6 • If you want to power the H5D from a PC laptop (as opposed to a Macintosh laptop), you must ensure that the FireWire port on the computer is capable of supplying power. Please note the following: Most recent Macintosh computers are compatible, both desktops and laptops.

20 C ARRYI NG ST R AP The carr y ing strap is att ached by firstly withdrawing the safet y collar . The hook is then free d and can be at tached to the strap lug. Slide back the safet y collar to ens ure the hook remains in the lock ed p osition bet ween the small protruding lugs.
21 CHAR G IN G TH E BA T T E RY With the batter y removed from the camera , inser t the jack plug from the bat ter y charger into t he so cket on the batter y grip. Insert the bat ter y charger into a standard ( 1 0 0 – 2 40V~ /5 0 – 60 Hz) dom estic socket.
22 B AT T E R Y L I F E Batter y life is dependent on a n umber of variable factors and therefore can - not be exac tly predic ted. I f the cam - era is lef t in the ac tive state instead of D ispla y O ff or Sl e ep modes for long periods, for example, then the ba t ter y will b ecom e ex hauste d much f aste r .
23 POW ER MODES The H5D can be set at three active modes − ON , D i s p l ay Off and Sleep . In these ac tive modes, bat ter y consumption is least in Sleep mo de and most in ON mode. Both the grip and the sensor unit displa ys are dimmed accordingly .
24 PC -CONNECT OR A PC connector for non T TL - flash s yn chronis atio n is lo cate d on the lef t side of the bod y . It is protected by a captive rubber plug.
25 I NS E RTI N G A CF C AR D 1 . Op en the CF ca rd slot c over on the s ensor unit by i nsert- ing a thum b in the reces s and then sliding i t to the left. 2. Behind the c over , you will see a slot for t he card ( A) and a releas e but ton (B ) below the slot .
26 FOR MA T TI NG C AR DS The camera is only ab le to read and write to storage media that ha ve been f ormatted correc tly . New cards some times hav e no format ting, or you might want to c onvert a card that is currently us ing a format that the camera cannot read.
27 SE N SO R UN IT – I NTR OD UC TI O N The captured image is temporarily stored internally on a CF card in the sensor unit or onto a c omputer hard disk when tethered using Phocus.

35 MAN UAL FOCUS There is both a Manua l focus mode set ting and a manual override capability. Manu al focus is a specific set ting that you actively make, whereas manual o ver - ride is always a vailable as a temporar y override of an autofocus setting.
36 SINGLE SHO T At Single Shot setting ( AF S ) , the shutter release will be b locked until the camera finds the optimum focus setting. This ensures that no captures can be made that are not finely focused. H owev er , this delay will normally be only a frac tion of a second in good lighting conditions with a clea r fo cusing pattern.
37 TR UE FOCUS AN D ABSO LUTE POS ITI ON LOC K The obvious situation that w ould most b enefit from using T rue F ocus would be a fashion shoot with a fairly wide angle lens at a large aper ture setting and where the central area of the image is cloth ing while retaining focus on the mo del's face.
