printer users.

1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION Congratulations on purchasi ng this printe r . This printer is a compact, versatile, flat paper path printer that offers maximum compatibility with today’s software packages and personal com puters. The 24-wire print head provides crisp, clear pri nting for business, office, and home environm ents.
INTRODUCTION • Large print buffer . 128K bytes are availabl e in total for stori ng input data and downloadi ng fonts. A large input dat a buffer allows you to sen d fi les to the p rin ter an d return to work in your application. A large download buffer allows you t o use custom fonts.
INTRODUCTION Printer add-on op tions are listed below. For details, see Ch apter 8. OPTIONS • Cut sheet feeder . The SF940 single-bin feeder is avail able as an option. Two cut sheet feeders can be instal led in front of and behind the printer at the same time.

2 CHAPTER 2 SETTING UP SETTING UP Your new printer is easy to install and set up. This chapter tells you ho w to set up the prin ter and start printing right away. If this is y our first printer, you should read the enti re chapter before attempting to use the prin ter.
SETTING UP 9 Use only the power cord supplied wi th the printer or recomm ended by your dealer. Do not use an ext ension cord. 9 Do not plug the p rinter into a power o utlet that is shared with heavy industrial equi pment, such as m otors, or appliances, or such as copiers or coffee makers.
SETTING UP 2. Carefully examine each item for damage. Report any problem s to your dealer or shipping agent. 3. Place the printer where you plan to use it. 4. Remove t he tapes and cushions securing the printe r. Open the front cover and remove the shippi ng restraint cardboard that holds the print head carriage in place (shown below).

SETTING UP This section explains how t o setting the paper table and ri bbon cartridge. ASSEMBLING THE PRINTER Setting the paper table Turn the paper table (1) as shown in the tabl e below, then push it (2) and set it (3). The complete set up conditions are shown below.
SETTING UP Handling the paper table You must open and close the paper t able when you feed continuous forms using the front t ractor or you att ach the cut sheet f eeder to the front of the printer. Normal mode The following figure shows the paper tabl e in normal m ode.

SETTING UP Installing the Ribbon cartridge (HOT) CAUTION <HOT> The print head and metal frame is hot during printing or immediately after printing.
SETTING UP 4. Remove the ri bbon cartridge from i ts package. Push in the two ribbon release tabs. The tabs snap int o the cartridge and the ribbon feed mechanism engages. Turn the ribbon f eed knob clockwise to be sur e that it feeds properly. Preparing the ribbon cartridge 5.
SETTING UP 6. Press the ribbon release levers in ward until the mounting pins snap into the holes of the ribbon support bracket s. Gently pull on t he cartridge to be sure that the pins are secure in the holes. 7. Turn the ribbon feed knob clockwise to take up any slack in the ribbon.
SETTING UP Mounting and removing the tractor unit Tractor unit at the front [Removing the t ractor unit] Raise the cut sheet table. Wh ile pressing the lock levers of the tractor frames locat ed on both sides of the tractor unit , lift out the tractor unit to remove it.
SETTING UP 3) Verify that the hooks on both sides of t he tractor unit are securely hooked onto guide pin 2 as shown in the fol lowing figure. SETTING UP [Mounting the tractor uni t] 1) Position the U-shaped slot s on both sides of the tractor uni t over the guide pins of the printer unit. (To set the tractor unit in position, line it up with the groove of the left guide pin. The right guide pin has no groove).
SETTING UP Now that your prin ter is assembled, take a moment to become fam iliar with its major parts. GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH YOUR PRINTER Looking at the printer from the front right si de and rear left side, you can see the parts of the printer shown in the figure bel ow.
SETTING UP Before you plug in t he printer: CONNECTING THE POWER CORD 9 Make sure that the printer power i s switched off. The side mark ed “ { ” on the power switch should be depressed. 9 Make sure that the power outle t is properly grounded. 9 Make sure that you use the power cord shipped wi th the printer.
SETTING UP At this point, load paper and run the printer self-test. The self-test ch ecks printer performance and print quality before you connect the printer to the computer. Use eit her single sheets or continuous form s (see Chapter 3). This section describes the self-test procedure using single sheets.
SETTING UP Printing the Self-Test The printer has a bu ilt-in self-test program. The self-test prints th e firmware version, the nam es of the pr inter’s resident emulati ons, and all of the characters availa ble in the emulations. The self-test prints 8 0 characters per line.

SETTING UP NOTE The printer can also print a special “demo pattern” that illustrates some of the printer’s capabilities. To print the demo pattern: 1. Load a sheet of paper (A4 or larger). 2. Turn the printer off . 3. While pressing the FRONT DIR button, turn the printer back on.

SETTING UP Your printer supports one of the following interface options: CONNECTING THE PRINTER TO YOUR COMPUTER • Centronics parallel interface+RS-232C serial interface • Centronics parallel interface+USB (+LAN) interface The parallel interface connector has wire clips.
SETTING UP Selecting a USB Cable 9 When the USB interface is used to connect to the host computer, the parallel interface and the se rial interface (factory add-on option) cannot be connected sim ultaneously. 9 The USB interface does not guarantee all connections of USB- supported devices.
SETTING UP NOTE The LAN interface is a user add-on option. When installing a LAN card, remove the two screws securing the cover and remove the cover. Then insert the LAN card and reattach the cover with the two screws removed earlier. For details, refer to the Online Manual that comes with the LAN card.

PAPER HANDLING 4. Adjust the left margin. On the left hand side of the paper tabl e, a scale graduated in units of 1 [mm ]. When the paper guide is posit ioned at scale 0 [mm] , the left margin is 5 mm (0.2 inch). Push the lock lever down to secure the guide.
PAPER HANDLING 7. Press the LOAD button. The pa per will advance to the top-of- form position. The top-of-form position is the first line on which printing can start. To adjust t he position of the paper slight ly, press the S MICRO FEED button or the T MICRO FEED button.
PAPER HANDLING Loading Paper from the Cut Sheet Feeder (Option) A cut sheet feeder (SF940) allows autom atic printing on si ngle sheets without the need to m anually insert the sheet s one-by-one. This can save you a lot of tim e when printing long fil es using single sheets.
PAPER HANDLING • Slide the right paper guide un til the distance between the two guides is the approxim ate wi dth of your paper. 3. Manually fan the stack of pape r and place it in the paper bin. NOTE A short horizontal mark inside the left paper guide indicates the maximum capacity of the bin.
PAPER HANDLING • Load the paper m anually. Press the LOAD button. The paper will advance to the top- of-form position. Adjust the position of the paper as needed by the S M ICRO button or the T MICRO button (micro feed). • Load the paper using your soft ware.

PAPER HANDLING Loading Continuous Forms (Front Feed) This section explains how to use cont inuous forms as the tract or unit is installed at the front of the printer. The tractor unit pushes cont inuous forms. This condit ion applies when you fi rst purchase the printer.

PAPER HANDLING Loading Continuous Forms (Rear Feed) A tractor is supplied as stan dard and is attached to the front of the prin ter. It can be attached to the rear of th e printer. You can also buy a tractor unit as an addition al rear tractor unit. A maxim um of 8-ply media can be fed from the rear tractor unit .
PAPER HANDLING Tearing Off Continuous Forms Your printer has a special “tear-off edge” that allows you to tear off printed pages without wasti ng paper. The tear-off edge is located on the front and rear of the printer. To tear off continuous forms usi ng the tear-off edge: 1.

PRINTING This section describes the best m ethods for rem oving single sheets or continuous forms paper aft er printing. REMOVING PRINTED PAGES Removing Single Sheets When you print using software, th e printer automatically ejects each sheet of paper when the end of the printed page is reached.

6 CHAPTER 6 MA INTENA NCE MAINTENANCE Your printer requires very little care. Occasional cleaning and replacement of the ribbon cartridge are all that is required. Lubrication of the printer i s usually not necessary. If the print head carriage does not m ove smoothl y back and forth, clean the printer as described in this chapt er.
MAINTENANCE 4. Open the front cover of the printe r and remove the ribbon cartridge. Using a soft vacuum brush, gently vacuum the platen, print head carriage, and surrounding areas. You can easily slide the print head to th e left or right when the po wer is off.
