Black plate (16,1) Front Seats (Manually Operated Seats) WARNING Do not modify or replace the front seats: Modifying or replacing the front seats such as replacing the upholst ery or loosening any bolts is dangerous. The front seats contain air ba g components essential to the supplemental restrain t system.
Black plate (17,1) q Seat Recline WARNING Do not drive with the seats reclined: Sitting in a reclined position while the vehicle is moving is dangerous because you don't get the full protection from sea t belts. During sudden braking or a collisi on, you can slide under the lap belt and suffer serious inte rnal injuries.
Black plate (18,1) CAUTION When returning a rear -reclined seatback to its upright position, make sure you hold on to the seatback with you r other hand while operating the lever. If the seatback is not supported, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury.
Black plate (19,1) NOTE The seat temperature is r egulated automatically by a thermostat. Other than turning it on or off, it cannot be adjusted. Front Seats (Electrically Operated Seats) WARNING Do not modify or replace the front seats: Modifying or replacing the front seats such as replacing the upholst ery or loosening any bolts is dangerous.

Black plate (29,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to decrease the possibility of severe injury during accidents and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belt s. All of the seat belt retractors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (30,1) WARNING Always wear your seat belt and make sure all occupants are pro perly restrained: Not wearing a seat belt is extremely dangerous. During a collision, occupants not wearing seat belts could hit someone or things inside th e vehicle or even be thrown out of the vehicle.
Black plate (31,1) CAUTION Belt retraction may become difficult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep them clean. For more details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to “ Cleaning the Lap/Shoulder Belt Webbin g ” (page 8-58).
Black plate (32,1) q Automatic Locking Mode Always use the automatic locki ng mode to keep the child-restraint system from shifting to an unsafe position in the event of an acciden t. T o enable seat belt autom atic locking mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instruct ed on the child-restraint system.

Black plate (132,1) Starting the Engine NOTE Engine-starting is contr olled by the spark ignition system. This system meets all Canadian Interference- Causing Equipment Standard r equirements regulating the impulse electrical field strength of radio noise.
Black plate (133,1) Brake System q Foot Brake Y our Mazda has power-assisted brakes that adjust automatically through normal use. Should power-assist fail, you can stop by applying greater force than norm al to the brake pedal. But the distance required to stop will be greater than usual .
Black plate (134,1) CAUTION Driving with the parking brake on will cause excessive wear of the brake linings or pads. NOTE For parking in snow , refer to W inter Driving (page 4-8) regar ding parking brake use.
Black plate (135,1) Y ou may notice that the pedal is ha rder to push or that it may go closer to the floor . In either case, it will take longer to stop the vehicle. 1. With the engine stopped, check the brake fluid level immediatel y and add fluid as required (page 8-22).
Black plate (136,1) q ABS W arning Light The warning light stays on for a few seconds when the ignition switch is turne d to the ON position. If the ABS warning light stays on while you're driving, the ABS control unit has detected a system malfunction.
Black plate (137,1) q Brake Pad W ear Indicator When the disc brake pads become worn, the built-in wear indicators contact the disc plates. This causes a screeching noise to warn that the pads should be replaced. When you hear this noise, consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible.
Black plate (138,1) WARNING Do not use sudden engine braking on slippery roa d sur faces or at high speeds: Shifting down while driving on wet , snowy, or frozen roads, or while driving at high speeds causes sudden engine braking, which is danger ous.
Black plate (139,1) Downshifting When you must slow down in heavy traffic or on a steep upgrade , downshift before the engine starts to overwork. This reduces the chance of stal ling and gives better acceleration when you need more speed. On a steep down grade, downshifting helps maintain safe speed and prolongs brake life.
Black plate (140,1) Automatic T ransaxle Controls Indicates that you must depress the brake pedal to shift (The ignition switch must be in the A CC or ON position).
Black plate (141,1) q T ransaxle Ranges The shift lever must be in P or N to operate the starter . P (Park) P locks the transaxle and prevents the front wheels from rotating.
