Black plate (14,1) Seats WARNING Do not modify or replace the front seats: Modifying or replacing the front seats such as replacing the upholst ery or loosening any bolts is da ngerous. The front seats contain air bag components essential to the supplemental restrain t system.
Black plate (15,1) q Seat Recline WARNING Do not drive with either front seat reclined: Sitting in a reclined position while the vehicle is moving is dangerous because you do not get the full protection from sea t belts. Du ring sudden braking or a collisi on, you can slide under the lap belt and suffer serious inte rnal injuries.
Black plate (16,1) CAUTION When returning a rear-reclined seatback to its upright position, make sure you hold on to the seatback with you r other hand whi le operating the lever. If the seatback is not supported, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury.
Black plate (17,1) WARNING Ø Be careful when using the seat warmer. The heat from the seat warmer may be too ho t for some people, as indicated below, and could cause a low-t emperature burn.
Black plate (18,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to d ecrease the possibility of severe injury during acciden ts and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and passenger always wear seat belts. All of the seat belt retr actors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (19,1) WARNING Always wear your seat belt and make sure all occupants are properly restrai ned: Not wearing a seat belt is extremely danger ous. During a collis ion, occupants not wearing seat belts could hit someone or things inside th e vehicle or even be thrown out of the vehicle.
Black plate (20,1) CAUTION Belt retraction may become difficult if the belts and seat belt guides are soiled, so try to keep them clean. For more details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to “ Cleanin g the Lap/Shoulder Belt Webbing ” (page 8-55).
Black plate (21,1) q Automatic Locking Mode T o enable seat belt automatic locking mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instructed on the child-restraint system.
Black plate (22,1) Seat Belt WARNING Always wear the seat belt with it correctly routed in its guide: Wearing a seat belt without the seat belt routed in its guide is dangerous because the seat belt would not be able to provide adequate protection in an accident, whi ch could resu lt in serious injury.
Black plate (23,1) WARNING Positioning the Lap Por tion of the Seat Belt: The lap portion of the seat belt worn too high is dangerous. In a collision, this would concentrate the impa ct force directly on the abdo minal area, causing serious injury. Wear the lap portion of the belt snugly and as low as possible.
Black plate (24,1) Seat Belt Pretensioner and Load Limiting Systems For optimum protection, the driver and passenger seat belt s are equipped with pretensioner and load limiting systems . For both these systems to work proper ly you must wear the seat belt properly .
Black plate (25,1) Do not modify the components or wiring, or use electronic testing devices on the pretensioner system: Modifying the componen ts or wiring of the pretensioner system, including the use of electronic testing devices is dangerous.
Black plate (26,1) Seat Belt Extender If your seat belt is not long enough, even when fully extended, a seat belt extender may be available to you at no charge from your Authorized Mazda Dealer . This extender will be only for you and for the particular vehicle and seat.
Black plate (27,1) NOTE When not in use, remove the seat belt extender and stor e it in the vehicle. Black plate (32,1) Seating a child in a child -restraint system on the passenger seat is dangerous: This vehicle is equipped with both a passen ger seat weight sensor and a passenger air bag deactivation indicator light (page 2-43).
Black plate (33,1) Never use one seat belt on more than one person at a time: Using one seat belt for more than one person at a time is dangerous. A seat belt used in this way cannot spread the impact forces properly and the two passengers could be crushed together and seriously injured or even killed.
Black plate (34,1) Installing a Child- Restraint System The passenger lap/shoulder belt can easily be converted into the automatic locking mode, which must be done to hold the child-restraint system. Some child-restraint systems also employ specially designed LA TCH attachmen ts; refer to “ LA TCH Child-Restra int Systems ” (page 2-25).
Black plate (35,1) 4. Push the child-res traint system firmly into the vehicle seat. Be sure the belt retracts as snugly as possible. Clicking from the retractor will be heard during retraction if the system is in automatic locking mode. If the belt does not lock the seat down tight, repeat this step.
Black plate (36,1) NOTE l Inspect this function before each use of the child-r estraint system. Y ou should not be able to pull the shoulder belt out of the r etractor while the system is in the automatic locking mode.
Black plate (37,1) LA TCH Child-Restraint System Y our Mazda is equipp ed with LA TCH lower anchors for attachment of specially designed LA TCH child-restraint systems behind the passenger seat that slide throu gh the passenger seat when it is in the fully rearward position.

Black plate (42,1) Do not sit too close to a door or lean against doors in vehicles with side air bags: Sitting too close to the side air bag modules or placing hands on them is extremely dangerous.
Black plate (43,1) Do not modify the suspension: Modifying the vehicle suspension is da ngerous. If the vehicle's height or the suspension is modified, the vehicle will be unable to accurate ly detect a collision resulting in incorrect or unexpected air bag deployment and the possibility of serious injuries.

Black plate (140,1) Fuel Requirements V ehicl es with catalytic convert ers or oxygen sensors must use ONL Y UNLEADED FUEL, which will reduce exhaust emissions and keep spark plug fouling to a minimum. Y our Mazda will perform best with fuel listed in the table.
Black plate (141,1) Emission Control System Y our vehicle is equipped with an emission control system (the catalytic convert er is part of this system) that enables your vehicle to compl y with existing exhaust emissions requirements.
Black plate (142,1) Engine Exhaust (Carbon Monoxide) WARNING Do not drive your vehic le if you smell exha ust gas inside the vehicle: Engine exhaust gas is dangerous. This gas contain s carbon monoxide (CO), which is colorless, odorless, and pois onous.
Black plate (143,1) Before Getting In l Be sure the window s, outside mirrors , and outside lights are clean. l Inspect inflation press ures and condition of tires. l Look under the vehicl e for any sign of fluid leaks. l If you plan to back up, make sure nothing is in your way .
Black plate (144,1) Break-In Period No special break-in is necessary , but a few precautions in the first 1,000 km (600 miles) may add to the performance, economy , and life of your Mazda. l Do not race the engine . l Do not maintain one const ant speed, either slow or fast, for a long perio d of time.
Black plate (145,1) Hazardous Driving WARNING Be extremely carefu l if it is necessa ry to downshift on slipper y sur faces: Downshifting into lower gear while driving on slippery surface s is dangerous. The sudden change in tire speed could ca use the tires to skid.
Black plate (146,1) Floor Mat WARNING Make sure the floor mats are hooked on the retention pins to prevent them from bunching up under the foot pedals: Using a floor mat that is not secured is dangerous as it will interfere with the accelerator and br ake pedal operation, which could result in an accident.
Black plate (147,1) Winter Driving l Carry emergency gear, including tire chains, window scraper, flares, a small shovel, jumper cables, and a small bag of sand or salt. Ask an Authorized Mazda Dealer to perform the follow ing precautions: l Have the proper ratio of antifreeze in the radiator .
Black plate (148,1) q Tire Chains Check local regulations before using tire chains. CAUTION Ø Chains may affect han dling. Ø Do not go faster than 50 km/h (30 mph) or the chain manu facturer's recommended limit, whichev er is lower. Ø Drive carefully and avoid bumps, holes, and sharp turns.
