The chart shown above may be used as a guide in determining the proper water temper ature for y our home. DANGER: Households with small children, disabled, or elderly persons may require a 120°F or lower gas control (thermostat) setting to prevent contact with “HOT” water .
LP and Natur al gas have an odor ant added to aid in detecting a gas leak. Some people may not physically be able to smell or r ecognize this odor ant.
6 Have the installer show y ou the location of the gas shut-off valv e and how to shut it off if necessary . T urn off the manual shut-off valv e if the water heater has been subjected to overheating, fir e, flood, physical damage or if the gas supply fails to shut off .
Installing the water heater . This water heater must be installed in accordance with these instructions, local codes, utility company requirements, and/or in the absence of local codes, use the latest edition of the American National Standard/National Fuel Gas Code.
8 Installing the water heater . Combustion and V entilation Air V entilation (ambient) air temperature must be 100°F or less. Proper operation of the water heater requires air for combustion and ventilation. Provisions for combustion and ventilation air must comply with referenced codes and standards.
9 Thermal Expansion Determine if a check valve exists in the inlet water line. Check with your local water utility . It may have been installed in the cold water line as a separ ate back flow prev enter , or it may be part of a pressur e reducing v alve, water meter or water softener .
10 Installing the water heater . A new combination temperature and pressure relief valve, complying with the Standard for Relief V alves and Automatic Gas Shut-Off Devices for Hot W ater Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22, is supplied and must remain in the opening provided and marked for the purpose on the water heater .
11 W ARNING: Do not attempt to convert this water heater for use with a different type of gas other than the type shown on the rating plate. Such conversion could result in hazardous operating conditions. Leak T esting The water heater and its gas connections must be leak tested at normal oper ating pressur es before it is placed in oper ation.
Installing the water heater . The water heater must be installed with the factory supplied blower assembly in place. V enting The water heater must be vented to the outdoors as described in these instructions . DO NOT connect this water heater to an existing vent or chimney - it must be vented separ ately from all other appliances .
13 Maximum and Minimum V ent Lengths NOTICE: The mixing of 2" and 3" vent pipe is not recommended. If 3" pipe is used, a 2" to 3" bell coupling is recommended at the rubber coupling. This water heater is supplied with a two-inch Schedule 40 PVC 45° vent terminal.
Installing the water heater . Additional Considerations D o Not install vent terminal under any patio or deck. T o help prev ent moisture from fr eezing on walls and under eaves , do not locate vent terminal on the side of a building with prev ailing winter winds .
15 NOTICE: All pipe, fittings, solvent cement, primers and procedures must conform to American National Standards Institute and American Society for T esting and Materials (ANSI/ASTM) standards.
16 Installing the water heater . All joints in the vent piping must be properly sealed and the following materials are r ecommended: PV C materials should use ASTM D-2564 gr ade cement. CPV C materials should use ASTM F-493 gr ade cement. ABS materials should use ASTM D-2235 gr ade cement.
17 Wiring If local codes permit, the water heater may be connected to electric service with the power cor d provided (DO NOT use an extension cor d). A grounding r eceptacle is requir ed.
18 Insulation Blankets Insulation blankets , available to the gener al public, for external use on gas water heaters are not necessary . The purpose of an insulation blanket is to r educe the standby heat loss encountered with stor age tank heaters.
F or increased ener gy efficiency , some water heaters have been supplied with two 24” sections of pipe insulation. Please install the insulation, accor ding to the illustr ations above, that best meets your r equirements . DO ❑ DO check inlet gas pressur e to ensure that it is within the r ange specified on the r ating plate.

24 Operating the water heater . W ater T emperature Setting… Maximum water temper atures occur just after the burner has shut off . T o determine the water temper ature, turn on a hot water faucet and place a thermometer in the water stream.
25 Care and cleaning of the water heater . Draining the W ater Heater CAUTION: Shut off gas to the water heater at the gas control (thermostat) gas cock or manual shut-off valve before draining water .
26 V enting System Inspection The water heater’ s internal flue must be inspected annually to be certain it is clean by removing the blow er assembly and flue baffle. When reinstalling the flue baffle make certain it is hung securely by its hanger at the top of the flue way .
27 V acation and Extended Shut-Down If the water heater is to remain idle for an extended period of time, the power and water to the appliance should be turned off to conserve ener gy and prev ent a build- up of dangerous hydrogen gas . The water heater and piping should be dr ained if they might be subjected to freezing temper atur es .
