2 P r eparing to T a ke Picture s Befor e you start taking pictures with your camera, you first need to install the batteries or connect a Kodak-specified AC adapter for power , and insert a KODAK Pictur e Card ( camera memory car d) into the camera.
3 1 Checking B atteries So you are never caught with dead batteries, your camera indicates the power level of the batteries in the fo rm of a battery status symbol, which appear in the S tatus Display when you turn on the camera. For information on guidelines for battery usage, see page 66.
4 Inser ting a Camer a Memor y Car d Y our camera comes with a KODAK Pictur e Card (camera memory c ard), that is used to stor e pictures taken wi th the camera. The camera memory card, a lso referr ed to as a CompactFlash car d, is removable and reusable for easy storage and transfe r of your pictures.
5 1 Setting the Cloc k on Y our Camera Y our camera has a built-in clock that maint ains the date and time in a 24-hour format. The cam era clock needs to be set if you plan to use the Date Stamp feature, which imprints the date on your picture. For information on using the Date Stamp feature, see page 22.
6 Adjusting the LCD Bright ness You can adjus t the brightness level o f the colo r LCD to suit your particular needs. 1 W ith the camera on, set the Slider switch to Prefer ences. The P ref er ences scre en ap pears. 2 Pres s a bu tton until the icon is highligh ted.
7 2 2 T aking Pictur es Y our DC215 camera makes taking pi ctures fun. Just set the camera to Capture an d you are on your w ay to creating gr eat pictures. Everything you need is right at your fingertips. W ith the DC215 camera yo u can: q Preview the pic ture before it is taken.
8 P r eviewing a P ictur e Be for e it is T aken If you want to see what a pictur e looks like before you ta ke it, you can preview the image on the LCD on the back of your camera. The live image that ap pears i s helpf ul f or framin g your subject, especi al ly when using the Close-Up and T e m plate features.
9 2 Capturing a Pictur e T aking p ictures is a sn ap wit h your DC2 15 camera. Y ou can t ake a picture as close as 1.6 ft ( 0.5 m) in wide an gle or 3.
10 Photogr aphing Close-Ups If you want to take pictur es of objects up close, such as flo wers or artwork, use the Close-Up featur e. When selected, the camera automatica lly sets the focus distan ce to 8 in. (0.2 m) and sets the fla sh to ensure detail an d clarity .
11 2 P utting Y ours elf in the Picture There might be times when you want everyone, including yourself, to be in the picture. For these occasions, use the Self-T imer feature to create a 10-second delay between th e time yo u press the Shutter button and the time the picture is taken.
12 Viewing and Deleting the Pictur e Just T aken Y ou can view a pi cture seconds after it is taken with a touch o f a butto n. This is a convenien t way to check if the pict ure you just too k was positioned corr ectly , and decide if you want to keep it or delete it to save space on the camera memory car d.
13 2 Setting the Flash When taking pictures at nigh t, indo ors, or outdoors in hea vy shadows, your pictures need flash. Y our camera has five different flash options with a range of 10 ft (3.0 m) to accom modate most picture-taking situatio ns. 1 W it h the camera on, set the S lider switch to Capture.
14 Adjusting the Camer a Exposure If your pictures seem too dark or too light, you can adju st the amoun t of light allowed into the camera so your pictures ar e properly exposed. These adjustments in lighting are called Exposur e Compensation. 1 W ith the camera on, set the Slider switch to Cap tur e.
15 2 Locking in an Expos ur e Setting If you ar e taking a series of pictures that r equire a con sistent look or a constant exposur e setting, use the Exposure Lock f eature. This featur e is great fo r taking a series of pictur es, like a mountain range, and cr eating a mural with the prints .
16 D eleting the Pictur e Just T aken If you decide that you do not like a picture, you can delete it from the camera memory car d immediately after it is taken. For the Quick Delete feature to w ork, the picture must be displayed on th e LCD, so Quickview needs to be activated.
3 17 3 Customizing Y our Pictur es Chapters 1 and 2 explain ed the basics for taking great digital pictur es. In this chapter , you will learn a b ou t some of the custom fea tures available on your camera.
18 Unders tanding Qu ality an d Resolu tion Keep in mind that with your camera you are generally going to get beautiful digital pictures. But based on two factors, r esolution and quality , some pictures will be of a higher qualit y than others . Instead of film, th e camera places your pictur es on a camera memory card.
19 3 Adjusting the Pictur e Quality If you intend to make la rge prints, you can capt ure more detail in the picture using the Best setting, but less ro om is available on the camera memory car d. For everyday pictures, use the B etter setting, which gives you more pictur es and more storage space.
20 Adjusting the Picture Resol ution If you want to send pictur es through e-mail or use them o nline, use the Standard resolution settin g. W ith this sett ing, only the informatio n needed for viewing on a computer or printing small prints is captured.
21 3 Adding a T e mplate to Y our Pic tur e Y ou can enhance and per sonalize your pictures by adding a custom template supplied on your camera memory card. Once the pictur e is taken with the T emplate feature, the template cannot be removed. Y ou also ha ve the a bility to create and add your own tem plates to a camera memory card.
22 Adding the D ate to Y our Pictur es Y our camera can the r ecord the date and time directly on your pictur e using the Date Stamp feature. In order fo r the featur e to imprint the correct da te and time, you need to set the camera clock. See page 5 fo r details.
23 3 Selecting an Image File T y pe The digital pictures you take w ith your camera ar e stored in an image file format that you select from the ca mera.
24 Setting a Quic kview for Each Pictur e Y ou can set your camera so the pictur es automatically appear in the LCD each time you take a picture. W ith Quickview activated, you have the choice to keep pictures you want, or delete the ones you do not want in order to save space on the c amera memory card.
25 3 F ormatting Y our Camer a Memor y Car d If you own camera memory car ds that have been used in othe r digital cameras, the car ds may not be properly format ted for use in your DC215 camera, or the data on the cards may have beco me corrupted. When these issues arise, your camera indicates that the camera memory card n eeds to be formatted.
26 Adjusting the Video Out Signal Y ou can set your camera to be compatible with NTSC or P AL video signals. The V ideo Out feature needs to be set correctly if you plan on running a slide show of the pictur es from the ca mera on a television or video monitor .
27 3 Selecting a Language for the Camer a Y ou can select fro m m a ny differ ent language interfaces for your camera. Once you select a language, the text chan ges on the camera to reflect th at languag e. 1 W it h the camera on, set the S lider switch to Prefer ences.

29 4 4 Reviewing Y our Pictur es Now that you ha ve ta ken pictures with your camera, i t is time to take a look at them by setting the camera to Camera Rev iew . W ith the DC215 camera, you can: q V i ew y ou r p ic tures . q Magnify the picture to check the detail.
30 Viewing Y our Pictures There a re two ways to review the pictures in your camera. Use the Overlay feature, which displays a film strip of up to three thumbnail- size pictures at a time, or turn off Overlay and view each picture individually in full LCD size.
31 4 Magnifying Y our P ictur es If you want to zoom in on a specific part of a pictur e displayed on the LCD, use the Magnify fe ature. This feature lets you vi ew a section of the current pictur e at two times the normal LCD size. 1 W it h the camera on, set the S lider switch to Review .
32 Selecting Pictur es for P rin ting W ith the Print Order featur e, you can scr oll through and select certain pictures on the camera memory card fo r printing to a KODAK Picture Maker System. Certain printers that accept camera memory cards can also use the Print Order feature.
33 4 Cancelling Pictur es for P rinting Y ou can go back and cancel individual pictur es or the en tire print or der . 6 Press the DO-IT button. The Co pi es sc reen app ears unless you selected the Index Print option, which returns you to the Revie w screen.
34 D eleting One or All of Y ou r Pictur es If you decide tha t you do not want the pictures on the camera m emory card, o r you just want to free up space, use the Delete featur e to remove one or al l of th e pi ct u res on t he ca rd. 1 W ith the camera on, set the Slider switch to Review .
35 4 Running a Slide Show on Y our T e levision Y ou can show your pictur es to a large audience by co nnecting your camera to a television and r unning a slide show of the pictures stored o n the camera memory car d. T o conserve batteries, use a Kodak-specified AC adapter .

37 5 5 Installing Y our So f tw a r e The KODAK DC215 Installer Sof tware (Installer) included with your camera contains sof tware for W indows-based personal computers and Macintosh com puters. These applications pro vide a variety of featur es that let you access and use the pictures stored on the camera memory card.
38 Kodak Sof twar e fo r Windows-Based Computers There a re three Kodak software applications supplied with the DC215 camera for use o n a W indows- based computer . They are: q KODAK DC215 Camera Mounter Software (Mounter) —provides an easy way to view pictur es from the ca mera memory card and copy them to your com puter .
39 5 Kodak Sof twar e for Macintosh Computers There are two Kodak software applications supplied with the DC2 15 camera for use on a Macintosh System. 40 Installing the Sof tware While the Install er is automati cally loadin g your software, take a few minutes to fill out a nd sen d in th e camera product registration card. This allows y ou to receive information regarding software updates a nd registers some of the products included with the camera.
41 6 6 Connecting Y our Camer a In or der for you to transfer pictures taken w ith your camera, you first need to connec t the camera to your computer . The camera can communicate wit h your computer usin g: q RS-232 serial cable con nection for W indows-based computers.
42 Connecting to a Wind ows-Based Computer An RS-232 serial cable is pr ovided so you can connect your camera to a W indows-based computer . 43 6 Connecting to a Macintosh Computer Either a serial cable for a Macintosh compute r or adapter plug for use with the RS- 232 serial cable is provided so you can connect your camera through a serial po rt on a Macintosh computer .
