1 Chapter 1: Introduction Connect your USB-equipped desktop or notebook computer to a wireless net- w ork at incredible speeds with the Linksys W ireless-G USB Network Adapter . By incor porating tw o new , blazing fast technolo gies -- USB 2.0 and W ireless- G -- the Adapter deliv ers data rates up to 54Mbps (5 times as f ast as 802.
If the wireless netw ork is relativel y small and needs to share resources only with the other computers on the wireless netw ork, then the ad-hoc mode can be used.
5 Chapter 4: Software Installation and Configuration for Windows 2000 The W ireless-G USB Network Adapter Setup W izard will guide you through the installation procedure. The Setup W izard will install the WLAN Monitor and driv er, as w ell as conf igure the Adapter .
7 6 4. If you chose Infrastructure Mode, go to Step 5 no w . If y ou chose Ad-Hoc Mode, select the cor rect operating channel for your netw ork from the Channel drop- do wn menu. Then, select the Networ k Mode from the drop- do wn menu. Click the Next button, and go to Step 5 .

Chapter 6: Driver Installation for Windows XP After connecting the Adapter to your PC, as sho wn in Chapter 5, you’ ll need to install the dri ver . 1. W indows XP will automati- cally detect the Adapter . Insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-R OM drive.
13 12 3. If WEP is enabled , the screen in Figure 6-6 will appear . Enter the WEP key of your wireless netw ork in the Networ k key f ield , and re-enter it in the Conf irm networ k key f ield. Then click the Connect button, and go to step 4. 4. The screen in F igure 6-7 will appear if your connection is acti ve.
The Link Inf ormation screen, sho wn again in Figure 7-3, displa ys the signal strength and link quality information about the cur rent connection and provides a button to click for additional status information. Ad-Hoc Mode or Infrastructur e Mode - The screen indicates whether the Adapter is cur rently w orking in ad-hoc or infrastructure mode.
17 16 The Site Survey screen, shown in F igure 7-5, displays a list of infrastructure and ad-hoc netw orks av ailable for connection. SSID - The SSID or unique name of the wireless netw ork. Signal - The percentage of signal strength, from 0 to 100%. Site Information Wir eless Mode - The mode of the wireless network currently in use.
19 18 Import - Click the Import button to import a prof ile that has been sa ved in another location. Select the appropri- ate f ile, as sho wn in Figure 7-7, and click the Open but- ton. Export - T o sa ve the prof ile(s) in a different location, click the Export button.
3. The Networ k Setting screen, sho wn in Figure 7-11, will appear . If your netw ork has a DHCP server (or Router), click the radio button next to Obtain an IP addr ess automatically (DHCP) and click the Ne xt but- ton to continue. If your netw ork does not ha ve a DHCP ser ver (or router), click the radio button next to Specify the IP addr ess .
5. The Ad-Hoc Mode Settings screen, for those w ho chose an Ad-hoc network, will appear . Select the cor rect operating channel for your netw ork from the Channel drop-do wn menu. Then, select the Networ k Mode from the drop- do wn menu. Click the Next button to continue or click the Back button to change any settings.
25 WEP (Disab led/64-bit WEP/128-bit WEP) - If you do not w ant to use WEP encryption, choose Disabled . T o use WEP encryption (recommended to increase netw ork security), select 64-bit or 128-bit WEP from the drop- do wn menu, and enter either a Passphrase or WEP key .
Can I run an application from a remote computer over the wireless network? This will depend on whether or not the application is designed to be used o ver a netw ork. Consult the application’ s user guide to deter mine if it supports operation o ver a netw ork.
