Ensuring proper ventilation Proper ventilation for the system is important fo r workstation operatio n. Follow these guidelines: ● Operate the workstation on a sturdy, level surface. ● Provide at least 15.24 cm (6 inches) of cleara nce at the front and back of the workstation.
2 System management This section describes the tools and utilities that provide system ma nagement for the work station. Topics Power management and performance features on page 39 BIOS ROM on page 41.
Hyper-Threading Technology (HTT) This computer supports HT T, an Intel-propriet ar y technology that improves processor performa nce through parallelization of computations (doing multiple tasks at once). The operating system treats an HTT-en abled proc essor as two virtual proc esso rs, and sh ares the workload between them when pos sible.
Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) Non-Uniform Memory Acce ss (NUMA) is av ailable on some Z se ries Workstations. NUMA can improve memory bandwidth and la tency fo r multi-process or multi-thread ed applications or workloads.

Initial computer configuration and deployment The computer includes a preinstalled s ystem software image. After a b rief software unbundling process, the computer is ready to use.
Copying a setup configurat ion to another computer This section provides information abo ut replicating the computer setup. CAUTION: Setup configuration is model-specific. File sy stem corruption can result if source and target computers are not the same model.

HP SoftPaq Download Manager HP SoftPaq Download Manager is a free, easy-to-use interface for lo cating and downloading software updates for the HP client PC models in your environment. By specifyi ng your models, operating system, and language, you can q uickly locate, sort, and sele ct the softpaqs you need.
If the syste m ROM fails the valid ation check, the Fa ilSafe Boot Block provides enough support to start the computer from a BIOS ima ge CD creat ed from a SoftPa q.
Asset tracking Asset track ing features provid e asset tracking data that can be managed using HP S ystems Insight Manager (HP SIM), HP Console Management Controller (CMC), or other syste ms-management applications.
SATA hard d isk drive security HP computers include the HP DriveLock facility for SATA hard disk drives to prevent unauthorized access to data. WARNING! Enabling DriveLock can render a SATA hard disk drive p ermanently inaccessible if the master password is lost or forgotten.
DriveLock applications The most practical use of DriveLoc k is in a corporate environment. The system adm inistrator would be responsible for configuring the hard disk dri ve, wh ich involves setting the DriveLock master password and a temporary user p assword.
Enabling DriveLock To enable and set th e DriveLock user password: 1. Power on or rest art the computer . 2. As soon as the compu ter is powered on, repea tedly press t he F10 key until you enter Computer Setup (F10) Utility.
Password security The power-on passwo rd prevents unauthorized use of the co mputer by requiring entry of a password to access applications or data when the comp uter is powered on or r estarted.
Establishing a power-on password using computer setup Establishing a power-on password through Comput er Setup (F10) Utility pr events access to the computer when power is connec ted, unless you s p ecify the password. When a power-on password is set, Computer Setup (F10) Utili ty presents Password Options in the Security menu.
Entering a setup password If a setup password has been established on the comp uter, you will b e prompted to enter it each time you run Computer Setup (F10) Utility. To enter a setup password: 1. Restart the computer. 2. As soon as the compu ter is powered on, press a nd hold F10 until you enter Co mputer Setup (F10) Utility.
Deleting a power-on or setup password To delete a power-on or setup password: 1. Power on or rest art the computer . 2. Choose from the following: ● To delete the power-on password, go to step 4. ● To delete the setup pa ssword, as soo n as the computer is powered on, press and hold F10 until you enter Computer Se tup (F10) Utility.
Clearing passwords If you forget the password, you cannot access the c omputer. For instructions about clearing passwords, see Configuring password security and r esetting CMOS on page 159 .
Side access panel solenoid lock The side access panel solenoid lock (available only on specific workstations) sec ures the side access panel to the chassis. The solenoid is controlled by a loca l or remote s ignal. To lock the solenoid, set a password for the solenoid lock in Compu ter Setup (F10) Utility.
Programmable power button (Windows only) With ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) enabled, you can customize the behavior of the power button so that rather than powering do wn, the workstation enters sleep mode (low power state), or hibernate mod e (very low power state).
3 Component replacement information and guidelines This chapter provides warnings, cautions, informat ion, and guidelines for removal and replacement procedures. It does not document the step-b y-step procedure s. IMPORTANT: Removal and replacement procedures are now availabl e in videos on the HP website.
Warnings and cautions WARNING! These symbols on any surface or area of the equipment indicate the following: Presence of a hot s urface or hot component. If th is surface is contacted, the potential for injury exists. To reduce the risk of injury from a hot component, let the surfac e cool before touching.
Service considerations Tools and soft ware requirements The tools necessary for computer co mponent removal and installation are : ● Torx T-15 driver ● Flat blade and cross-tip screwdrivers ● Di.
Persona l groundi ng methods and equipment Use the following items to h elp prevent ESD damage: ● Wrist straps — These are flexible straps with a maximu m of one megohm ± 10% resistance in the ground cords. To provide a proper ground, wear the strap against bare skin.
Product recycling HP encourages customers to recycle used electronic hardware, HP or iginal print cartridges, and rechargeable batteries. For information about recycling HP components or pro ducts, see http://www.
Cable management Proper routing o f the internal cables is critical to the operation of the workstation. Follow good cable management prac tices when remo ving and installing c omponents. ● Handle cables with care to avoid damage. ● Apply only the tension required to seat or unseat cables during insertion or removal from the connector.
CPU (processor) and CPU heatsink CAUTION: Observe the following cautions when removing or replacing the heatsink. — When removing the heatsink, loo sen all screws a li ttle at a time to ensure the CPU remains level. Do not fully loosen one screw, and then move on to the next.
Expansion slots This section identifies and describes computer expa nsion card slots, and presents card configuration information.
