Chapter 2. Safety information This chapt er contains the safety information that you need to be familiar with befor e servicing a computer . General safety F ollow these rules to ensure gener al safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the ar ea of the machines during and after maint enance.
Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only appr oved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulate you when working with live electrical currents.

Chapter 4. Gener al Checkout Attention: The drives in the comput er you ar e servicing might have been r earranged or the drive startup sequence changed. Be extr emely careful during writ e oper ations such as copying, saving, or formatting. Data or pr ograms can be overwritten if you select an incorrect drive.

Chapter 5. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility progr am is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which operating system you ar e using. However , the operating-syst em settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
Administrator P assword Setting an Administr ator Passwor d deters unauthorized persons from changing conguration settings. Y ou might want to set an Administrat or P assword if you are r esponsible for maintaining the settings of several computers.
1. Start the Setup Utility progr am (See ”Starting the Setup Utility pr ogram” on page 13.) 2. F r om the Security menu, select Set P ower -On P assword and press the Ent er key . 3. The passwor d dialog bo x will be displayed. T ype the password, and pr ess the Enter key .
5. Return to the Setup Utility pr ogram menu and select the Exit option. 6. Select Save changes and Exit fr om the menu. Note: If you do not want to save the settings, select Discard changes and Exit from the menu.

Identifying parts on the motherboard The motherboar d (sometimes called the planar or system board) is the main circuit board in your computer . It pr ovides basic computing functions and supports a variety of devices that are factory-installed or that you can install lat er .
Chapter 8. Replacing hardware Attention: Do not remove the computer cover or att empt any r epair before r eading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warr anty Guide that was included with your computer or in the Har dware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for the comput er .
Replacing the optical drive Attention: T urn off the computer and wait 3 t o 5 minut es to let it cool down before removing the cover . Note: It may be helpful to place the computer face-down on a soft at surface for this pr ocedure.
Step 6. Install the new optical drive as follows: a. Align the new optical drive with the bezel, push it into position and secure it with 3 screws. b. Line up the optical drive bezel with the optical disk drive box and secure it with the remaining screws.
Step 6. Remove the comput er cover as shown. Replacing the hard disk drive Attention: T urn off the computer and wait 3 t o 5 minut es to let it cool down before removing the cover . Note: It may be helpful to place the computer face-down on a soft at surface for this pr ocedure.
Step 7. Install the new hard disk drive as follows: a. Slide the new hard disk drive int o position and secure it t o the chassis with the 4 scr ews. Step 8. Reattach the computer cover . Replacing a memory module Attention: T urn off the computer and wait 3 t o 5 minut es to let it cool down before removing the cover .
Step 6. Align the new memory module with the memory socket, then insert it and push down on the top edge. Make sur e the latches lock the memory module in place.
Step 1. Remove any media (disks, CDs, or memory cards) from the drives, shut down the oper ating system, and turn off the computer and all attached devices. Step 2. Unplug all power cor ds from electrical outlets. Step 3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer .
Attention: Place the CPU heatsink upside down on a at surface t o prevent thermal grease fr om contaminating other components. Attention: Use an alcohol pad t o wipe the thermal grease off the heatsink and CPU . Step 8. Use a thermal gr ease syringe to place 5 drops of grease on the top of the micr oprocessor .
Step 12. Slide the motherboard up then lift it out t o remove it. Step 13. Place the new motherboard int o the chassis, aligning the scr ew holes in the motherboard with the mounting holes in the chassis. Step 14. Secur e the new motherboar d to the chassis using the scr ews.
