Chapter 2. Safety information This chapter contains the safety information that you need to be familiar with befor e servicing a computer . General safety F ollow these rules to ensur e general safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and after maint enance.
Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only approved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical curr ents.
– Send another person to get medical aid. Safety inspection guide The intent of this inspection guide is t o assist you in identifying pot entially unsafe conditions on these products. Each machine, as it was designed and built, had requir ed safety it ems installed to pr otect users and service personnel from injury .
• A void contact with other people while handling the part. • W ear a gr ounded wrist strap against your skin to eliminate static on your body . • P revent the part from touching your clothing. Most clothing is insulative and retains a char ge even when you are wearing a wrist str ap.

Chapter 4. Gener al Checkout Attention: The drives in the computer you are servicing might have been r earranged or the drive startup sequence changed. Be e xtremely careful during write oper ations such as copying, saving, or formatting. Data or progr ams can be overwritten if you select an incorr ect drive.

Chapter 5. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility progr am is used to view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which oper ating system you are using. However , the oper ating-system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility pr ogram.

POS T error codes Each time you power -on the system, it performs a series of tests that check the oper ation of the system and some options. This series of t ests is called the Power -On Self- T est , or POS T .

Identifying parts on the motherboar d The motherboard (sometimes called the planar or syst em boar d) is the main cir cuit boar d in your computer . It provides basic computing functions and supports a variety of devices that ar e factory-installed or that you can install later .
Chapter 8. Replacing hardware Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or attempt any r epair before reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warr anty Guide that was included with your comput er or in the Har dware Maint enance Manual (HMM) for the comput er .
Replacing the optical drive Attention: T urn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minut es to let it cool down before removing the cover . Note: It may be helpful to place the computer face-down on a soft at surface for this procedur e.
Step 5. Remove the 3 screws and slide the optical disk drive out as shown. Step 6. Install the new optical drive as follows: a. Align the new optical drive with the bezel, push it into position and secure it with 3 scr ews. b. Line up the optical drive bez el with the optical disk drive bo x and secur e it with the r emaining screws.
Step 4. Remove the rubber caps that prot ects the screws, then r emove the 4 scr ews that secure the computer cover to the chassis. Step 5. Open the side door and r emove the cover fr om this side gently .
Step 6. Lift up the computer cover as shown. Step 7. T o install the computer cover: a. Line up the comput er cover with the chassis as shown. b. Secure the comput er cover t o the chassis with the 4 screws. Replacing the har d disk drive Attention: T urn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minut es to let it cool down before removing the cover .
Step 6. Lift up the back of the hard disk drive and pull it out as shown. Step 7. Remove the 4 scr ews that secur e the har d disk drive to the har d disk drive bay . Step 8. Slide out the hard disk drive out of the bay to r emove it. Step 9. T o install the new hard disk drive as follows: a.
Note: It may be helpful to place the computer face-down on a soft at surface for this procedur e. L enovo recommends that you use a blanket, t owel, or other soft cloth to prot ect the comput er scr een from scr atches or other damage. T o replace a memory module Step 1.
Step 5. Disconnect the 2 antenna cables fr om the WLAN car d. 1 Step 6. Remove the scr ew that secures the WLAN car d t o the motherboard. 2 Step 7. Pull the WLAN card upward to remove it fr om the car d port. 1 2 Step 8. Line up the new WLAN card, then insert it int o the car d port and secur e it to the motherboar d with the screw .
Step 6. Remove the 4 screws that secure the system fan t o the motherboard. Step 7. Remove the heat-sink by lifting it up. Step 8. T o install the new heat-sink: a. Line up the new heat-sink with the mounting holes on the chassis and place it int o position.
Step 5. Remove the 3 screws that secure the system fan t o the motherboard. Step 6. Disconnect the system fan power cables fr om the motherboard. Step 7. Remove the system fan by lifting it up. Step 8. T o install the new system fan: a. Line up the new system fan with the mounting holes on the chassis and place it into position.
Step 6. Remove the memory module. Refer to “Replacing a memory module” . Step 7. Remove the WLAN car d. Refer to “Replacing the WLAN car d” . Step 8. Remove the power butt on. Refer t o “Removing the power button” . Step 9. Remove the system fan.
Note: Y our keyboar d will be connected t o a USB connector on one side or at the r ear of the computer . Step 4. Disconnect the defective keyboar d cable from the comput er and connect the new keyboard cable to the same connect or . Note: The mouse can be r eplaced using the same method.
