- 11 - Preparation Preparation Att ach ing the Lens Cap/Shoulder S trap ∫ Att aching the Lens Cap • When you turn the camer a of f or c arry th e camera , at tac h the len s cap t o protec t the surf ace of the lens. Pass the s tring through the hole on the camer a.
Preparation - 12 - ∫ Att aching th e Shoulder S trap • We recom m end att aching the sh oulder str ap when using th e cam era to prevent it from dropping. Pass the shoul der strap through the hole at the shoulder s tr ap e yelet. Pass the s houlder strap through the stopper and fasten the shoulder strap.
- 13 - Preparation Att ach ing the Lens Hood In bright sunlight or backlight, the lens hood wi ll minimize lens flare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts of f excess lighting and improves the picture quality . • Check that t he camera is turned of f. • Close the fl ash.
Preparation - 14 - Charging the Battery ∫ About batteries that you can use with this unit • Use the dedicate d cha rger and ba ttery . • The battery is not c harged when the camera is shipped. Charge the battery before use. • Charge th e bat tery with the charger ind oors.

Preparation - 18 - Inserting and Removin g the Card (optional)/the Battery • T urn the power s witch to [O F F] and confir m that th e lens barrel is retrac te d. • We rec ommend using a Panasonic card. Slide t he releas e lever in the dire ction of the arrow and open the card/battery door .
- 19 - Preparation About the Built-in Memory /the Card • Y ou can copy the r eco rded pict u res to a ca rd. (P145) • Memory size: Approx. 70 MB • The access time f or the built-in memory may be longe r than the access ti me fo r a car d. The following cards which conform to the SD video standard can be used with this unit.
Preparation - 20 - Note • Do not turn this unit off, remove i ts battery or card, or disconnect the AC adaptor (optional) when the access indication is lit (when pictures are being w ritten, read or deleted, or the bu ilt-in memory or the card is being forma tted).

Preparation - 22 - Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the camera is shipped. T urn the camera on. • The power lamp 1 light s when you turn this un it on. • If the lan guag e select screen is no t dis played, proceed t o step 4 .
- 23 - Preparation Select [CLOC K SET] i n the [REC ] or [SETUP] m enu, and press 1 . (P46) • It can be chan ged in steps 5 a nd 6 to set the clo ck. • The clock setting is maint aine d for 3 months using the built-in clock battery even without the battery .

Basic - 26 - Tip s for t aking good pictures ∫ Direction Detection Function ([ROT A TE DISP .]) Pictures recorded with the camera held vertica lly are played back vertically (rotated).
- 27 - Basic Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with Y our Favorite Setti ngs (Program AE Mo de) The camera automatically sets the shutt er speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in [REC] menu.
Basic - 28 - In Program AE Mode, you can change the pres et aperture value and shutter speed without changing the exposure. This is called Program Shift. Y ou can make the background more blurred by decreasing the aperture value or record a moving subject more dynamically by slo wi ng the shutter speed w hen taking a picture in Program AE Mode.
- 29 - Basic Focusing Aim the AF area a t the subject, and then pres s the shutter b utton halfway . • AF area is displ ayed larger during the digi t al zoom or when it is dark. ∫ About f ocus range The focus range is displayed when operating the zoom .
Basic - 30 - ∫ When the subject is not in focus (such as when it is not in the center of the composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF area at the subject, an d then press the shutter button h alfway to fix the focus and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button halfway while moving the camera as you compose the picture.
- 31 - Basic Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures Using the Autom atic Function (Intelligent Auto Mode) The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the sub ject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this mode for beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .

- 33 - Basic When the camera identifies the optimum scene, the i con of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 s econds, after whi ch its color changes to t he usual red. Basic - 40 - Playing Back Motion P ictures This unit was designed to play motion pictures using the A VCHD, MP4 and QuickTime Motion JP EG formats that were taken with this model (only). ∫ Operations performe d during Moti on Pi cture Playb ack The cursor displayed during playback is the same as 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 .
- 41 - Basic Y ou can create a single still picture from a recorded mot ion picture. Press 3 to p ause motion picture pla yback. Press [MENU/SET] . • Confirmati on screen is displayed. It is ex ec uted when [YE S] is selected. Exit th e menu af ter it is execut ed.
Basic - 42 - Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. • Pictures on the bu ilt -in memory or the card, which are being played back will be del et ed. • Picture s t hat are not in th e DC F st andard or those th at are protected c ann ot be deleted.

U se a batter y wit h su ffic ient battery powe r or the AC adaptor (op t ional) . • Depending on th e number of pictures to be de leted, it may take some t ime to delete them. T o delete multiple pi ctures (up to 50) or all th e pictures Press [ ‚ ].
Basic - 44 - Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pict ures and playing them back as you like and menus that enable you t o have more fun with the camera and use it more easily . In particular , the [SETUP] menu contains some important settings relating to the camera’s clock and power .

Basic - 46 - • If you s et [ MENU RESUME] (P58) in the [SE TUP] m enu to [ON ], the screen sho ws the l ast sel ected menu item when t he ca mera w as tu rned off. It is set to [ON] at t he time of purc hase. Example: In t he [REC] menu, ch ange [AF MO DE] from [ Ø ] (1-area-focusing) to [ š ] (Face Detection) Press [MENU/SET] .
- 47 - Basic By using the Quick Menu, some of the menu settings can be easily found. • The feature s that can be adju sted using Quick Menu are det ermined by the mode or a di splay style the c amera is in. Items that can not be used are di s played in gray .
Basic - 48 - About the Setup Menu [CLOCK S ET], [ECONOMY] and [AUTO REVIEW] are important items. Check their settings before using t hem. For details on how to select the [SET UP] menu settings, refer to P46 . • Refer to P22 for details. • Setup/can cel of summer time [ ] can be pe rfo rmed by pressing 3 at the t ime the area is selected.
- 49 - Basic • The numb er of d ays that hav e p assed s ince t he departure date can b e printed out using the “PHOTOf unSTUDIO” bundled sof tware o n the CD-ROM ( supplied). • The tra ve l date is calculat ed using the date in the clock se tting and the depart ure date you set.
Basic - 50 - • When you connect the camera to a TV , the volume of t he TV speake rs does not c hange. • Refer to P96 for details. • Refer to P104 for de tails about the [REC] Mo de men u. • It will adjust the LCD monit or when the LCD monito r is in use, and the vi ewf inder when the viewfinde r is in use.
- 51 - Basic • The bright ness of the pic tures displayed on t he LCD monit o r is increased so so me su bject s may appear dif ferently from ac tu ality on the LCD monitor .
Basic - 52 - • When the recorded picture and the hi stogram do not match each other under the following condition s, the histogram is displayed in orange.
- 53 - Basic • MF position will be memorized in the fo llowin g c ase s: – T u rning the camera off – When s w itching to a type of focus other than Manual Focus – When swi tc he d to Playback Mode • Zoom position will be set all the way to wide when the [ZOOM RESUME] is set to [OFF].

Basic - 56 - • When the [RES ET] setting is selec t ed durin g recording, the oper ation that reset s the lens is also performed at th e s ame time . Y ou will hear the sound of the lens ope rating but this is normal and not ind icative of malfunction ing.

Basic - 58 - • This will work when th e HDMI mini cable (opt iona l) is con nected. • Refer to P150 for t he met hod to playback 3D pictures in 3D. • Use a battery with suffi cient bat tery power or the AC ad aptor (opti onal) when f ormatting. Do not turn the c amera of f during formatti ng.

Recording - 62 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with the Zoom Y ou can zoom-in to make people and objects appear closer or zoom-out to record landscapes in wide angle. T o m ake subj ects appear even c loser (maximum of 46. 9 k ), do not set the picture size t o the highest setting for each aspect ratio ( X / Y / W /) .

Recording - 64 - Note • The indic ate d z o om magn ification is an appro ximati on. • “EZ” is an abbrev iation of “E x ten ded Optica l Zoom”. It is possi ble to t ake more magnified pictures wit h the opti c al zoom. • The lens barrel ex tends or retr acts according to t he zoom position.
- 65 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures using the Flas h A T o open the f lash Press the flash open button. B T o c los e the fla sh Press the flash until it clicks. • Be sure to clos e the flash when not in use. • The flas h se tting is fixed to [ Œ ] while th e flash is cl os ed.
Recording - 66 - ¢ The flash is activated twice. The subject should not move until the second flash is activated. Flash interval depends on the brightness of the subject. [RED-EYE REMOV AL] (P122) on the [REC] Mo de menu is set to [ON], [ ] appear s o n the flash ico n.

Recording - 70 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Close-up Pictures ( [AF MACRO]/[MACRO ZOOM]) Press [AF /AF # /MF] to dis play the focus switchin g screen. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct [AF MACRO] or [MACRO ZOOM], and the n press [MENU/SET]. • T o cancel, selec t [AF] .
- 71 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with Manual Fo cus Use this function when you want to f ix the focus or when the dist anc e between the lens and the subject is determined and you do not want to activate Auto F ocus. Press [AF /AF # /MF] to dis play the focus switchin g screen.
Recording - 72 - ∫ MF Assist If [MF ASSI ST] (P54) in the [SETUP] me nu is set t o [ON], when focus is achieved, the MF area (locations that are in focus) is enlarged. • If you pre ss [ME NU/SET] while MF Assist is displa y ed, the MF area can be moved us ing 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 .
- 73 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with the Self-Timer Note • When you pres s the shutter bu tton once fully , the subject is aut omatically focused jus t before recording.
Recording - 74 - Applicable modes: Compensating the Exposure Use this function when you c annot achieve appropriate expos ure due to the difference in brightness between the su bject and the background. ∫ Operate with the rear dial 1 Press the rear dial and enable [ È ].
- 75 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures Using Auto Bra cket In this mode, 3 pictures are automatic ally recorded in the selected exposure compensation range each time the shutter button is pressed. With Auto Bracket d 1E V Note • When Aut o Bracket is set, [ ] is displayed on the s creen.
Recording - 76 - Applicable modes: Setting the Lig ht Sensitivity This allows the sens itivity to light (ISO sens itivity) to be set. Setting to a higher fi gure enables pictures to be taken even i n dark plac es without the resulting pictures coming out dark.

Recording - 78 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures by Specifying the Aperture/ Shutter Speed Set the apertur e value to a higher num ber when you want a sh arp focus background. S et the aperture value to a lower number when you want a soft focus backgroun d.
- 79 - Recording Determine the exposu re by manually setting the aperture value and the shutter speed. The Manual Exposure Assistance appears on the lower portion of t he screen to indicate the exposure. Set the mod e dial to [ ]. Rot ate t he rear dia l to set the ape rture and s hutter speed .
Recording - 80 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures with different im age effect s (Creative Control Mode) While checking the sub j ect on the screen, you can set desired effects and continue taking pictures. Set the mod e dial to [ ]. Press 3 / 4 to sele ct an item, and then press [MENU/SET].

Recording - 82 - Applicable modes: T aki ng Expressive Portraits and Landscape Pictures (A dvanced Scene Mode) Y ou can take high-quality pictures of such subjects as peo ple, scenery , sporting events and activities, people in night scenes and fl owers in accordance with the surrounding conditions.

Recording - 84 - This allows you to t ake pictures of a person and the background with near real-life brightness. ∫ Handhe ld Ni ght Shot This mode allows you to record multiple pict ures of night scenes at high speed, which are combined to make a single picture.
- 85 - Recording Applicable modes: T aki ng Pictures that Match the S cene Being Recorded (Scene Mode) When you select a Scene Mode to m atch the subject and recording situation, the camera sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtai n the desired picture.
Recording - 86 - Y ou can take pictures with connections suitable for creating panorama images. ∫ Sett ing the re c or di ng direction 1 Press 3 / 4 to se lect the recording direction and then press [MENU/SET]. • The horizont al/vertical gui deline will be displayed.
- 87 - Recording This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit atmosphere. ∫ T echnique for Cand le Light Mode • This is more ef fective when taki ng picture s without usin g the flas h. Note • We rec ommend using a tripod and t he Self-timer for takin g pictures.
Recording - 88 - Select this mode when you want to t a ke pictures of a pet such as a dog or a cat. Y ou can set your pet’s birthday and name. For information about [AGE] or [NAME], refer to [BABY1]/[BABY 2] on P87 . Select this when you want to t ak e pictures of sunset view .
- 89 - Recording S till pictures are taken continuously with flash. It is convenient to take continuous still pictures in dark places. ∫ Picture size a nd aspect ratio Select the picture size of 3M (4:3), 2.5M (3:2), 2M (16:9) or 2.5M (1: 1). • S till pictures are taken continuous ly while the shutt er button is pressed fully .
Recording - 90 - When you move the camera to follow a subject moving in one direct ion such as a runner or car , the background bec omes a blur and the s ubject stays focused. This effect is called “panning”. This mode allows you to obt ain this effect easier .
- 91 - Recording This allows you to t ak e vivid pictur es of a starry sky or a dark subject. ∫ Setting the shutter speed Select a shutte r speed of [15 SEC.], [30 SEC.] or [60 SEC.]. • Press the s hut ter button fully to display the c oun tdown screen.
Recording - 92 - This allows you to take even more vivid pictures of the blue color of the sea, sky etc. It also prevents under exposure of pe ople under strong sunlight. Note • Do not touc h the camera with wet han ds. • Problems caus ed by sand, seawater an d fre sh wa te r are not covered by the product warrant y .
- 93 - Recording Pictures are recorded continuously while movi ng the camera horizontally , and two pictures selected automatically are combined to make a single 3D picture. T o view 3D pictures, a television that support s 3D is required (This unit will play back in 2D).
