1 Intr oduction This guide shows ho w to install media dependent adapters (MD As) into su pported Nor tel Netw orks * p roducts. T able 1 lists the av ai lable MD A models.

3 10B ASE-T /100 B A SE-TX MD As This secti on descri bes three 10B ASE-T/100B ASE-TX MD A models. The three models can supp ort v arious product lines (see T able 2 on page 2 for a complete list of supported product lines). For installation instruction s, see “Installing an MD A” on page 35.

5 The 10B ASE-T/100B ASE -TX MD A ports can operate at either 10 Mb/s or 100 Mb/s. The port speed is determined throug h autone gotia tion with its connect ing de vice. T able 3 describes the 400- 4TX MD A and the 8100-4TX MD A front-p anel compon ents.

10 Dual-P or t 100B ASE-FX Model s The three dual-p ort models are: • 400-2F X MD A Not supported on th e Bu siness Policy Switch and Pas s por t 8132. • 8100-2F X MD A Suppor ts BaySt ack 350/450, B ayStack 4 10, and Pas spor t 813 2 Modul es. • BPS2000- 2FX MD A Supports the Business Policy Switch.

21 Shortwave Gig abit Models The two 1000BASE-S X (sho rtwave gigabi t) MDA models are: • 450-1S R MD A -- single MA C MD A with a separate redun dant Phy ( backup Ph y port). O nly one Ph y port can be acti v e at any time. If the acti ve Ph y port fails, the redundan t Phy po rt automatically become s the acti ve port.

35 Installing an MD A The Upli n k/ Exp ans io n Module s lo t o n suppor ted s wi t ches can accommodate a single MD A. The connection can be either an RJ-45 10/100B ASE-TX MD A or a fiber (100B ASE-FX or 1000B ASE-SX/LX) MD A with an SC or MT -RJ connector .

37 6. Attach devices to the MD A ports. Refer to your switch ’ s User Guide fo r instr u ctions on attaching de v i ces to the MD A ports. After connecting the port cables, follo w the instructions to con nect po wer and verify the installatio n . Repl acing an MD A When replacing an in stalled MD A : 1.
38 Installing GBICs This section describes ho w to install the gigab it interface con verters ( GBIC s) to you r 450-1G BIC MD A ’ s Ho st por t. The follo wing optional GBIC versions are a v ailable to suppor t your 45 0-1GBIC MD A: T a ble 13.
39 The GBICs are a v ailable in dif fer ent case styles (Figure 12). One typ e has two spring ta bs at the fron t of the GBIC; the other type has an extractor handle on the front. GBICs are s hipped with a p rotecti v e rubber plug in the connectors. Lea ve the plug in place when no cables are connected to the GBIC.
40 T o install a GB IC: 1. Remove the GBIC from its protect ive packaging . 2. Insert the GBIC into t he Host port on the MD A (Figur e 13). GBICs are keyed to prev ent improper insertion. If the GBIC resis ts press ure, do n ot force it. R emo v e it, turn it ov er , and reinsert it.
41 Removing an Install ed GBIC T o remov e an installed GBI C: 1. If th e GBIC has sp ring tabs, press in on the tabs on each side of the GBIC as y ou pull the GBIC out of the MD A ’ s Hos t port (Figur e 1 4).
42 1000B ASE-LX Multimode Applications For 1000B ASE-LX multimode applications, the lo ngwa v e gigab it transcei vers must be mode cond itioned e xternally via a special offset SMF/MMF patch cord. The offset SMF/MMF patch cord allo ws the same transcei ver to be used for both multimode and single-mode fiber .
