10 Chapter 1 iPod Basics Setting the Back light Timer Y ou can set the back light to turn on and illuminate the screen for a c er tain amount of time when you press a butt on or use the Click Wheel. T he default is 1 0 seconds. m Choose Settings > Backlight Timer , and then choose the time you want.

12 Chapter 1 iPod Basics Disconnecting iP od It ’ s important not to disconnect iPod fr om your computer while music is being loaded . Y ou can easily see if it ’ s OK to disconnect iP od by looking at the iPod scr een. Important: Don ’t disconnect iPod if y ou see the “Do not disconnect ” message.

Chapter 2 Music Features 17 Impor ting Music into Y our C omputer T o listen to music on iP od, you first need to get that music int o iT unes on your computer . There are thr ee ways of getting music and other a udio into iT unes: Â Purchase music , a udiobooks, and videos, or download podcasts online from the iT unes Store.

T o set how music is loaded from y our computer onto iP od, you connect i P od to your computer , and then use iT unes preferences t o choose iP od settings.
22 Chapter 2 Music Features While music is being loaded from your comput er onto iP od, the iT unes status window shows progress , and the iP od icon in the Source pane flashes r ed. When the update is done, a message in iT unes says “iPod updat e is complete.
Chapter 2 Music Features 23 Note: When you manage songs and video yourself , y ou must always eject iP od from iT unes before you disc onnect it. T o add a song, video, or other item to iP od: 1 In the iT unes Source pane, click Music or another Library item.

Y ou can press the C enter button multiple times fr om the Now Playing screen to get to other information and options , such as the rating scr een for songs and audiobooks , album art, podcast inf ormation, reading s peed, and more.
26 Chapter 2 Music Features T o play songs in the On-The-Go playlist: m Choose Music > Playlists > On-The-Go and choose a song . T o remove a song from the On-The-Go pla ylist: m Select a song in the playlist, and hold down the Center button un til the song title flashes.
