Contact with the antenna affects ca l l quality and m ay cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than necessary .

REMO VE TH E BATTE RY 3 After you h ave removed the back cover , insert your finger into the finger grip and lift the battery from its compartment.

[ 14 ] Shared memory The following features in your phone use shared memory: Phone book, text and multimedia messages, im ages and ringing tone s in gallery , calendar and to-do notes, and Java games and applications. Using any of these features leaves less m emory for oth er features.

[ 28 ] 4 Basic operatio ns • SET THE CLOCK Before many functions such as call timers and other features will operate properly , you need to s e t the clock. 1 At the Start screen, press Men u 4-1-1 ( Set tings > T ime and d ate setti ngs > Clo ck ).
[ 29 ] Basic operations Tip: T o quickly search the list of entries in your Phone book, press any key in which the letters match the fir s t letter of the name for which you’re searching.
[ 30 ] Adjust the earpiece volume • To increase the volume of a call, press the volume up key on the left side of th e phone. • To decrease the volume of a call, pr ess the volume down key on the left side of the phone. When adjusting the volume, a b ar chart appears in the display indicating the volume level.

[ 34 ] REMO VE TH E FRON T COVE R 4 Starting at th e bottom of the phone, run a fingernail along both sides of the phone to pull the front cover away gen tly from the rest of th e phone. INSTALL THE KEYMAT AND NEW FRONT COVER 5 Remove the key mat from the old front cover and place it in to the new front cover as shown.

[ 36 ] 5 T ext entry Y ou can us e two metho ds for enteri ng text and nu mbers . •T h e standa rd m ode is the only way to ente r names into such things as the Phone book, ca lendar notes, and rena.
[ 37 ] Text entry Enter punctuation and spe cial characters While at an y text entr y screen, press a to display special characters (press and hold a if predictive tex t is on). The foll owing special characters are available: Use four-way scrolling Navigate special characters using the scroll keys much as you would a joystic k.
[ 38 ] Write with predictive text For example, to write Nokia with the English dictionary selected, press each of the following ke ys only once : (with predictive te xt on ).
[ 39 ] Text entry Add new words to the dictionary If you encounter a word that predictive text doesn’t recognize, a question mark ( ? ) follows t he word and Spell appears in the lower left of the disp lay . •P r e s s Spel l , enter your new word using th e keypad, and press Save .
[ 40 ] 6 Manage phone security Lock the keypad (K eyguard) Remember to lock your phone’s keypad to preven t accidental calls. If the keypad is locked, it unlocks when you receive a ca ll. After the call, the lock automatically reactivates. Important : When Keyguard is on, calls may be poss ible to dial emergency number s (for example, 9 1 1).
[ 4 1 ] Manage phone security 2 After a brief pause, you’ re prompted to enter the security code. The default code is 1 2345. Enter the security code a nd press OK .
[ 42 ] 5 Enter a na me for the number and pre ss OK . A confirmation note appears in the display and you’re returned to the fixed dialing number list .
[ 43 ] Manage phone security • If you try to add a name (without a number) to the fixed dialing list, you’ll receive an err or message • If you try to browse th e fixed dialing list, bu t haven.
[ 44 ] The PIN code The PI N code prot ects the SI M card fr om una utho rized acce ss. The PIN code can be 4- 8 digits in len gth. After three successive incorrect entries the PIN code is blocked and you’ll be asked to enter the personal unblocking key (PUK) code.
[ 45 ] Manage phone security The PIN2 Code The PIN2 code is required for feature s such as Fixed dialing. I f you enter an incorrect PIN2 code th ree times in succession, the PIN2 code is blocked and you’ll have to enter the PUK2 code. Note: The or iginal PIN2 code must be obtained from you r wireless provider .
[ 46 ] 7 The P hone book Y our Phone book can save up to 300 names, with multiple numbers and text notes f or each na me. The amount of n umbers and text entrie s that you can save may vary , depending on th eir length and the total number of entries in the Ph one book.
[ 47 ] The Phone book • SAVE NAMES AND NUMBERS Y ou can save names and numbers to phone memory or to SIM memory . Quickly save a name and number 1 At the Start s creen, en ter the phone number you wish to save. 2 Press Opt ions , ensure Save is highlighted, and press Select .
[ 48 ] Save addresses and notes To sav e an email address, you’ll need to add it to an existing entry (n ame). 1 Find the entry (name) in you r Phone book to which you’d like to add an address or n ote. 2 With the entry highlighted, press Detai ls.

[ 56 ] Messages (Menu 1) If you’ve subscribed to a message service, you can send and receive messages to compatible phones th at are also subscribed to a message service. Y ou c an al so send a nd r eceive picture messages, multimedia messages, and e-mail if supported by your network .

[ 58 ] • TIPS FOR COMPOSING A MESSAGE Predictive text input Predictive text allows you to w rite messages using a built-in dictionary . It’s much faster than u sing the traditional “multi-tap” method. For each letter of the w ord that you’re spelling, you onl y need to press the corresponding key on your keypad once .

[ 67 ] Menu fu nctions •E - M A I L Y ou c an send e-ma il up to 16 0 charac ters in le ngth to an yone with an e-mail address. First, you’ll need to setup an e- mail profile and modify a few other settings. It takes ju st a few minutes, and you only need to do this once.

Tip: Save yourself the trouble of e ntering the mailbox codes each time you dial voicemail. See “A utomate voicemail” later in this section for more information.
[ 76 ] Write down some information 1 Write down your voice mailbox nu mber . 2 Call and check y ou r voicemail as y ou normally would. 3 Write down your interaction with the r ecorded prompts step-by-step. Ke ep in mind that each voicemail s ervice may vary .

Use service commands Use the Servi ce comma nds editor to enter and send service r equests (also known as USSD commands) to your wireless provider . Contact your wireless provider for information about specific service commands.
[ 85 ] Menu fu nctions Call l og (Menu 2) Call log stores information about the last 1 0 missed, 10 received, or 2 0 dialed calls. It also adds the total duration of all calls . When the number of calls exceed the maximum, the most recent call replaces the oldest.
