1 How Sonar W orks Sonar technology is based on sound waves. The 300 Series TM Fishing Syst em uses sonar to locate and define structure, bot tom c ontour and composition, as well as depth directly below the transducer .
2 The sound pulses are transmit ted at various frequencies depending on the application. V er y high frequencies (455 kHz) are used for great est definition but the operating depth is limited. High frequencies (200 kHz) are commonly used on consumer sonar and pro vide a good balance between depth performance and resolution.
3 DualBeam PLUS TM Sonar Y our 300 Series TM Fishing System uses a 200/83 kHz DualBeam PLUS TM sonar system with a wide (60 °) area of coverage. DualBeam PLUS TM sonar has a narrowly focused 20 ° center beam, surrounded by a second beam of 60 °, expanding your co verage to an area equal to your depth.
GPS uses a constellation of 24 sat ellites that continually send radio signals to the earth. Y our present position is determined by receiving signals from up t o 16 satellites and measuring the distance from the satellites. All satellites broadcast a uniquely c oded signal once per second at exactly the same time.
5 What’ s On the Display The 300 Series TM can display a variety of useful information about the area under and Timer - elapsed time with T emp/Speed Accessory or GPS Receiver . Depth - water depth; can be set to alarm when the water becomes t oo shallow .

8 Sonar View Sonar View presents a historical log of sonar r eturns. Depth is always displayed. Readouts for temperature and speed ar e automatically displayed if the appropriate accessory is connected.
9 Understanding Sonar History It is important to understand the significance of the 300 Series TM Fishing System display . The display does NO T show a literal 3- dimensional representation of what is under the water .
10 Freeze Fr ame Freeze Frame - Pressing any arr ow on the 4-W A Y Cursor Contr ol key will freeze the scr een and a cursor will be displayed on the screen. The cursor can be positioned on the display using the 4-W A Y Cursor Con trol key t o determine the depth of any sonar return.
11 Inverse is a method wher e weak returns are shown with dark pixels and strong r eturns with lighter pixels. This has the benefit of ensuring that weak signals will be clearly visible on the display . Structure ID® represents weak returns as light pixels and strong returns as dark pix els.
12 Sonar Zoom View Sonar Zoom View increases the displayed r esolution to separate sonar returns that are very close together , such as those caused by fish suspended close to the bot tom or within structure. In Zoom View , the display is split to show a narrow slice of the full range view on the right and the zoomed view on the lef t.
13 200/83 kHz Split Sonar View Split Sonar View displays sonar returns from the 83 kHz wide beam on the left side of the screen and displays sonar returns from the 200 kHz narr ow beam on the right side of the screen. Depth is always displayed in the upper left hand corner .
14 Big Digits View Big Digits View provides digital data in a lar ge, easy-to-see format. Depth is always displayed. Readouts for temperature, speed and T riplog information are displayed automatically if the appropriat e accessory is connected to the 300 Series TM Fishing System.
15 Bird’ s Eye View Bird's Eye View - This view shows a 3-D , perspective view of the track and the chart’ s land cont our from a point above and behind the boat (the eye point).
16 Chart View Chart View - This view shows car tography from the built -in Uni-Map TM for the area surrounding your current position. The curr ent track ( also known as the position history or breadcrumb trail) showing where the boat has been, along with saved trac ks, waypoints, and the curr ent route (when navigating), are o verlaid on the chart.
17 Combo View Combo View - This view is displayed as a split screen, with Chart View on the left and Sonar View on the right side of the screen. The width of the sonar window can be changed. View Orientation Both Chart and Combo views allow you to c hoose the orientation of the view .
18 Viewing Cartography In the Chart or Combo Views there are several cartography-relat ed functions that you can access using various keys. Panning: Use the 4 -W A Y Cursor keys to move the chart around on the display in the direction of the key being pressed.
19 W aypoints, R outes and T racks W aypoints are stored positions that allow you t o mark areas of interest or navigation points. Y our 300 Series TM Fishing System can st ore up to 2000 waypoints. Routes link two or more waypoints together t o create a path for navigation, and are used in trip planning.
20 Sav e, Edit, or Delete a W aypoint Save your current position as a w aypoint: On any view , press the MARK key to save the current position of the boat as a waypoint. Save the cursor position as a wa ypoint: On the Chart or Combo view , use the Cursor key to designate the position you want t o save as a waypoint.
21 T o make it easier to select a waypoint, select Sort By and press the RIGHT or LEFT Cursor keys t o select a sor t order: • Name shows the waypoints alphabetically • Time shows the most recently- created waypoint first • Distance shows the closest waypoint first.
22 Add a W aypoint T arget or T rolling Grid Add or Remov e a Wa ypoint T arget: From the W aypoints submenu, select T arget and press the RIGHT Cursor key t o display a list of waypoints.
Sav e, Edit or Delete a Route Save the current rout e: While you are navigating , the current route can be saved. Fr om the Navigation X -Press TM menu, select Save Current Route and pr ess the RIGHT Cursor key .
24 Sav e or Clear a Current T r ack Save the current trac k: From the Navigation X -Press TM menu, selec t Save Current T rack and press the RIGHT Cursor key . The track will remain on the display , but will change from black t o gray . T o remove the track completely fr om the display , see Edit, Delete or Hide Saved T racks.
25 K ey Functions Y our 300 Series TM Fishing System user int erface consists of a set of easy-to-use ke ys that work with various on-screen views and menus to give you flexibility and con trol over your fishing experience.
26 MENU K ey The MENU key is used to access the menu s ystem. Start-Up Options Menu - Press the MENU key during the power up sequence t o view the Start -Up Options menu.
27 MARK K ey Press the MARK key while in any view t o mark the position of a waypoint, either at the current boat location, or , if the Cursor is active, at the current Cursor location. GOT O K ey If the Cursor is active, pressing the GO T O key while in any view creates a waypoint and starts navigation towards that waypoint.
28 Powering Up the Unit T urn on your 300 Series TM Fishing System by pressing the POWER/LIGHT k ey . The Title screen is displayed until the 300 Series TM Fishing Syst em begins operation. Y our 300 Series TM Fishing System will begin Normal or Simulator operation, depending on the presence or absence of a transducer .
Press the MENU key twice for the Main Menu, then use the 4-W A Y Cursor LEFT or RIGHT key t o select a tab, and use the DOWN or UP key t o select a specific menu item under that tab, then use the LEFT or RIGHT keys again t o change a menu set ting. Press the EXIT key t o move quickly t o the top of the tab .
30 T otal Screen Update - when you change any menu set tings that affect the Sonar View , the view will update immediately (i.e. you don’t have t o exit the menu to apply the change to the scr een).
Simulator Use the Simulator to learn how t o use your 300 Series TM Fishing System bef ore taking your boat on the water . The Simulator is a very powerful tool that simulates on the water operation, pro viding a randomly-updated display .
32 Self T est Self T est displays results from the in ternal diagnostic self test, including unit serial number , Printed Circuit Board (PCB) serial number , software revision, total hours of operation and the input voltage. Accessory T est Accessory T est lists the accessories connected to the system.
GPS Diagnostic View GPS Diagnostic View shows a sky chart and numerical data from the GPS receiver . The sky chart shows the location of each visible GPS satellite with its sat ellite number and a signal strength bar . A dark grey bar indicates that the satellite is being used t o determine your current position.
34 Sonar X -Press TM Menu (Sonar views only) The Sonar X-Press TM menu provides access to the set tings most frequently-used. Press the MENU ke y once while in any of the Sonar Views to access the Sonar X -Press TM menu. NOTE: Menu c hoices will vary depending on system set tings such as whether the unit is set for Advanced User mode.
35 Sensitivity Sensitivity contr ols how much detail is shown on the display and will adjust the sensitivity of all sonar frequencies. Increasing the sensitivity shows more sonar returns from small baitfish and suspended debris in the wat er; however , the display may become too clutt ered.
36 Upper Range (Advanced: Sonar , Split Sonar, Big Digits and Circular Flasher views only) Upper Range sets the shallowest depth range that will be displayed on the Sonar , Split Sonar , Big Digits and Circular Flasher Views.
37 Lower Range Lower Range sets the deepest depth range that will be displayed. Automatic is the default set ting . When in automatic mode, the lower range will be adjusted by the unit to f ollow the bott om. Selecting a specific setting loc ks the depth range into Manual mode.
38 Chart Speed Chart Speed determines the speed at which the sonar information moves across the display , and consequen tly the amount of detail shown. A faster speed shows more information in the Sonar Views and is pr eferred by most anglers; however , the sonar information moves across the display quickly .
Bott om Range (Sonar Zoom view only when Bot tom Lock is On) Bott om Range allows you to contr ol how much of the water c olumn, measured up from the bot tom, is shown in the Sonar Z oom View . Choose a small value to see low- lying bot tom structure or details of the bot tom return.
40 Cancel Navig ation (only when Navigating) Cancel Navigation discards the curren t route and exits Navigation Mode. This menu choice will only appear when you are curren tly navigating a route. This will not delete a previously-saved route. T o C anc el Na vig a tion: 1.
41 Navig ation X-Pres s TM Menu (Navigation views only) The Navigation X-Press TM menu pr ovides access to the set tings most frequently used. Press the MENU key once while in the Bird's Eye View , the Char t or the Combo View to access the Navigation X -Press TM menu.
42 W aypoint [Name] (Only with an active cursor on a waypoint) W aypoint [Name] allows you to view the W aypoints submenu for the waypoin t under your cursor .
43 Cursor to W aypoint (Chart or Combo view only) Cursor to W aypoint allows you to quic kly move the cursor to any saved waypoint, so that you can locate it or edit it. NOTE This X-Press TM menu item appears only if you have saved waypoints. T o mo v e cursor t o a sa v ed w a ypoint: 1.
44 Sav e Current Route (only when Navigating) Save Current Rout e allows you to save the current r oute being displayed. This menu choice will only appear when you are curren tly navigating a route. T o Sa v e C urr en t R oute: 1. Highlight Save Current Route on the Navigation X -Press TM menu.
45 Cancel Navig ation (only when Navigating) Cancel Navigation discards the curren t route and exits Navigation Mode. This menu choice will only appear when you are curren tly navigating a route. This will not delete a previously-saved route. T o C anc el Na vig a tion: 1.
46 Remo ve Grid (only if a Grid is Active) Remov e Grid removes the waypoint grid from the display . This menu choice will only appear when a grid has already been applied to a waypoint. NOTE : See Add a W aypoint T arget or T rolling Grid for more information.
47 W aypoint [Name] (Most recently- created waypoint) W aypoint [Name] allows you to view the waypoints submenu f or the most recently created waypoint. NOTE : Y ou must have pressed the MARK key at least once since you last powered up the fishfinder for this menu choice t o appear .
48 Sonar Menu T ab Press the MENU key twice to access the Main Menu System and then pr ess the RIGHT Cursor key to select the Sonar tab. NOTE: Menu c hoices will vary depending on system set tings such as whether the unit is set for Advanced User mode or what transducer is currently selected.
49 Beam Select Beam Select sets which sonar returns from the transducer will be displayed on the screen. When set to 200/83 kHz , the returns fr om both beams are blended by starting with the 83 kHz wide beam return, dimming it, and then overlaying it with the 200 kHz narr ow beam return.
50 Fish ID+ TM Fish ID+ TM uses advanced signal processing to int erpret sonar returns, and will display a Fish S ymbol when very selective requirements are met. When a fish is detected, a fish icon and its depth are displayed abo ve the return that has been classified as being a fish.
51 Fish ID Sensitivity Fish ID Sensitivity adjusts the threshold of the Fish ID+ TM det ection algorithms. Selecting a higher setting allows weaker returns t o be displayed as fish. This is useful for identifying smaller fish species or baitfish. Selecting a lower set ting displays fewer fish from weak sonar returns.
52 Zoom Width Zoom Width adjusts the width of the Z oom window on the Sonar Zoom View . T o c hang e the Z oom Width Set ting: 1. Highlight Z oom Width on the Sonar main menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Con trol keys t o change the Z oom Width set ting.
53 Depth Lines (Advanced) Depth Lines divide the display into four equal sections that are separat ed by three horizontal depth lines. The depth of eac h line is displayed along the depth scale. Y ou can either turn Depth Lines On or Off . The Depth Lines menu choice is available when User Mode is set to Advanced (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode ).
54 Surface Clutter (Advanced) Surface Clutter adjusts the filter that r emoves surface clutter noise caused by algae and aeration. The lower the set ting , the less surface clutter will be displayed. The Surface Clut ter menu choice is available when User Mode is set t o Advanced (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode ).
55 Noise Filter (Advanced) Noise Filter adjusts the sonar Noise Filter to limit in terference on the display from sources such as your boat engine, turbulence, or other sonar devices. The Noise Filter menu choice is available when User Mode is set t o Advanced (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode ).
56 W ater T ype (Advanced) W ater T ype configures your unit for operation in fresh or salt water . The W ater T ype menu choice is available when User Mode is set t o Advanced (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode ).
57 Navig ation Menu T ab Press the MENU key twice to access the Main Menu System, then press the RIGHT cursor k ey to select the Navigation tab. NOTE: Menu c hoices will vary depending on system set tings.

63 T rackpoint Interv al T rackpoint Int erval allows you to select the time period between trackpoints. The curr ent track can only c ontain up to 20 ,000 trackpoints , so longer time periods cause the track t o extend bac k further in time, but will be less detailed.
64 Map Datum (Advanced) Map Datum allows you to change the map c oordinate system used by the 300 Series TM Fishing System t o match those of a paper map. The Map Datum menu choice is only available when User Mode is set to Advanced (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode ).
65 Course Projection Line Course Projection Line allows you to display or hide an arrow ext ending from the bow of the boat that projects your current c ourse, and shows where the boat will go if you continue on your pr esent course. T o c hang e the Course Pr ojec t Line set ting: 1.
66 Chart Menu T ab Press the MENU key twice to access the Main Menu System and then pr ess the RIGHT Cursor key to select the Chart tab. NOTE: Menu choices will vary depending on system set tings such as whether the unit is set for Advanced User mode.
67 Chart Detail Level Chart Detail Level allows you to select how much chart detail you want displayed on the Navigation Views. Basic shows land areas , ports, obstructions and restricted areas. Navigation shows navaids , landmarks, f erryways and navigation routes in addition t o the Basic information.
68 T o c hang e the Map Borders setting: 1. Highlight Map Borders on the Chart main menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Con trol keys t o change the Map Borders set ting. (Hidden, MMC/SD Only , All Visible, Default = Hidden) Lat/Lon Grid Lat/Lon Grid allows you to display or hide a grid showing latitude and longitude lines.
69 Set Map Offset (Advanced) Set Map Offset allows you to change the map of fset used by the 300 Series TM . The Set Map Offset menu choice is only available when User Mode is set t o Advanced (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode ). NOTE: The Map Offset will be applied t o all maps and not just the map that requires the correction.
70 Alarms Menu T ab From any view , press the MENU key twice to access the Main Menu System. The Alarms tab will be the default selection. NOTE: When an alarm is triggered, you can silence it by pressing any key . The alarm will be silenced, and will not be triggered again until a new instance of the alarm condition is detected.
71 Depth Alarm Depth Alarm sounds when the depth becomes equal to or less than the menu set ting. T o c hang e the Depth Alarm setting: 1. Highlight Depth Alarm on the Alarms main menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Con trol keys t o change the Depth Alarm set ting.
72 Low Battery Alarm Low Bat tery Alarm sounds when the input batt ery voltage is equal to or less than the menu set ting . The battery alarm will only sound for the bat tery that is connected to the 300 Series TM Fishing S ystem.
73 Off Course Alarm Off Course Alarm sounds when the boat has moved too far of f course based on the menu set ting when navigating. O ff Course Alarm allows you to set how far the boat is allowed to mo ve off course bef ore the Off Course Alarm will sound.
74 Drift Alarm Drift Alarm sounds when the boat has ex ceeded the distance from the boat’ s anchored position, based on the menu set ting. Drift Alarm allows you to set the size of a perimeter ar ound the boat’ s anchor ed position; if the anchored boat drif ts outside of that perimeter , the Drift Alarm will sound.
75 Setup Menu T ab From any view , press the MENU key twice to access the tabbed Main Menu System, then press the RIGHT cursor key until the Setup tab is selected. NOTE: Menu choices will vary depending on system set tings such as whether the unit is set for Advanced User mode and what accessories are at tached to the unit.
76 Units - Depth Units - Depth selects the units of measure for all depth- related readouts. T o c hang e the Units - Depth setting: 1. Highlight Units - Depth on the Setup menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Con trol keys t o change the Units - Depth set ting.
77 Units - Speed Units - Speed selects the units of measure for speed-relat ed readouts, and will appear in the menu if a T emp/Speed Accessory is connected and the paddlewheel has moved at least once, or if the GPS Receiver is connected. T o c hang e the Units - Speed setting: 1.
78 T riplog Reset T riplog Reset resets the T riplog to zer o, and will appear in the menu if a T emp/Speed Accessory is connected and the paddlewheel has moved at least once, or if the GPS Receiver is connected. The T riplog provides the following inf ormation: timer for elapsed time, distance traveled since last reset, and average speed.
79 Select Readouts (Advanced, Sonar view only) Select Readouts sets individual digital readouts on the Sonar View . This Advanced feature allows you to select what data will be displayed in each of 5 .
80 T o Select Readouts: 1. Make sur e you are in Advanced User Mode, then highlight Select Readouts on the Setup main menu. 2. Use the RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Con trol key t o initiate this procedure. 3. The Select Readouts submenu will appear , showing a list of all Readouts.

82 Daylight Sa ving Time (Advanced) Daylight Saving Time adjusts the time display t o account for local Daylight Saving Time when Time+Date is selected as a Digital Readout on the Sonar View (see Select Readouts ). Selecting On adds one hour to the time display adjusted f or your local time zone.
83 Time Format (Advanced, International only) Time Format changes the time format used by the unit This menu c hoice is available only when in Advanced User Mode (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode ).
84 NMEA Output (Advanced) NMEA Output turns the NMEA* output on or off . This menu choice is available only when in Advanced User Mode (see Setup Menu T ab: User Mode .) NMEA Output should be turned On if you connect the NMEA Output wires of the GPS Receiver cable t o another NMEA - compatible device, such as an aut opilot.
85 Sonar Sonar deactivates Sonar and removes the Sonar Views from the view rotation. (Off , On, Default = On) T o turn Sonar on or off: 1. Highlight Sonar on the Setup menu. 2. Use the LEFT or RIGHT 4-W A Y Cursor Contr ol keys to c hange the Sonar to On or Off (Off , On, Default = On).
86 Views Menu T ab From any view , press the MENU key twice to access the tabbed Main Menu System, then press the RIGHT 4 -WA Y Cursor Contr ol key until the Views tab is selected. This menu tab allows you to set the available views t o either hidden or visible in the view rotation.
