Chapter 2. Installing or r eplacing har dware This chapter provides instructions on how to install or r eplace har dware for your computer . This chapt er contains the following t opics: • “Handli.

Removing and reinstalling the front bezel Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer .
4. T o reinstall the fr ont bezel, align the other thr ee plastic tabs on the bottom of the front bez el with the corresponding holes in the chassis, then pivot the front bez el inward until it snaps into position. Figure 8. Reinstalling the front bezel 5.

This section provides instructions on how t o install or r eplace a PCI card. Y our computer has one standar d PCI card slot, two PCI Expr ess x1 card slots, and one PCI Express x16 graphics car d slot. See “L ocating parts on the system boar d” on page 9.

5. Install the new PCI car d into the appr opriate PCI card slot on the syst em boar d. Then, install the scr ew to secur e the new PCI car d in place. Figure 12. Installing the PCI card 6. If necessary, connect any cables between the PCI car d and the syst em board.
3. Lay the computer on its side for easier access to the system boar d. 4. Locat e the memory slots on the syst em board. See “L ocating parts on the system boar d” on page 9. 5. Remove any parts and disconnect any cables that might pr event your access t o the memory slots.
7. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sur e that the notch 1 on the new memory module is aligned with the key 2 in the memory slot. Then, pr ess the new memory module str aight down into the memory slot until the retaining clips close and the new memory module snaps int o position.

The heat sink and fan assembly might be very hot. T urn off the computer and wait three to ve minutes to let the computer cool befor e r emoving the comput er cover . T o r eplace the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer .
6. F ollow this sequence t o r emove the four screws that secure the heat sink and fan assembly to the system boar d: a. P artially remove screw 1 , then fully r emove screw 2 , and then fully remove screw 1 . b. P artially remove screw 3 , then fully r emove screw 4 , and then fully r emove screw 3 .
11. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the four screw holes in the heat sink fan duct are aligned with those in the heat sink and fan assembly . Install the four scr ews to secure the heat sink fan duct.
2. Remove the comput er cover . See “Removing the comput er cover ” on page 14. 3. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly . See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 23. Note: Place the heat sink and fan assembly on its side so that the thermal gr ease on the bottom of it does not get in contact with anything.

Figure 23. Removing the heat sink fan duct 5. Disconnect the power supply assembly cables fr om all drives and fr om the 24-pin power connector and 4-pin power connector on the syst em board. See “L ocating parts on the syst em boar d” on page 9 .
8. Install the new power supply assembly int o the chassis so that the screw holes in the new power supply assembly are aligned with the corresponding holes in the r ear of the chassis. Then, install the three screws to secur e the new power supply assembly in place.
10. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the four screw holes in the heat sink fan duct ar e aligned with the corr esponding holes in the heat sink and fan assembly . Then, install the four scr ews to secur e the heat sink fan duct in place.
5. Disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the optical drive. 6. Hold the optical drive and remove the two scr ews that secure the optical drive. Figure 27. 8. Slide the optical drive out of the front of the computer . Figure 29. Removing the optical drive 9. Slide the new optical drive int o the optical drive bay fr om the fr ont of the comput er .
10. Hold the new optical drive and pivot the drive bay assembly upwar d. Align the scr ew holes in the new optical drive with the corr esponding holes in the drive bay . Then, install the two scr ews to secur e the new optical drive in place. Figure 31.
This section provides instructions on how to r eplace the hard disk drive. T o r eplace the hard disk drive, do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the comput er .
5. Hold the hard disk drive and r emove the four screws that secur e the har d disk drive. Then, remove the hard disk drive from the drive bay assembly and disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the rear of the har d disk drive to completely r emove it from the chassis.
7. P osition the new har d disk drive int o the har d disk drive bay and align the scr ew holes in the new har d disk drive with the corr esponding holes in the drive bay . Then, install the four scr ews t o secur e the new har d disk drive in place. Figure 36.
5. Disconnect the car d r eader cable from the USB connect or on the system board. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 9. 6. Release the car d r eader cable from the cable clip that secur es the cable to the chassis. 7. Lower the drive bay assembly .
1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the comput er . 2. Remove the comput er cover . See “Removing the comput er cover ” on page 14.
9. Install the new fr ont fan assembly by aligning the new rubber mounts that came with the new front fan assembly with the corr esponding holes in the chassis, and then push the rubber mounts through the holes. Then, car efully pull on the tips of the rubber mounts fr om the bott om until the new front fan assembly is secur ed in place.
T o r eplace the keyboar d, do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives. Then, turn off all attached devices and the comput er . 2. Disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets. 3. Disconnect the old keyboar d cable from the computer .
4. Connect a new mouse to the appropriat e connector on the computer . Y our mouse might be connected to a PS/2 mouse connect or 1 or a USB connect or 2 .
5. P osition the comput er cover on the chassis so that the r ail guides on the computer cover engage the rails on the chassis. Then, slide the computer cover t o the fr ont of the computer until it snaps into position and is closed. Then, install the two scr ews to secur e the computer cover .
Integr ated cable lock An int egrated cable lock, sometimes referr ed to as the Kensington lock, can be used to secure your computer t o a desk, table, or other non-permanent xtur e. The cable lock attaches t o a security slot at the rear of your computer and is oper ated with a key .
P adlock Y our comput er is equipped with a padlock loop so that the comput er cover cannot be removed when a padlock is installed. Figure 44. Installing a padlock P assword protection T o det er unauthorized use of your computer , you can use the Setup Utility pr ogram to set a password.
5. Move the jumper from the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2) t o the maintenance position (pin 2 and pin 3). 6. Reinstall any parts and r econnect any cables that have been r emoved or disconnect ed. 7. Reinstall the computer cover and reconnect the power cords for the computer and monit or .

Chapter 3. Recovery information This chapter pr ovides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • “Creating and using recovery me.
T o cr eate recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating syst em, click Start ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F actory Recovery Disks . Then, follow the instructions on the scr een. Using recovery media This section provides instructions on how to use recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system.
1. F r om the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore . The Rescue and Recovery progr am opens. 2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window , click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery arr ow.
2. Repeatedly pr ess and r elease the F11 key when turning on the computer . When you hear beeps or see a logo scr een, release the F11 k ey . 3. If you have set a Rescue and Recovery password, type your passwor d when prompt ed. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens aft er a short delay .
2. Repeatedly press and r elease the F12 key when turning on the comput er . When the Startup Device Menu opens, r elease the F12 key . 3. On the Startup Device Menu , select the desired optical drive as the rst boot device. Then, insert the rescue disc into the optical drive and pr ess Enter .
• Use recovery media if all other methods of r ecovery have failed and you need t o r estor e the har d disk drive to the fact ory default settings. See “Creating and using recovery media” on page 49.
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram Y ou can use the Setup Utility progr am to view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which oper ating system you are using. However , the oper ating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword considerations A password can be any combination of up t o 16 (1 to 16) alphabetic and numeric char acters. F or security reasons, it is r ecommended to use a str ong password that cannot be easily compr omised. T o set a str ong password, use the following guidelines: Note: The Setup Utility pr ogram passwor ds ar e not case sensitive.
SA T A Controller When this option is set t o Disabled , all devices connect ed to the SA T A connectors (such as the har d disk drive and the optical drive) are disabled and will not be displayed in the syst em congur ation. USB Setup Use this option to set up USB connect ors.
2. Select Startup ➙ Primary Boot Sequence . Read the information displayed on the right side of the screen. 3. Select the rst boot device, second boot device, and so on. 4. Pr ess Esc t o return t o the Startup menu. Then, select the devices for the Aut omatic Boot Sequence and Error Boot Sequence .
Chapter 5. Updating syst em progr ams This chapter pr ovides information about updating the POST and BIOS, and how to r ecover fr om a POS T and BIOS update failure.
5. When prompt ed to change the machine type and model, it is suggest ed that you do not make this change by pr essing N. However , if you do want to change the machine type and model, pr ess Y , then type in the machine type and model and pr ess Ent er .

Chapter 6. T r oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams This chapt er pr ovides information about some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. Symptom Action The mouse does not work. V erify that: • The computer is turned on. • The mouse is correctly connected to an appr opriate mouse connector (the PS/2 mouse connector or one of the USB connectors) on the computer . • The mouse is clean.
T o cr eate a diagnostic disc, do the following: 1. Download a self-starting bootable disc image (known as an ISO image) of the diagnostic pr ogram from: http://www.lenovo.com/support 2. Use any disc burning softwar e to cr eate a diagnostic disc with the ISO image.
