12 En About Home Theater Thanks to the A V receiv er’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound wi th a real sense of movement in your ow n home—just like being in a movie thea ter or concert hall. W ith Blu-ray Discs, you can enj oy DTS and Dolby Digital.
13 En Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 7.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need se ven speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
14 En • Don’t connect mo re than one cable to each speak e r terminal. Doing so may damage the A V receiver. • Don’t connect one speaker to se veral terminals.
15 En Using Dipole Spea kers Y ou can use dipole speakers for the sur round and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in tw o directions. Dipole speakers typically ha ve an arro w printed on them to indicate how the y should be positioned.
16 En Connected image with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve co mpleted and double-checke d all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to ma ke good connections (loo se connections can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
17 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assignments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 39 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 72 ) and “Using an RIHD-compatibl e T V , Player , or Recorder” ( ➔ 73 ).
18 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 40 ). Connecting External Components The on-screen setup menus appear only on a TV that is connecte d to the HDMI OUT .
19 En Note • When you con nect to both A UX INPUT A UDIO jacks and A UX INPUT LINE IN jack at the same time, A UX INPUT LINE IN jack will be gi ven a higher priority . • The A V receiver can output audio and video signals from the AU X I N P U T jacks to the VCR/D VR OUT jacks.
20 En W ith u (Remote Interacti ve), you can use the follo wing special functions: ■ System On/Auto Po wer On When you start playback on a component connected via u while the A V recei ver is on Standb y , the A V recei ver will au tomatically turn on and select that com- ponent as the input source.
21 En The A V recei ver supports se veral conn ection formats for comp atibilit y with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the fo rmats supported by your components.
22 En T urning On/Off the A V Receiver T urning On Press ON/ST ANDBY on the fr ont panel. or Press RECEIVER followed by ON/ST ANDBY on the remote co ntroller . The A V rece iv er comes on, the display lights, and the ST ANDBY indicator goes of f. T urning Off Press ON/ST ANDBY on the front panel or the r emote controller .
23 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the language used for the onscreen setup menus. See “OSD Setup” ( ➔ 50 ). ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remote controller Y ou can display v arious info rmation about the current input source as follows.
24 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is cance lled when the A V receiv er is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off aut omatically after a specif ied period.
25 En Note *1 If Pure Audio ( Eur opean , Australian and Asian ) o r Direct listening mode is selected, “ Dynamic EQ ” and “ Dynamic V olume ” cannot be selected.
26 En Using A udysse y 2EQ ® T o create a listening en vi ronment in your home theater that all listeners will enjo y , Audyssey 2EQ ta kes measure- ments at up to three positions within the listening area. Position the microphone at ear height of a seated listener with the microphone tip pointed directly at the ceiling using a tripod.
27 En Note • When Audyssey 2EQ Room Corr ection and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ A udyssey ” ( ➔ 42 ). The A udyssey indica tor will light ( ➔ 9 ). • Y ou can cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup at any point in this procedur e simply by disconnecting the setup microphone.
28 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection.
29 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 47 ).
30 En Finding Stations by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by ty pe. Listening to T raffic Ne ws (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic ne ws. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Press R T/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .
31 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capa bility , and how to record audio and video from different sources. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiver must be turned on for recording.

39 En Explanatory Notes Main Menu Input/Output Assign Monitor Out Y ou can specify the output resolution for the HDMI OUT and COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT and ha ve the A V receiv er upcon vert t he picture resolution as nece s- sary to match the resolution supported b y your TV .
40 En Component Video Input If you connect a video component to a component video input, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 , you must assign “ IN2 ” to the “ BD/D VD ” input selecto r .
41 En ■ Speakers T ype ` Normal : Select this if you’ ve conne cted your front speakers normally . ` Bi-Amp : Select this if you’ ve bi-amped your front speak ers. Note • Powered Zone 2 cannot be used if “ Speakers T ype ” is set to “ Bi-Amp ” ( ➔ 56 ).
42 En ■ LPF of LFE (Low-P ass Filter f o r the LFE Channel) ` 80Hz , 90Hz , 100Hz , 120Hz W ith this setting, you can specify the cutof f frequency of the LFE channel’ s lo w-pa ss filter (LPF), whic h can be used to filter out unwanted hum. The LPF only applies to sources that use the LFE channel.
43 En ` Audyssey : This is selected automatic ally by Audysse y 2EQ ® Room Correction and Speaker Setup function. The A udyssey Dynamic V olume indicator will light ( ➔ 9 ) and “ Dynamic EQ ” and “ Dynamic V olume ” become av ailable ( ➔ 45 ).
44 En Main menu Audio Adjust W ith the Audio Adjust functions and settings, you can adjust the sound and listening modes as you like. Multiple x/Mono ■ Mult iplex This setting dete rmines which channel of a stereo multi- plex source is ou tput.
45 En Note •I f t h e “ Surr Back ” setting is set to “ None ” ( ➔ 41 ), this setting cannot be selected. •I f t h e “ Front High ” or “ Front Wide ” setting is enabled ( ➔ 41 ), this setting is fixed at “ Manual ”.
46 En ■ Reference Level A udyssey Dynamic EQ™ Reference Level Offset ` 0dB : It should be used when listening to movies. ` 5dB : Select this setting for cont ent that has a v ery wide dynamic range, such as classica l music. ` 10dB : Select this setting for jazz or other music that has a wider dynamic range.
47 En IntelliV olume ■ IntelliV olume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. W ith IntelliV olume, you can set the input le vel for each input selector individually . This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
48 En Picture Adjust Using Picture Adjust, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noi se appearing on the scree n. T o view the TV picture while setting, press ENTER .
49 En ■ Film Mode *2 ` Vi d e o : Does not process in either “ 3:2 ” or “ 2:2 ”. ` Au t o : Adjusts to the picture source, automatically selecting “ Picture Mode ”. ` 3:2 : Selected wh en the picture source is movie f ilm, etc. ` 2:2 : Selected when the picture source is computer graph- ics, animation, etc.
50 En ■ Dolby D/Dolb y D +/T rueHD W ith this setting, you can spec ify the listen ing mode to be used when a Dolb y Digital or Dolby Digital Plus for- mat digital au dio signal is pla yed (D VD, etc.). Spe cifies the defa ult listeni ng mode for Dolb y TrueHD sources, such as Blu-ray or HD D VD (input via HDMI).
51 En Changing the Remote Controller’ s ID TUNER For FM/AM tuning to w ork properly , you must specify the FM/AM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting is change d, all radio presets will be deleted.
52 En ■ Audio Return Channel ` Off : Select “ Off ” if you don’t want to use audio return channel (ARC) function. ` Au t o : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT of the A V re ceiv er. Audio return channel (ARC) function enables an HDMI 1.
53 En Note • T o bypass the bass and treble tone circuits, select the Direct, Pure Audio (European, A ustralian and Asian models) or TH X lis- tening mode. • Alternativ ely , you can use the A V receiver’ s TON E and TO N E LEVEL + / – ( ➔ 54 ).
54 En A udio Selector Y ou can set priorities of audio output when there are both digital and analog inputs. ■ Aud io Selector ` ARC : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT of the A V re ceiv er. *1 W ith this selection the TV’ s audio can be automati- cally selected as a priori ty among other assignments.
55 En Zone 2 In addition to your main listeni ng room, you can also enjoy playback in the othe r room, or as we call Zone 2. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two ways you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiver.
56 En If you’ v e connected your Zone 2 speake rs to the A V receiv er, as explained in “C onnecting Y our Zone 2 Speak- ers Directly to the A V receiver” ( ➔ 55 ), you must se t the “ Front High / Fr ont Wide / Zone2 ” settin g to “ Zone2 ”.

62 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiver’ s remote controller (RC-765M) to control your o ther A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a component that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
63 En Y ou’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remote cont rol codes provid ed are correct at the time of printing, but are subject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled by pointing the remote controller at the A V receiv er, not the component.
64 En Yo u c a n r e s e t a REMOT E MODE to its default remote control code. Y ou can rese t the remote controller to its default sett ings. By pressing REMO TE MODE that’ s been progr ammed with the remote control c ode for your component, you can control your component as below .
