2 Chapter 2 L AN Installation This chapter describes how to insta ll the LevelOne Printer Server in your Local Area Network. Procedure 1. Find the Default LevelOne Printer Server Name • The Default Server Name is shown on a sticker o n the base of t he device.
3 Chapter 3 Configuration This chapter provides an overview of the configuration process. Overview The LevelOne Pri nter Serve r is designe d to supp ort many di fferent pl atforms, and t he configuratio n required would depe nd upon t he enviro nment in w hich it is installed.

4 Chapter 4 Client PC Configuration The chapter details the client configuration required on LAN clients to use the printer or printers attached to the LevelOne Printer Serv er. Overview Before perfor ming client co nfiguration, t he LevelOne Pri nter Server m ust be installe d on your LAN, and con figured as descri bed in Chapte r 3.
Client Setup Checking your Network Pr otocols (Window s 9x) Your PC must have EITHER the TCP/IP or NetBEUI pr otocols install ed. (All ve rsions of Windows afte r Windows 95 have TCP/ IP install ed by defau lt.) • If using the Peer-to-peer Printing , the installation program will check this for you.

Client Setup Windows 9x/ME Setup Before perfor ming the fol lowing proce dure, the Level One Printer Se rver must be i nstalled on your LAN, and conf igured as described in Chapte r 3. Both the LevelOne Prin ter Server and the attached printer should be powere d ON.

Level One Printer Servers • Locate the Delete Port button. This button is on the Details or Ports tab, depen ding on your vers ion or Windows. • If the LevelOne Printer Server's IP Address is changed, and you can no long er pr int, delete the port (see procedur e ab ove) and re-install it.
Client Setup Windows SMB Printing This method re quires no additional soft ware to be installed, but t he NetBEUI or TCP/IP protocol m ust be install ed on your PC. U se the follo wing proced ure to inst all the LevelOne Printer Server's printer as a Windows SM B network printer: 1.
Level One Printer Servers Printing from MS-DOS Programs Windows can r edirect print data from a parallel port on your PC (e.g. LPT1 ) to a networ k printer. This redirection is called "Capture Prin ter Port", and is useful for MS-DOS pr og ram s.
Client Setup Capture Settings - Windows 2000/XP 1. Login as Adm inistrator. 2. Open the c ommand pr ompt wi ndow. 3. Enter the following command to cap ture data from LPT1 (parallel port 1) net use lpt1 server_nameprinter_name /persistent:yes Where server_name printer_name is replaced with the actua l path to your printer.
Level One Printer Servers Windows with Server-based Print Queues With a Server-based Print Queue, the LevelOne Printer Server is installed on an existing Network Server (Windows, Unix , or NetWare) , rather th an on your PC. I f your Network Administrator uses t his system, each Window s client m ust be set up as follows: 1.
Client Setup Macintosh (AppleTalk) The LevelOne Pri nter Server supports Ap pleTalk (EtherTalk) , PAP, ATP, NBP, ZIP and DDP protocols, e nabling M acintosh com puters on t he network to view and use t he LevelOne Printer Server as a regular AppleTalk printer.

5 Chapter 5 BiAdmin Management Utility This chapter describes the installa tion and operation of the BiAdmin Configuration & Management program . Level One Printer Servers Device List The left panel displays a list of all LevelOne Printer Servers found on the network. When a LevelOne Printer Server is selected from the list, its details are displayed in the right panel. Note : If the IP address is "Nul l", please click the Refresh icon to get the value again.
BiAdmin Select the desir ed port from the drop-d own list to display the cu rrent status of the printer attached to the po rt. Possible states are: • Status - On-line, Off-line, or Out of Paper • .

Level One Printer Servers TCP/IP Tab Selecting this tab will allow configu r ation for the TCP/IP network protocol. The basic options are: • Dynamic IP Address (DHCP) - The IP address is obtained automatically, from a DHCP Server on your network. • Fixed IP Address - Y ou must ente r the IP address , Subnet M ask, and Gateway Address.
BiAdmin AppleTalk Tab Generally, no LevelOne Print er Server c onfiguratio n is required i n order t o use AppleTal k. This screen allows you to: • Set the Zone Nam e field to determine which Apple system s can gain acces s to this printer. • The Printer Type field is used to describe the printer driver used for each port.
Level One Printer Servers NetBEUI Tab This screen allows you to: • Choose the Domai n name for the selected LevelOne Printer Server. • Set how fast jobs are sent to the printer by using the Response Time field. • Set the desired opt i o n f or the Abort Job if Er ror Occured setting.
BiAdmin Internet Printing Tab The Internet Printing feature allows you to send print jobs to th e LevelOne Printer Server using Internet E-m ail. Please see Internet Mail Printing Configuration in Chapter 7 - Special Feat ures for details of using this feature.
Level One Printer Servers Port Tab This screen ha s 2 panels - Physical Port and Logical Port . Physical Port The following settings are available: • Selected Physical Port - Select the Physical Printer Port you wish to configure. • Handsh ake Sign al - Select Busy Only or Busy & Ack for the Physical Port.

6 Chapter 6 W eb-Based Management This chapter explains how to use y our Web Browser to configure the LevelOne Printer Server Overview The LevelOne Printer Server inco rporates a HTTP server. This allows you to connect to the LevelOne Print er Server and con figure it usin g your Web B rowser.
Web based Management Connecting to the LevelOne Printer Server 1. Start your Web Browser. 2. In the Addre ss box, enter HTT P:// followed by the IP Address of the LevelOne Printer Server. e.g. http://192.168.0.21 3. You will then be prompted for the password.

Level One Printer Servers Community This is a text field. Enter the name of the community. Access Select the desired level of access. Trap Receivers Receiver No. Select the Trap Receiver nu mber (1..4), a nd click the Get Data butto n to update the display for the selected item.

7 Chapter 7 Special F eatures This chapter covers the special featu res of the LevelOne Printer Server. Overview The LevelOne Printer Serve r has 2 special features: • IPP (Int ernet Printi ng Protoco l). • Proprietary Internet Mail Printing system.
Special Features IPP Client Setup - Windows 98/ME For these platforms, IPP Client software is supplied on the CD-ROM. Also you can distribute t he setup pr ogram (IPP_C LIENT.EXE) to users vi al E-mail . Installing from the CD-ROM 1. Insert the CD-ROM in your drive.

Special Features IPP Client Setup - Windows 2000/XP Windows 2000 and XP have their own IPP Client, and there is no ne ed to install the supplied IPP Client Software . To use the Windo ws IPP C lient with the LevelOne Printer Server, follow this procedure: 1.
Level One Printer Servers 5. Click "OK", and then select the printer manufacturer and model to match the printer connected to the port on the IPP Server. 6. Click "Next", and co mplete the Wizard. The IPP printer is now ready for use.
Special Features Internet Mail Printing The Internet Mail Printing System allows user s to print data to your printer acro ss the Internet. Users send the Internet Leve lOne Printer Server an E - Mail, with the print job norm ally sent as an attachment to the E - Mail.
Level One Printer Servers Internet Mail Printing Configuration The LevelOne Printer Server must be configu r ed with the data in the following table. The supplied BiA dmin utility program, or the Web interface (on 100 BaseT models) can be used to set the following entries on the TCP/IP screen.
Special Features User Software The software provide d for rem ote users (Inte rNet Printing Port) shoul d be installed by everyone intending to use Internet printing. Othe rwise, remote users can print correctly only if: • They send an E - Mail directly to the LevelOn e Printe r Server Mail Account, using their normal E - Mail application.
Level One Printer Servers Mail Server Name or IP Address This is the name or IP Address of your Mail Server . If you are on a L AN, ask the L AN Admini strator. If usin g a dial-up conn ection, use t he data provi ded by your ISP. Your Internet E-mail Address The normal addres s that people use to send you E-m ail.
Special Features 1. Connect your default printer to the InterNet Printing Port. 2. Check that "Reply Notificatio n Mail" in the InterNet Printing Port is ON. 3. From Note pad or anot her text edi tor, print a short m essage (e.g. "T his is a test print") to the Internet Printer.
8 Chapter 8 T roubleshooting This chapter describes some problem situations, which may arise, and the solutions to them. Overview If you encounter printing difficulties, pleas e refer to the appropriate section.
Troubleshooting AppleTalk (Macintosh) Problem No. 1 Why do I get an inc orrect printout? Solution No. 1 Some possible reasons are: • You m ay have chosen B inary encodin g to print t he file. Try to use ASCII en coding. • Some of the fonts, which are in your print file may not be supported by the pri nt er.
Level One Printer Servers • Install the Apple LaserWriter 7 driver. You ar e having trouble printing with the Apple LaserWriter 8 driver. Problem No.
Troubleshooting Windows Printing Problem No. 1 When I tried to install the Printing softw are for Peer-to-Peer printing, I received an err or message and the installation was aborted. . Solution No. 1 This may be caused by an existing installation of the printer port software.
Level One Printer Servers 7. Click the Add Po rt button. On the resu lting screen, select Other , then Printer Server , as the port to add, as shown below.
Troubleshooting 9. Click the Browse Device button, select the desired LevelOne Printer Server, and click OK. 10. Click OK to return to the Printe rs folders, and right-click on th e Printer. Ensure that the Work off-lin e option is NOT checked. The Printer shoul d no longer be gray e d out, and is ready fo r use.
Level One Printer Servers Problem No. 5 When printing from some softwa re applications such as Power Point, it takes a long time and the print out is incorrect. Solution No. 5 The problem is due to the printer, which is being conf igured to Start printing after the first page is spooled .
Troubleshooting Unix Troubleshooting Problem No. 1 LevelOne Printer Server de vice is not recognized. Solution No. 1 Check the following: • The netw ork cable is OK. • There are no routers between t he LevelOne Printer Serv er and the UNIX host duri ng IP addre ss assignment.

Level One Printer Servers LPD Printing LPD is a built-in printing protocol for most UNIX systems. Configuratio n for the m ost common platform s is described below. LPD on IBM AIX 4.15 Before proceeding, en sure that the LevelOne Printer Serve r has been assigned an IP Address.
Unix LPD on System V Before begi nning LPD Set up, ensure that an IP A ddress has been assi gned to the LevelOne Printer Server. Keep th e following points in mind : The remote host name is the name of the LevelOne Printer Server. The remote printer name is t he print que ue name for t he Logi cal Printer.
