4 Intr oduction Thank you for selecting the Marantz Professional PMD620 Handheld Solid State Recorder . The PMD620 is an audio recor der that records in digital audio formats onto a SD (Secure Digital) memory card. SD cards, also used in digital cameras, ar e widely available at consumer electronics r etailers and computer resellers.
5 – Computer compatible The PMD620 recor ds dir ectly onto SD cards. Recordings can be transferr ed to your desktop or laptop computer by removing the SD car d from the PMD620 or by connecting the PMD620 to your computer via the USB port.

14 Preparations Bef ore Use A C adapter connection When using the recor der with the provided AC adapter , follow the procedur e below to connect the AC adapter . If you wish to use batteries, please refer to the Using batteries section. Notes: Only use the AC adapter that is provided with the recorder.

16 Safety cautions on handling batteries Always follow the points below when using batteries to avoid electrolyte leakage, overheating, fir e, rupturing, ingestion, etc. • Electrolyte leakage or corr osion may occur if batteries are kept inside the recor der for pr olonged periods of time.

22 A udio Input for Recor ding The audio input for recor ding can be set from the “Input” menu. ( ☞ P .47) If “Input” of menu is Auto and External MIC is connected, Recording source is External MIC. When LINE jack is connected, Record ing source is LINE audio.
23 Recording Format The PMD620 can recor d in several compression algorithms. • Compressed r ecor ding using MP3 or uncompressed r ecor ding 16/24-bit linear PCM ( ☞ P .47). • Stereo or Mono format. ( ☞ P .48). Rec Format Sample Rate Channel Bitrates File Extension MP3-H 44.
24 Recording Time Char t All times are appr oximated record times. Differ ent media manufacturers allow more or less space for err or correction and the like on their r espective products.
25 Recording Le vel Control The recor ding level control lets you select the type of input level control. – At the Manual Level Contr ol When Manual is set in the Level Control setting, press the REC LEVEL + or REC LEVEL – button to control the audio input level.

32 Adv anced Features Microphone(s) – Attenuator The micr ophone attenuation switch per mits the direct use of microphones that dif fer in sensitivity . • 0dB : No microphone attenuation. • –12dB : Input from a microphone(s) connected to the MIC jack is cut by 12dB.
33 Low Cut Filter The bass region of the input audio is cut as the audio is r ecor ded. Set to On to reduce noise, such as the sound of the wind when recor ding outdoors.
34 Copy Segment Copy Segment physically turns your “highlighted” section into a new and separate file, without destroying the original sour ce file(s). 1. During playback, press the REC button when the audio reaches your desired In Point. REC DISPLA Y VOL REC P AUSE STOP/CANCEL “Set as IN?” is displayed.
35 5. Press the 3 / 8 / ENTER button to store the Out point. “Copy Segment?” is displayed. 6. Press the 3 / 8 / ENTER button to start the Copy process. “Executing...” will be shown on the display . When the copy procedure is completed, the display will show “Completed” for 1 sec.
36 Remote The PMD620 allows you to use an optional remote contr oller RC600PMD. (sold separately). The RC600PMD is designed for microphone interviews. It attaches to your micr ophone. The remote’ s five feet cord with a four contact mini plug, plugs into the PMD620.
37 USB mode The PMD620 recor ds directly onto SD cards. Recordings can then be transferr ed to your desktop or laptop computer by removing the SD car d from the PMD620, or by connecting the PMD620 to your computer via the USB port. Audio recor ded in the popular MP3 compression format is directly available for intranet or internet file sharing.
38 • While USB is on, a set screen is displayed. • The SD card in the PMD620 appears as a r emovable device on your computer . • The audio files are in a folder that is named MPGLANG1. 40 Preset Load Preset Load allows you to load the pr eset value from the SD card in the PMD620. When perfor ming preset load, use a SD car d in which the preset contents from Pr eset Save ( ☞ P .41) are stored. This function is particularly useful when setting multiple PMD620s with the same settings.
41 Preset Save Preset Save saves all of the pr eset values onto the SD card. T o set the saved files onto the PMD620, perfor m Preset Load ( ☞ P .40). 1. From Stop, press and hold the DISPLA Y button for 3 seconds. 2. Press the V OL + or VO L – button to select “Preset Save”.
42 Utility Menu Utility menu lets you rename files, erase files and format the SD card. 1. From Stop, press and hold the DISPLA Y button for 3 seconds. 2. Press the V OL + or VO L – button to select “Utility Menu”. 3. Press the 3 / 8 / ENTER button.
43 5. Rename the file title. T ext can be inserted and deleted. Press the 4 or ¢ button to move the cursor to the place you wish to insert text into or delete text from. T o inser t text Press the VO L + or VO L – button to select the character you want to insert.
44 4. Press the V OL + or VOL – button to select the file you want to delete. Then press the 3 / 8 / ENTER button. “File Delete?” message is displayed.
45 Preset Menu Y ou can store to 3 detailed presets on the r ecorder for such settings as recor ding input, recording format, playback mode, etc. There ar e 23 setting items in the preset menu, and 3 presets can be set with the desired conditions. 47 1. Input Audio input for recor ding are selected using the Input Menu. If Input of menu is Auto and External MIC is connected, Recording sour ce is External MIC. When LINE jack is connected, Recording sour ce is LINE audio. When the both connected at the same time the External MIC is active as priority .
48 3. Rec Channel The Rec Channel menu choice allows you to select the channel of the audio file. 1. From Stop, press and hold the DISPLA Y button for 3 seconds. 2. Press the V OL + or VOL – button to select Preset Menu. Then press the 3 / 8 / ENTER button to accept.
49 5. Sample Rate The Sample Rate menu choice allows you to select the sampling rate 44.1kHz or 48kHz. 1. From Stop, press and hold the DISPLA Y button for 3 seconds. 2. Press the V OL + or VOL – button to select Preset Menu. Then press the 3 / 8 / ENTER button to accept.
50 7. A uto T rack With the Auto T rack (Automatic T rack incrementing) on, a new file begins automatically at specified intervals of recor ding time. The Auto T rack can be set to increment every 1, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes, or every 1, 2, 6, 8, 12 or 24 hours.

58 23. Machine ID An audio file has Machine ID information. This infor mation is included in the file name. For example, if the Machine ID is “aaaaa”, the first file is numbered “aaaaa001.wav” or “aaaaa001.mp3”. The Machine ID setting applies to all three pr esets.
