Turning wireless devices on or off You can use the wirel ess button or HP Connection Manager (sele ct models only) to turn on and turn off wireless devices. NOTE: A computer may have a wir eless bu tto n , a w ireless swit ch, or a wireless key on the keyboard.
Using a WLAN A wireless connection con nects the computer to Wi-Fi networks, or WLANs. A WLAN is composed of other computers and accessories that are linked by a wireless router or a wireless access point. Connecting to an existing WLAN Windows 7 1. Be sure that th e WLAN device is on.

Inserting a SIM NOTE: To identify the SIM slot location, refer to the Getting Started guide. 1. Shut down the comp uter. If you are not sure whet her the compute r is of f or in Hibernation , tu rn the computer on by pressing the power bu tton . Then sh ut down the computer through the operating system.
Using GPS (select models only) Your computer may be equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS satellites deliver location, speed, and direction information to GPS-equipped systems. For more information, refer to the HP GPS and Loc ation softwar e Help.
Connecting a modem cable 1. Plug the modem cable i nto the modem jack (1) on the compute r. 2. Plug the modem cable into the RJ-11 telephone wall jack (2) or a route (not illu stra te d ).
Connecting a country- or region- specific modem cable adapter Telephone jacks vary by country or region. To use the modem and the modem cable outside the country or region in which yo u p urc ha se d th e co mpu t er, you must obtain a coun try- or region-sp ec ific modem cable adap ter.
Adding new locations when traveling On a new computer, the only location settin g available to the modem is a location setting for the country or region in which yo u p urc ha se d th e co mpu t e r.

Adjusting the volume Depending on your c omput er model, you can adju st th e volume us ing the followin g: ● Volume buttons ● Volume hotkeys (speci fic keys pressed in combination with the fn key) ● Volume keys WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury, adjust the volume before putting on headphones, earbuds, or a headset.
To check the recording functions on your computer, follow these steps: 1. Select Start > All Programs > Acce ssories > Sound Re corde r . 2. Click Start Recording and speak into the micro phone. Save the file to your desktop. 3. Op en a multimedia program and play back the sound.

HDMI The HDMI port conne c ts the comput er to an optional video or audio device, such as a high -definition television, or to any comp atible digital or audi o component. NOTE: To transmit video and/or audio signa ls through the HDMI port, you need an HDMI cable (purchased separa tely).
Configuring audio for HDMI To configure HDMI audio , first connect an audio or video device, such as a high-definition TV, to the HDMI port on your computer. Then configure the default audio playback d evice as follows: 1. Right-click the Speakers icon in th e notification area, at the far right of the ta skbar, and then click Playback dev ices .
4 Power management NOTE: A computer may have a power button or a power switch. The term power button is used throughout this gu ide to refer to both typ es of power controls. Shutting down the computer CAUTION: Unsaved informatio n is los t when the comput e r shuts d o wn .
Setting power options Using power-saving states The computer has two power-saving states that are enabled at the factory: Slee p and Hibernation. When Sleep is initiate d, the power lights blink a nd th e scr ee n cle ar s. You r w ork is sa ve d to memo ry, letting you exit Sleep faster than exiting Hibernat ion.
Initiating and exiting Hibernation The system is set at the factory to initiate Hibe rnation after a period of inactivity when running on battery power or on external power, or when th e battery reaches a critical battery level. Power settings a nd timeouts can b e changed in Windows Control Panel.
Selecting a different power plan Use any of the following methods: ● Click the power meter icon in the notification ar ea, and the n select a power plan fro m the list. ● Windows 7 —Select Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Power Optio ns , and then select an item from the list.
Setting password protection on wakeup To set the computer to prompt for a password when the computer exits Sleep or Hibernation, follow these steps: Windows 7 1. Select Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options . 2. In the left p ane, click Requir e a password on wakeu p .
Using HP Power Assistant (select models only) HP Power Assistant allows you to configure system settings to op timize your computer's power consumption and battery ch arge.
Using Battery Chec k Help and Support provides information on th e st atus of the battery installed in the computer. To run Battery Check: 1. Connect the AC ada pter to the computer. NOTE: The computer must be conn ected to external power for Battery Check to work properly.
The computer takes the follo wing actions for a critical battery level: ● If Hibernation is ena bled and the computer is on or in the Sleep state, the computer initiates Hibernat ion.
Storing a battery CAUTION: To reduce the ri sk of d ama g e to a b attery, do not e xpose it to h i gh te mp e ratures for extended perio ds of time. If a computer will be unused and unplugged from external power for more than 2 weeks, remove the battery and store it se parately.
When you connec t the co mpu te r to e xte rn al AC p o we r, th e f ollowing even ts o ccur : ● The batter y be gin s to c ha rg e. ● If the computer is turned on, the power meter ic on in the notifica tion area changes appea rance.
Switchable graphics/dual gr aphics (select models only) Select computers are equipp ed with eith er switchable graphics o r dual graphics. ● Switchable graphics—Supporte d by both AMD and Intel. If your computer has AMD dynamic switchable graphics, it on ly supports switchable graphics.
NOTE: There may be some instances when you may not be allowed to switch modes. In other instances, you may be p ro mpt ed to switch mod es. Yo u may also be re qu ire d to close all ap p lic ations before switching. NOTE: F or more information, refer to the switchable graphics software Help.
5 External cards and devices Using Media Card Reader cards (select models only) Optional digita l cards provide secure data storag e a nd convenient data sharing. These cards are often used with digital med ia–equipped camera s and PDAs as well as with o t her computers.
Removing a digital card CAUTION: To reduce the risk of loss of data or an unresponsive syst em, use the following procedure to safely re move th e d igita l car d.
Inserting an ExpressCard CAUTION: To prevent damage to the computer and external media cards, do not insert a PC Card into an ExpressCard slot. CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the connectors: Use minimal force when inserti ng an ExpressCard. Do not move or transpor t the computer when an ExpressCard is in u se.
Removing an ExpressCard CAUTION: To reduce the risk of loss of data or an unresponsive syst em, use the following procedure to saf ely remove th e Exp re ssC ard.
Inserting a smart card 1. Hold the card label-side up, and gently slid e the card into the smart card reader until the card is seated. 2. Follow the on-screen instruction s for logging on to the computer using the sma rt card PIN. Removing a smart card ▲ Grasp the edge of t he smart card, an d then pull it ou t of t he smar t card reader.
Connecting a USB device CAUTION: To reduce the risk o f damage to a USB conn ector, use minimal force to connect the device. ▲ Connect the USB cab le for the device to the USB port. NOTE: The followi ng illustration may look sli ghtly different than your computer.
Connecting a 1394 device CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to a 1394 port connector, use minimal force to connect the device. ▲ To connect a 1394 device to the computer, connect the 1394 cabl e for the device to the 1394 port. You will hear a sound when the device has been de tected.
Connecting an eSATA device CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to an eSATA port connector, use mi nimal force to connect the device. ▲ To connect an eSAT A device to the computer, connect the eSATA cable for the d e vice to the eSATA port. You will hear a sound when the device has been de tected.
Using a serial device (select models only) Select computer models include a serial port that con nects optional devices such as a serial modem, mouse, or printer. Some serial devices ma y require additiona l support software, which is usually include d with the device.
USB drives include the following types: ● 1.44-megabyte diske t te drive ● Hard drive module ● External optical drive (CD, DVD, an d Blu-ray) ● MultiBay device Using the expansion port (select.
Using the docking connector (select models only) The docking conne ctor connects the computer to an op tional docking device. An optional docking device provides ad ditional ports and connect ors that can be used with the computer. NOTE: The following image may loo k slig h tly diff er ent than yo ur co mpu te r or docking device.
6 D r i v e s Handling drives CAUTION: Drives are fragile compu t er components that must be handled wi th care. Refer to the following cau tion s be fo re ha ndling driv es. Ad d it i on al ca utions are inc lu d ed with the procedures to which they apply.
Using hard drives Improving hard drive performance Using Disk Defragmenter As you use the compute r, f iles on the har d drive b ec ome f ra gment ed. Disk Defragme nt er consolidates the fragmented files and folders on the hard drive so that the system can run more efficiently.
Using HP 3D DriveGuard (select mode ls only) HP 3D DriveGuard protects th e hard drive by parking the drive and halting data requests under eithe r of the following conditions: ● You drop the compu ter. ● You move the compute r with the display closed while th e computer is running on battery power.
Using HP 3D DriveGuard software The HP 3D DriveGuard so ftware enables you to perform the following tasks: ● Enable and disa ble HP 3D DriveGuard. NOTE: Depending on you r u ser privileges, you may be unab le t o enable or disable H P 3D DriveGuard.
5. Gently press the disc (3) down onto the tray spindle until the disc snap s into place. 6. Close the disc tray. NOTE: After you insert a disc, a short pause is normal. If yo u h ave no t se lect ed a media player, an AutoPlay dialog box opens. It prompts you to select how you wan t to use the media content.
When the dis c tr ay opens no rmally 1. Press the rel ease button (1) on the d rive bezel to release the disc tray, and then gently pull o ut the tray (2) un til it stops. 2. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by ge ntly pressing dow n on the spindle while lifting the oute r edges of the disc.

Sharing optical drives Although your computer may not have an integrated optical drive, you can access software and data, and install applicatio ns, by sharing an optical driv e connected to anothe r co mpu ter in your ne two rk .
7 S e c u r i t y Protecting the computer Standard security features pr ovided by the Windows operating system and the non-Windows Computer Setup utility (BIOS) ca n protect your pe rsonal settings and data from a variety of risks. NOTE: Security solutions are designed to act as d e terrents.
Computer risk Security feature Unauthorized r emoval of the computer Security cabl e slot (used with an optional secu rity cable) *Computer Setup is a pre installed, ROM-based utility that c an be used even when the opera ting system is not working or will not load.
Setting passwords in Windows Password Function Administrator password* Protects access to a Windows administrator-level account. NOTE: This password cannot be used to access Computer Setup contents. User password* Protects access to a Windows user account.
Setting passwords in Computer Setup Password Function BIOS administrator password* Protects access to Computer Setup. DriveLock master password* Protects access to the internal hard drive that is pr otected by DriveLock. It is also used to remove DriveLock p rotection.
4. When prompted, type your cu rrent password. 5. When prompted, type your new password again to confirm. 6. To save your change s and exit Computer Setup, click the Save icon in the lower-le ft corner of the screen, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
To apply DriveL ock protection to an internal ha rd d rive, a user password and a master password must be set in Computer Setup. Note the following considerations about using DriveLock p rotection: .
Entering a DriveLock password Be sure that the hard drive i s inserted into the compute r (not into an optional docking device or external MultiB ay). At the DriveLock Password prompt, type your user or master pa ssw ord (u sing th e sa me kin d o f keys you used to set the password), and then press enter .
6. Type your master password, and then press enter . 7. To save your change s and exit Computer Setup, click the Save icon in the lower-le ft corner of the screen, and then follow the on-screen instructions. – or – U se the arrow keys to select File > Save Changes and Exit , and then press enter .
5. Use a pointi ng de vice or the arrow keys to select Disable protection . 6. To save your change s and exit Computer Setup, click the Save icon in the lower-le ft corner of the screen, and then follow the on-screen instructions. – or – Use the arrow keys to select File > Save Changes and Exit , an d then press enter .
Updates to the operating system and other software may have become ava ilable after the comput er left the factory. To be sure that all available updates are installed on the computer, observe these guidelines: ● Run Windows Update as so on as possible after you set up your computer.
Using the fingerprint reader (select models only) Integrated finge rprint readers are available on select computer mo dels. In orde r to use the f i ng erprint reader, you must set up a user account with a pa ssword on the computer. This account allows yo u to log on to your computer with a swipe of a designa ted finger.
8 Maintenance Cleaning your computer Cleaning products Use the following produ cts to safely clean and disinfect your computer : ● Dimethyl benzyl ammon ium chloride 0.3 pe rcent maximum concentration (For example: germicidal disposabl e wipes. These wipes come in a variety of brand names.
Cleaning the sides and co ver To clean and d isinfect the sides and cover, use a so ft microfiber clot h or chamois moistene d w ith one of the cleani ng solutions listed pre viously or use an acceptable germicidal disposab le wipe. NOTE: When cleaning th e cover of the computer, use a circular motion to aid in re moving dirt and debris.
Using SoftPaq Download Manager HP SoftPaq Download Ma nager (SDM) is a too l that provides quick access to SoftPaq information for HP business computers witho ut requiring the SoftPaq number. Using this tool, yo u can easily search for SoftPaqs, an d then do w nload and unpack th em.
9 Computer Setup (BIOS) and Advanced System Diagnostics Using Computer Setup Computer Setup, or Basic Input/Ou tput System (BIOS), controls communication b e tween all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives, display, keyboard, mouse, and p rinter).
To exit Computer Setup menu s, choose one of the following methods: ● To exit Computer Setup menus without saving your changes: Click the Exit icon in the lower-left corner of the screen, and then follow the on-scre e n instructions.
Updating the BIOS Updated versions of the BIOS may be available on the HP Web site. Most BIOS update s on the HP Web site are packaged in comp ressed files called SoftPaqs . Some download packa ges contain a file n amed Read me.txt, which contains information regarding installing and troubleshooting the file.
NOTE: If you connect your computer to a networ k, consult the network administrator before installing any software upd ates, especially system BIOS updates. BIOS installation procedures vary . Follow any instructions that are displayed on th e screen after the download is complete.
To start Advanced System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the compu t er. While the “Press the ESC key for Star tup Menu” message is displayed in the lo wer-left corner of the screen, press esc . When the Startup Men u is displayed, press f2 . 2.
10 MultiBoot About the boot device order As the computer starts, the system attempts to boot from enabled bo ot devices. The MultiBoot utility, which is enabled at the factory, controls the orde r in which the system se lects a boot device.
Enabling boot devices in Computer Setup The computer wil l boot to a USB device or a NIC device on ly if th e de vice ha s first b e en en ab led in Computer Setup. To start Computer Setu p and enable a USB device or a NIC device as a bo ot device, follow these steps: 1.
