ENGLISH 5 RADIO OPERA TIONS Listening to the radio 1 Select the band (FM1, FM2, FM3 or AM). Y ou can select any one of FM1, FM2, and FM3 to listen to an FM station. KD-SX838 BAND TUNER KD-S737 T o search stations of higher frequencies. T o search stations of lower frequencies.
6 Storing stations in memory Y ou can use one of the f ollo wing two methods to store broadcasting stations in memor y . • Automatic preset of FM stations: SSM (Strong-station Sequential Memory) • Manual preset of both FM and AM stations FM station automatic preset: SSM Y ou can preset 6 local FM stations in each FM band (FM1, FM2, and FM3).
ENGLISH 7 Manual preset Y ou can preset up to 6 stations in each band (FM1, FM2, FM3 and AM) man ually . EXAMPLE: Storing an FM station of 88.3 MHz into the preset number 1 of the FM1 band 1 Select the FM1 band. 2 T une into a station of 88.3 MHz. See page 5 to tune into a station.

ENGLISH 9 Other convenient tuner functions Scanning broadcast stations When you press SCAN/INT (Scan/Intro) while listening to the radio , station scanning starts. Each time a broadcast is tuned in, scanning stops f or about 5 seconds (tuned frequency number flashes on the display), and y ou can check what program is now being broadcast.
10 CD OPERA TIONS Playing a CD 1 Insert a disc into the loading slot. The unit turns on, draws a CD and starts playback automatically . • When a CD is inserted upside down, “EJECT” appears on the display and the CD automatically ejects. T o stop play and eject the CD Press 0 .
ENGLISH 11 Locating a track or a particular portion on a CD T o fast forward or reverse the track Press and hold SSM ¢ , while playing a CD, to fast forward the track.
12 Selecting CD playback modes T o play back tracks at random (Random Play) Y ou can play back all tr acks on the CD at random. Each time y ou press MO/RND (Mono/Random) while playing a CD , Random Pla y mode turns on and off alter natively .
ENGLISH 13 Other convenient CD functions Prohibiting CD ejection Y ou can prohibit CD ejection and “loc k” a CD in the loading slot. Press and hold CD and 0 f or more than 2 seconds . “EJECT” flashes on the display f or about 5 seconds, and the CD is “loc ked.
14 SOUND ADJUSTMENTS T urning on/off the loudness function The human ear is less sensitive to low and high frequencies at low volumes. The loudness function can boost these frequencies to produce a w ell-balanced sound at low v olume lev els. Each time you press LOUD , the loudness function tur ns on and off alter nativ ely .

18 During tuner operation: T o check the cur rent clock time (changing the display mode) Press DISP repeatedly . Each time y ou press the b utton, the displa y mode changes as f ollows. • If the unit is not in use when you press DISP , the po wer tur ns on, the clock time is sho wn for 5 seconds, then the power turns off .

20 CD CHANGER OPERA TIONS This section is ONL Y FOR KD-SX838, when used with a JVC CD automatic changer (separately purchased). W e recommend that you use one of the CH-X series with your KD-SX838. If you hav e another CD automatic changer, consult y our JVC car audio dealer for connections .
ENGLISH 21 T o fast forward or reverse the track Press and hold SSM ¢ , while playing a CD, to fast forward the track. Press and hold SSM 4 , while playing a CD, to reverse the track. T o go to the next track or the previous track Press SSM ¢ briefly, while pla ying a CD , to go ahead to the beginning of the next tr ack.
22 Selecting CD playback modes T o play back tracks at random (Random Play) Each time you press MO/RND (Mono/Random) while pla ying a CD , Random Pla y mode changes as follo ws: Mode RND indicator Plays at random RND1 Lights All tracks of the current disc, then the tracks of the next disc, and so on.
ENGLISH 23 MAINTENANCE Handling CDs This unit has been designed only to play back CDs bearing the mark. Other discs cannot be played back. How to handle CDs When removing a CD from its case, press down the center holder of the case and lift the CD out, holding it by the edges.
24 TROUBLESHOOTING What appears to be trouble is not always serious. Check the following points before calling a service center. Symptoms • CD cannot be played back. • CD sound is sometimes interrupted. • Sound cannot be heard from the speakers.
