PRINCIPLE OF THE AUTOPILOT 1-2 Principle of Operation In the AUTO modes, the head in g information from a heading sens or is continuously comp ared with the course that is set on the autopilot ’s controller . (in the NA V mode, the course to the waypoint is r ece ived from a plotter connected to the NA Vpilot-51 1/520).

3. STEERING MODES 3-2 3.2 AUT O Mode 3.2.1 Using the AUTO mode The NA Vpilot-51 1/520’ s AUTO mode steers the boat automatic ally on a course set by the operator . Note: The AUTO mode will not compe nsate for the effe ct s of wind or tide, which can push you of f course in the athwart ship di rection.
3. STEERING MODE 3-3 3.2.2 ADV ANCED AUT O mode AUTO m ode will maintain a set co urse, b ut your vessel’s cours e may be shifted by the effec ts of current or wind. ADV ANCED AUTO mode maint ains a set course while compensating for the effect s of wind and tide.
3. STEERING MODES 3-4 3.3 NA V Mode 3.3.1 St arting the NA V mode If a destination waypoin t is set on a GPS / Plotter , the NA Vpilot-51 1/520 can receive this information and guide the bo at to the destin ation wayp oint as determined by the plotter .

STEERING MODE 3-5 3.3.2 Selecting sailing method of NA V mode When your vessel goes off course wh ile navigating between the orig in (previous waypoint) and your cur r ent destination waypo int because of a remote control command, etc. the NA V mode uses one of two meth ods t o get back on course: COURSE or XTE.
3. STEERING MODES 3-6 3.3.3 Switching waypoint When you arrive at a waypoint o n a route while in the NA V mode, you can switc h to the next waypoint automatically or manually . The AUTO setting will automatically switch to the nex t des tinat ion waypoint when your boat is within the arrival alarm area (s et on the plotter).
3. ST EERING MODE 3-7 3.3.4 Selecting the boat’s steering behavior af ter arriving at your destination w a y point The “Fishing m ode” can be enabled and set up control your boat ’s steering behavior after it reaches the last waypoint in a rout e.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-8 3.4 TURN Mode The [TURN/ MENU] key provides the various t urning m otions depending on the mode in use. There are f ive dif f erent turn type; 180º or 360º turns (f or AUTO mode only), O RBIT , SPIRAL and FIGURE EI GHT . All t urn type are available in clockwise and countercl ockwise direction.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-9 180º TURN (for A U TO mode on l y) This function changes t he current set course by 180º in the opposite d irection. After the 180º turn completely , t he message “TURN CO MPLETED” appears. Return to the AUTO mode by pressing the cour se control knob.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-10 ORBIT W hen ORBIT is enabled, your boat will orbit ar ound the boat ’s current position. If ORBIT is enabled while in t he NA V m ode, the boat orbits around the (last ) waypoint. This function requires a pl otter or GPS be connected.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-1 1 5. Rotate the course control knob t o select " ◄ ORBIT" or "ORB IT ► ", and then press it. The message “ST ART TO T URN BY FISHING M ODE” appears, and the b oat runs for the distance se t at step 3, and then s tarts making an orbit similar to the figure on the previous pa ge.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-12 SPIRAL The boat w ill spira l in the direction of current heading (ST BY), set course (AUTO) or the course to the next waypoint (NA V ) that was active at the mom ent that the SPI RAL mode is selected. The spiral speed can be set in the m enu.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-13 4. Press the course control knob, and t hen press [TURN/MENU] key once (twice for STBY m ode) to close the menu. 5. Press the [TURN/ MENU] key once to show the TURN menu. 6. Rotate the course control knob t o select “RADIUS OF ORBIT”, and then press it to circumscribe the value with a dou ble rectangle.

Then, you m ay choose how to progress towards that posit ion, from ORBIT (port direction, starboard direct ion) or FIGURE EIG HT .

ST EERING MODE 3-17 FU is one of auto stee ring modes, which outputs an absolute value determined with the course control knob to drive the rudder , thus changing the ship’ s course at a given rate o f change towards a set point.. 2. 3. ST EERING MODES 3-20 3.6 DODGE Mode The DODGE m ode is useful in situat ions where you need to quickl y take control of the helm to avoid an obstruct ion. 3.6.1 Dodging in STBY mode 1. Press the [PO RT] or [STBD] key down to steer appropriat ely until the b oat finishes t he turning.
3. STEERING MODE 3-21 3.6.2 Dodging in AUTO or NA V mode 1. Press the [PORT] or [ STBD] key down to change the course u ntil th e boat finishes to avoid the obstructio n. The equipment goes into the DODGE mode and the audible alarm sounds when one of the above keys is operated, to alert you to dodge operation.

4-1 4. MENU OPERA TION Most settings are carried out in the menus. The items shown in each menu depend on the mode in use. For the STBY mode the complete menu is shown. When the menu is accessed while in eithe r the AUTO or NA V mo des, only the menu items that are most frequently used in those mod es are shown.

If the rudder is driven very of ten to maintain th e se t course, the helm mechanism may wea r out. T o prevent this, the weather adjustment make s the NA V pilot-5 1 1/520 insensitive to minute course deviations.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-6 Set rudder gain so that the boat do es not ma ke frequent yaw . The fig ure sh own below provides general g uidelines for setting rudder gain.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-7 Adjusting the sensitivity in monitoring the boat’ s trim The NA Vpilot-51 1/520 continually monitors th e boat ’s trim in order t o kee p the trim sensitivity optimum. A lower setting is common because boat’ s trim usua lly does not change quickly .
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-8 When towing the net When a boat is in tow of the fishing gear , its st ern is “d ragged” by the net. This causes the boat to stray from its in tended course. T o keep the boat on course, you need to adjust the trim manually , which can be b other some.

5-1 5. ALARMS 5.1 ALARM SETUP Menu The NA Vpilot-51 1/520 has sev en c onditions which genera te both audio and visual alarms: watch ala rm, dev iation alarm. XTE (cross-track error) alarm, speed alarm, depth alarm, temp alarm and log trip alarm. Y ou may set up the alarms on the ALARM SETUP me nu.
5. ALARMS 5-2 5.1.1 Selecting the alarm buzzer Y ou may c h oose the buzzer from which to output the au dio alarm as follows. Use the external buzze r conn ected to the processor unit if the inter nal buzzer volume is small. Note: If “INTERNAL + EXTERNAL” is selected, the external buzzer s ounds when turning the NA Vpilot-5 1 1/520 off.

Rotate the course cont rol knob to select “WA TCH ALARM” f rom the ALARM SETUP menu. 2. Press the course control key to sho w the watch alarm options window .
5. ALARM S 5-4 5.1.5 Setting the cross-track error limit W hen in the NA V mode, the XTE alarm will sound when the course error has exceeded or f ails within the range set in t he following st eps: 1. Rotate the course cont rol knob to select “XTE” from the ALARM SETUP menu.
