Multi-zone/Multi-sour ce T he ZR-4630 MultiZone Receiver incorpor ates matrix preamplifier technology to pro vide as many as three source components and the built-in tuner to six listening zones simultaneously . F inally , Dad can relax to the sound of his favorite music in the den w hile the kids are listening to their favorite music by the pool.
T he R-4 Remote - T he R-4 Remote provides system control via an ergonomic hand-held IR remote control. Zones that have been installed with Niles IR Sensors can take ad vantage of the R-4 Remote, providing system control from anyw here in the room.

Remov able P ow er Cord An IEC remo v able power cord provides for easy handling during installation. This is the simplest of the ZR-4630 configurations (see Figure 4). It depicts one Niles ZR-4630 MultiZone Receiver installed to provide sound to six listening zones. Each zone consists of one room with one pair of speakers. One Solo ™ Master Keypad Module is included in each zone for user control.
Ke ypads and IR Sensors K eypads and IR sensors enable the user to control the Niles ZR-4630 MultiZone Receiv er and its connected source components. Source component IR commands are progr ammed into the Niles ZR-4630 MultiZone Receiv er .
CONFIGURA TION 2 – ADDING ZONES USING MUL TIPLE ZR-4630’S More than one ZR-4630 can be used if the system requires more than six zones. A maximum of three ZR-4630’ s, providing up to 1 8 zones, can be combined to create a larger multi-zone/multi-sour ce system.
16 CONFIGURA TION 3 – DISTRIBUTING SOURCE-COMPONENT A UDIO SIGNALS When sharing source components with three ZR-4630’ s (see Figure 6) or two ZR-4630’ s and a Home T heater system (see Figure 7), a Niles A VD A-3 Audio/Video Distribution Amplifier is required for each source.

External amplifiers can be used to provide more po wer in a zone. In Figure 12, an external amplifier has been connected to zone 3.

Using the fixed setting with an external amplifier enables a zone to be divided up into indi vidual rooms using convention- al Niles Impedance Matching V olume Controls.
CONFIGURA TION 11 – SYSTEM P A GING AND EXTERN AL TELEPHONE SYSTEM A P aging Input connection on the rear panel of the ZR-4630 provides a connection for the paging output signal of pop- ular telephone systems for voice paging through the speakers in the listening zones (see Figure 1 5).
26 CONFIGURA TION 12 – IR REPEA TING FOR CONTROL OF LOC AL COMPONENTS An IR Repeating System can be integrated into a room connected to the Niles ZR-4630 (see Figure 1 7). T his enables a single IR Sensor (installed in that room) to control local components with a hand-held IR remote control.
Infr ared Command Compatibility IR control testing was conducted on man y equipment brands to determine their compatibility with the ZR-4630. T ypical A/V sour ce components (i.e., CD , D VD, DSS, Cable Boxes, etc.) from eac h brand were chosen for the test.
28 WHA T IS SOURCE-POWER SYNCHRONIZA TION? T he ZR-4630 has been designed to keep track of the ON/OFF condition of the three sour ce components connected to the system. T his enables source components that utilize the same IR command for ON and OFF to be automated.
CHOOSING A SYNCHRONIZA TION METHOD Once you establish that all sour ce components in the system have compatible IR commands, the next step is to choose the appropriate Sync Method for eac h component. T here are two ways to detect w hen a component is ON or OFF: Video or V oltage Sync.
30 V oltage Sync V oltage Sync is also a reliable method of synchronization if c hosen and implemented correctly . T he Sync Inputs can detect the control out voltage from a Niles Signal Sensing product interfaced to the sour ce component.
Light Sensing Using a light sensor (LS-1) to synchronize y our components is usually your last choice, simply because the other choices are more reliable.
32 OPERA TIONAL O VERVIEW MASTER KEYS/SOURCE BUTT ONS T he Master Keys av ailable on the Solo ™ Master K eypad Module and the Source Buttons on the hand-held R-4 Remote (Figure 21) provide “one-touc h activ ation” of the ZR-4630 and source components.
Master Ke y/Source Button Ev ents When you press a Master K ey on a Solo ™ Master Keypad Module or a Source Button on the hand held R-4 Remote, as many as four ev ents occur . T he first event is factory programmed and acti v ates the zone whic h you are located.
MASTER KEY/SOURCE BUTT ON OPERA TION T he Master Key/Sour ce Buttons have three methods for operating the system. Single Zone Oper ation T he first method, a quick tap of a Master K ey/Source Button in a zone (holding the K ey/Button for less than three seconds), causes only that zone to turn ON.
OFF Ke y Events When you press the OFF K ey/Button, as many as two ev ents occur . T he first event is factory programmed and is responsible for turning the zone or all zones OFF every time the OFF K ey/Button is pressed.
V OLUME KEYS/V OLUME BUTT ONS T he V olume Keys on the Solo ™ Master K eypad Module and the V olume Buttons on the hand-held R-4 Remote provide control of v olume for individual zones.
MUTE KEY/MUTE BUTT ON T he Mute Key/Button pro vides a method of turning the sound ON/OFF for a brief moment in an individual zone without turning the zone OFF (this also prevents the sour ce component from being turned OFF).
FUNCTION KEYS/BUTT ONS T he Solo ™ Master Keypad Module, the Numeric ™ Accessory K eypad Module, and the hand-held R-4 Remote include v arious function keys for control of the built-in tuner and the connected source components. F igure 26 illustrates the av ailable function keys for all of the control devices.
Function Ke y/Button Operation for the Built-in T uner T he commands for operation of the built-in tuner from the function keys/Buttons are pre-programmed. F igure 27 depicts the av ailable commands for the tuner , their function key/button location, and a description of their action on the tuner .
Band-Shift Button T he Band Shift Button toggles the selected tuning band between AM and FM. Station Scan Buttons A quick tap of the Station Scan Buttons increments the tuner one frequenc y step.
Important Note: Oper ation of an identical sour ce component is not possible using its actual IR commands in a zone installed with an IR Sensor . (i.e., using the source component’ s original remote control or a learning remote control programmed with these IR commands).
OPERA TING A SYSTEM INTEGRA TED WITH A HOME THEA TER Oper ation from the Ster eo Zones Pro vided by the ZR-4630 User operation from the zones pro vided by ZR-4630’ s, are not affected when integrating a Home T heater to share source components (see System Configur ations 4 & 5).
When the Home T heater turns ON, it provides a 1 2V Status signal that is connected to the Home T heater Sync Input on the rear panel of the ZR-4630. T his 1 2V Status signal provides the ON/OFF status of the Home T heater to the ZR-4630.
Speaker Wire Connections C AUTION! All speaker wire connections must be made with the amplifier OFF . PLA CEMENT Place the ZR-4630 on a flat, level surface suc h as a table or shelf, with its weight equally distributed on each of i t s f o u r f e e t .
TERMINA TING FOUR-P AIR TWISTED CABLE T he Solo ™ Master Keypad Modules, the Expander , and the ZR-4630’ s System Expansion connections require a four -pair twisted cable with a one-to-one wiring configuration. T o maintain consistenc y throughout all Intellipad Ci installations, we recommend the color -coding pattern described in Figure 31.
CONNECTING IR SENSORS An IR sensor can be connected to a Solo ™ Master K eypad Module with a C A T 5 cable. See Figure 34 for wiring instructions employing T568A arc hitecture.

PROGRAMMING A LEARNING REMO TE FOR ZONE OPERA TION Learning remote controls can be taught the IR commands of the Niles R-4 Remote to provide indi vidual zone operation. T hese IR commands operate the ZR-4630 and its associated source components from an y zone equipped with an IR Sensor .
Method #1 – Controlling Shar ed Sour ce Components with IR Repeating and 12V Home T heater Status When using IR Repeating, IR programming for the source components can be accomplished b y pro- gramming the actual IR commands from the sour ce component’ s included remote control into the Home Theater learning remote control.
Method #3 – Controlling Shar ed Sour ce Components with Niles R-4 Commands and without 1 2V Home T heater Status A third method of programming is av ailable in situations where a 12V DC status signal is not av ailable from the Home Theater .
