Air volume and d istribution ar e controlled automaticall y. This setting ca n be used all year around. Economy The function of t his setting c orresponds to the automatic mode.
25 Air Distribution Press button repeated ly until the requested sy mbol is displa yed. Air Volume Press - or + side o f rocker s witch until the requested blo wer speed is attained. A choice of 7 blower speeds is available. To switch the automatic clima te control off, press - side of rocker switch until symbol OFF is displa yed.
26 Activated Cha rcoal Filte r To select, p ress button. To cancel, p ress button again. An activated c harcoal filter markedly reduces bad odors and remove s pollutants fro m the air enter ing the passenger compart ment. The blo wer speed is slightl y increased to supply a constant volume o f air.

78 Program Mo de Selector S witch The trans mission is provided with a selector switch for Standard "S" and Winter (snow and ice) "W" progra m modes. Warning! Always be cert ain of the program mode selected since the vehi cle driving chara cteristics chang e with the selection of the pro gram mode.
79 Cruise Control Any given spee d above approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) can be maintained with the cruise control b y operating th e lever. 1 Accelerate an d set: Lift lever briefly t o set speed. Hold lever up to accelerate. 2 Dec elerat e and set: Depress leve r briefly to set sp ee d.
80 Note: If the engine does not brake the vehicle sufficiently while driving on a downgrade, the sp eed you set on the cruise control may be exceed ed and you may have to step on the bra ke pedal to slow down.
81 Engine Oil Pressure Gauge The oil pressure at idle speed may drop if the engine is at operating temperature. T his will not jeopard ize the engine's oper ational reliabi lity.
82 Outside Temperature In dicato r The temperature sensor is loca ted in the front bumper ar ea. Due to its l ocation, the sensor can be affected b y road or engine heat duri ng idling o r slow driving.
83 Low Engine Coola nt Level Warning Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, the warning lamp comes on and goes out with the engine running. If the war ning lamp do es not go out after starting t he engine, o r if it comes on while driving, then the coo lant level has dropped belo w the required level.
84 Exterior Lamp Failure In dicato r Lamp With the ke y in steering loc k position 2, a dim indicator lamp co mes on, and goes out when the engine is runnin g. With the ke y in steering loc k position 2 or with the engine running, a b right illumination o f this lamp i ndicates an exterior lamp failure.

86 Anti lock Bra ke Syste m ( AB S) The ABS i mproves steering c ontrol of the vehicle during braking ma neuvers. For maximum benefit, do not pump the brake pedal, r ather use firm, steady brake pedal p ressure.
87 Electronic Tractio n System (ETS) The ETS improves vehicle tra ction, especially under slipper y road conditions. It enga ges at vehicle spe eds up to approximately 24 mph (40 km/h), and applies the brakes to the sp inning drive wheel. At approximatel y 50 mph (80 km/h), the ET S switches o ff.
88 Acceleration Slip Co ntrol (ASR) The accele ration slip contro l will engage at all vehicle speeds, if o ne or both drive wheels begin to los e traction and spin.

90 Electronic Stability Pr ogram (ESP) The ESP enhances directional co ntrol and improves tractio n of t he vehicle under any drivi ng condition. Over/understeeri ng of the vehicle is counteracted by appl ying brakes to the left or right side wheels. T he ESP warning lamp, located in the speedometer dial, start s to flash.

96 Hood To unlock the hoo d, pull r elease lever (1) under the driver's side of the instrument panel. At the same time handle (2) will extend out of the radiator grill (it may be neces sary to lift the hood up slightly). Caution! To avoid damage to the windshield wipers or hood , ope n the hood onl y with wipers in the parked position.
97 Checking Coolant Level To check the coo lant level, t he vehicle must be parked on level ground and the engine stopped . Check coolant le vel only when coolant is cold.
98 S 320 Checking Engine Oil Leve l 1 Oil dipstick 2 Oil filler cap To check the e ngine oil le vel, par k vehicle on level ground, with engine at normal operational te mperature. S 420, S 500 Check engine oil level app roximately 5 minutes after sto pping the e ngine, allowing for the o il to retur n to the oil pan.
99 Checking Automatic Tran smission Fluid Level When noticing fluid loss or gear shifting malfunctions, have your autho rized Mercedes-Benz d ealer check the transmission fluid level. Models S 420 , S 500: The transmission has a per manent fill of automatic tra nsmission fluid.
100 Spare Wheel, Lug Wrench 1 Trunk floor 2 Strap 3 Luggage bo wl 4 Lug wrench Roll back the floor mat. Lift the trunk floor (1) and engage strap (2) in the eyelet on the edge of the trunk lid . To remove the spare tire, turn luggage bowl (3) to the left and re move.
