Intr oduction Congratulations on choosing o ne of NDC’s I nstantWave Hig h Rate wireless networking product’s family . InstantWave High Rate was one of the first IEEE 802.11b wi reless standard c ompli ant product s in the indust ry and was designed t o maximize the convenien ce of network ing.
Glossar y Group ID / BSSID A Group ID (the 802.1 1 standard uses the term BSSID) is t he ID of a wir eless cell. A wireless cell is usually made up of stations in an area that the radio signal can comfortably cover. In ot her words, any wireless station in the cell can communicat e with any ot her wi thi n reac h of the radi o signal.
Ho w to Use this Guide InstantWave High Rate is ex tremely versatile in provid ing varying levels of network m anagement. Fo r Small Office/Home Offi ce users, setu p and configuration is a quick, four-step pr ocess.
Planning Y our Netw or k Infrastructure Network Types An Infrastructu re network i s formed by several stat ions and o ne or more Access Points (APs), with the stations within a set distance from the AP. Figure 1 depicts a typical Infras tructure netw ork topology .
Server Figure 2. AP to Wire d Ethernet Bridge Type 3. The third typ e of n etwork is co mposed of multiple APs and multiple Stations ( Figure 3 ). The APs could also be connected to serve rs on the wired Ethe rnet network. The shadowed area represents signal overlap bet ween subnet 1 (AP-1) and subnet 2 (AP-3).
Planning an Infrastructure Network This section e xplains som e of the thin gs you need to consider i n planni ng an Infrastructure network. Setting up is a two step process.
Roaming InstantWave High Rate products are eq uipped with seamless roaming capabilities. Roaming is ne cessary to prev ent mobile St ations from being di sconnected from the network as t hey move a round.
Access Point Placement Guidelines A characteristic of radio com munication is t he “interferenc e” problem . Radio is receptive to interference . Therefore, th e more interference you can avoid, the better performance you will get from wireless products.
Getting Star ted Access Point Hardware Installation Access Point Hardware Setup explains how to quickly setup the Access Poin t for use via a wire d Ethernet conn ection, and using the facto ry default settings. Fo r installation in network s us ing o ther than the default settings, i.

AP COMFig T ool The AP COMFig Tool is a Windows 95/98 /ME/NT/2000 based utility th at is u sed via a COM port connection between t he AP and a PC. It provides the following functions: • Sets necessary AP pa rameters (e.g., IP address, Dom ain name, etc.
AP COMFig Service After connecting with the AP, click on the Service tab to open the Service screen ( Figure 7 ). Th e Service screen provides access to the managem ent features. Figure 7. AP COMFig Tool/Serv ice Click the View and Modify AP Conf i gur at i o n button.
Here you may: AP Alias Name Assign the AP a unique name Domain Nam e (ESSID) This is more commonly called the Domain Nam e but is define d in the 802.11 Wirel ess Standard a s ESSID. Stations and AP(s) in the same group must use the same Dom ain Name Transmission Rate The transmission rate at which the data packets are transmitted by the AP.
