McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installatio n Guide xii Preface Related Documentation Other publications that provide additional information about the McDA T A 4416 switch module are: • McDA T A 4416 Product Information Guide , publication number , 59179-00.
General Description 1-1 1 General Descr iption This section descri bes the features and capabilities of the McDA T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switch Module in a server blade chassis.
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installa tion Guide 1-2 Switch Module Controls and LEDs Switch Module Controls and LEDs The switch module LEDs provide information about the switch modu le’s operational status. These LEDS include the Identif ier LED, System Fault LED, and Input Power LED.
General Description 1-3 Switch Module Controls and LEDs Switch Module LEDs The switch module LEDs shown in Figur e 1-3 pr ovide status information about switch module operation. Refer to “External Port LEDs” on pa ge 1-5 for information about port LEDs.
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installa tion Guide 1-4 Fibre Channel Ports Fibre Channel P or ts The switch module has 6 external Fi bre Channel ports thr ough which to connect to devices or other switches an d 10 internal ports connecting to the server midplane.
General Description 1-5 Fibre Channel Ports Ex tern al P ort L ED s Each external port has its own Logged-In LED (L) and Activity LED (A) as shown in Figur e 1-6 . Figure 1-6. External Port LEDs Port Logged-In LED (Green) The Logged-in LED indicates the logged-in or initializat ion status of the connected devices.
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installa tion Guide 1-6 Fibre Channel Ports T ransceivers Switch modules support SFP optical transceivers for the Fibr e Channel ports. A transceiver converts el ectrical signals to and fr om optical laser signals to transmit and receive data.
General Description 1-7 Ethernet Port E t he rne t P o rt The Ethernet port shown in Figure 1-7 is an RJ-45 connector that provides a connection to a management workstatio n thr ough a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet cable. A management workstation can be a W indows® or a Linux® workstation that is used to configure and manage the s witch fabric.
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installa tion Guide 1-8 Switch Module Management Switch Module Management The switch supports the following management tools: • McDA T A Embedded W eb Ser.
Planning 2-1 2 Planning Consider the following when planning a fabric : • Devices • Device Access • Performance • Multiple Cha ssis Fabrics • Switch Module Services • Fabric Security • Fabric Management Devices When planning a fabric, consider the number of public devices and the anticipated demand.
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installatio n Guide 2-2 Device Access De vice Access Consider device access need s within the fabric. Access is cont r olled by th e use of zones and zone sets. Some zoning strategies include the following: • Group devi ces by operating system.
Planning 2-3 Device Access Soft Zones Soft zoning divides the fabric for purp oses of contr olling device discovery . Devices in the same soft zone automa tically discover and communicate freely with all other members of the same zone. The soft zone boundary is not secure ; traffic acr oss soft zones can occur if addresse d correctly .
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installatio n Guide 2-4 Performance P erf or mance The switch module supports class 2 and class 3 Fibre Channel service with a maximum frame size of 2148 bytes at tran smission rates of 1-Gbps, 2-Gbps, or 4-Gbps.
Planning 2-5 Performance Bandwidth Bandwidth is a measure of the volume of data that can be transmitted at a given transmission rate. A Fibre Channel port can transmit or receive at nominal rates of 1-Gbps, 2-Gbps, or 4- Gbps depending on the device to which it is connected.
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installatio n Guide 2-6 Multiple Chassis Fabrics Multiple Chassis F abr ics By connecting switches together you can expand the number of available ports for devices. Each s witch in the fabric is identified by a unique domain ID, and the fabric can automatica lly reso lve domain ID conflicts.
Planning 2-7 Switch Module Services The domain ID lock allows (False) or pr events (T rue) the reassignment of the domain ID on that switch. Switches c ome from the factory with the domain ID set to 1, the domain ID lock set to False, and the principal priority set to 254.
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installatio n Guide 2-8 Switch Module Services • Secure Socket Layer (SSL) : Provides for secur e SSL connections for McDA T A Embedded W eb Server , McDA T A Element Manager , and CIM.
Planning 2-9 Fabric Security Fa b r ic Se c u r i t y An effective se curity profile begins wi th a security policy that states the requir ements. A threat analysis is nee ded to define the plan of action followed by an implementation that meets the se curity policy requir ements.
McD A T A 4416 Fibre Channel Switc h Module Installatio n Guide 2-10 Fabric Security Device Security NOTE: Device security is available only wi th the SANtegrity Enhanced PFE key . Refer to McDA T A Sw itch Module Manageme nt Guide for information about installing a PFE key .
Planning 2-11 Fabric Management User Account Secur ity User account security consists of th e administration of account names, passwords, expiration date, and author ity level.
