Chapter 1. Introduction Overview The PN9108U Power over the NET ™ is a control unit that provides remote power management for eig ht AC outlets via a TCP/IP connection, allowing administrators to co.
Features M Remote power on/off/reboot control for eight outlets via TCP/IP and a built in 10/100 Ethernet port M Daisy chain up to 15 ad ditional stations to control up to 128 outlets M Manual switchi.
Optional Capability With the purchase of an optional PA0140 OOBC modu le that plugs into the its RS-232 port, the PN9108U can provide the following: M Out of Band Connectivity - OOB power on/off/reboo.
Requirements M Browsers accessing the PN9108U mu st support SSL 128 bit encryption. M For cold booting of attach ed computers, the computer’s BIOS must support this feature. M For Safe Shutdown: M The computer must be running Windows (Windows 98 or higher).
Chapter 2. Hardware Setup Front View 1. Port LEDs The Port LEDs provide status info rmation about their corresponding AC outlet ports. There is one pair of L ED s for each port.

Installation Before you Begin Stacking The PN9108U can be placed on any ap propriate level surface that can safely support its weight plus th e weight of its attached cab les.
Rack Mounting The PN9108U can be installed in most standard 19" (1U) racks. To rack mount the unit do the following: 1. Separate the front an d rear modules by removing the four module attaching screws: 2.
3. Position the device in the rack and alig n the holes in the mounting brackets with the hole in th e rack . 4. Screw the mountin g brack ets to th e rack .
Single Stage Installation In a Single Stage installatio n, there are no additional PN9108U Stations daisy chained down from the first unit. To s et up a single stage in stallation, refer to the installation diagra m below (the numbers in th e diagram correspond to the numbered steps), and do the following: 1.
3. Plug the LAN or WAN cable in to the PN9108U’s RJ-45 socket. 4. If you choose to use a UPS (optional) plug its cable in to the RS-232 port. Note: The RS-232 port can also be us ed to provide out of band connectivity by connecting a PA 0140 Module to it.
Daisy Chaining To manage even more devices, up to 15 addition al PN9108U Stations can be daisy chained down from th e top level unit. In this way, up to 128 devices can be managed on a complete ins tallation. To set up a daisy chained installation do the following: 1.
Chapter 3. Browser Operation Logging In The PN9108U is accessed with an internet browser. Note: Browsers accessing the PN9108U must support SSL 128 bit encryption. 1. Open your browser and specify the IP address of the PN9108U you want to access in the browser’s URL lo catio n bar .
The PN9108U Main Screen After you have successfully logged in , the PN9108U Main Screen appears: M The icons arranged horizontally across the top are used by the administrator to configure th e PN9108U’s working environment. Administrative functions ar e explained in Chapter 4.
Device Selector Since up to 16 PN9108U S tations can be daisy chained, this pan el lis ts each of th e Statio ns on your installation. The numbe r in brackets, to the right of the title, ind icates the total number of stations on th e installation. The names of the Stations are listed in the list box below the title.
The Power Status Screen The Top Panel Power Buttons: The top panel of the Power Status screen is divided into eight s ubareas which correspond to the A- H outlets on the PN9108U’s rear panel. Each subarea is composed of a so cket icon that functio ns as the Power Button for its corresponding outlet, and an informatio n panel to its right.
The Information Panel: The information panel s hows the Outlet’s name an d currently selected power option. These param eters ar e s et by th e Admin is tr ato r with th e Configuration function (see p.
The Bottom Panel The bottom panel allows you to control the power status of your outlet groups. Outlets can be placed into groups so that Power On/Off actions can be carried out on the en tire outlet group at the same time, rather than performing the same action on each outlet in dividually.
Chapter 4. Administration Working Environment Configuration The icon bar at the top of the main screen is used by the administrator to configure the PN9108U’s working environment. An explanation of each of the co nfig uratio n functio ns is giv en in th e s ectio ns that follow.
System Information: The System Information section allows you to provide a name and description for the PN9108U installation. Providing a name and description is optional, but makes it convenient for system operato rs to distinguish among installation groups in large, installations when there are several groups of daisy chained PN9108Us.
Network Network Settings allows you to choose how th e PN9108U obtains its IP address : Fixed IP Address: The default is for a fixed IP address. To give the PN9108U a fixed IP address, fill in the N etwork Settings and DNS S ettings fields with values appropriate to the network you are on.
Dynamic IP Address: To have the Station obtain its IP address autom atically from a DHCP server, select the DHCP radio button. When you do, the fields in the Network Settings section are disabled, and.
Date / Time The Date / Time function allows you to set the PN9108U’s system date and time. When you click the Date / Time icon, the following dialog box appears: The date and time settings that the PN9108U is currently set to appear in the upper section.
Firmware The Firmware upgrade function allows you to upgr ade the PN9108U’s firmware. When you click the Firmware icon, the following dialog box appears: Details regarding performi ng a firmware upgrade ar e provided in Chapter 6. Logout Click the Logout icon to end your PN9108U session.
Power Management Configuration The buttons in the Device Control panel allow the PN9108U administrator to configure the power management fun ctions of each of the PN9108U Stations on the installation. The functio ns provid ed by each of th e buttons ar e explained in the sections that follow.
The top Configuration pa nel allows you to set up a power management configuration for each port. T hes e s ettin gs deter min e what tak es place when you click the Power Button On or Off.
Heading Meaning Kill the Power If thi s option is selected, the P N9108U waits for the amount time set in the Power Off Delay field (see below), and then turns the Outlet’s power OFF when its Power Button is clicked to turn off the power. Turning the power off performs a cold (non-safe) shutdown.
Outlet Groups: The bottom Configuration panel (refer back to p. 27) lets you select the outlets that you want to put together as an outlet group. Outlet groups enable control actions to be carr ied out on the entire group at the same time, rather than repeatedly per f orming th e sam e action on each in div id ual outlet.
M It is also possible to attach an in div idual UPS for each co m puter to th e PN9108U’s outlet ports. In this case: M Do not enable the PN9108U’s UPS fun ction - since that function only works with a UPS device attached to its RS-232 port. M Configure the UPS devices acco rdin g to th e docu m en tatio n provid ed with each of them.
Schedule Clicking the De vice Control Schedule button brings up th e Scheduling dialog box: This dialog box allows you to set up a scheduled Power On/Off configuration for each of the outlets. To do so: 1. Select your outlet from the bu ttons in the upper panel.
User Management Clicking the De vice Control User Manager button brings up the User Management dialog box: This dialog box allows the Administrato r to set up Usernames and Passwords that operators must provide in order to log into the PN9108U. The minimum number of characters for each field is 4; th e m axim um is 15.
Monitor Clicking the De vice Control Monitor button brings up the Device Mo nito r display: This display shows the power status of your entire installation. You can see at a glance what the to tal curre n t load for each of th e Statio ns on the installation is, as well as th e On/O ff statu s of each outlet.
Log Clicking the De vice Control Log button brings up th e Event Log dialog box: The PN9108U maintains a log file of the last 2048 events that took place on it. This dialog box allows you to select the range of ev ents you wish to view: M Choose Today then click OK to see a listing of only today’s events.
Once you make a choice and click OK an Event Log List, similar to the one below, appears: When you have finished viewing the event list: M If you want to return to th e Event Log dialog box, click Back . M If you want to erase th e contents of the entire log file, click Clear All .
Chapter 5. Safe Shutdown and Reboot Overview The PN9108U’s Safe Shutdown and Reboot functions ar e available for systems running Windows. Safe shutdown and reboot lets you safely close a system down and reboot it without involving the dang er to the file systems that simply killing the pow er supply does.
4. The wording for the System after AC back function may vary somewhat from system to system. For example: M AC Loss Auto Restart M Restore on AC Power Loss In the BIOS settings, choose Power On (Full On) . 5. NT systems must use the System after AC back function.
By default, PMonitor monito rs the COM1 port. If the utility displays an error message stating that it is unable to open the CO M1 port, it m eans that the port is already being us ed by another utility. You can either stop the other utility, an d try again, or us e a different COM port for the PMonitor program.
Manual Setup Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003 can be manually configured for safe shutdown and rebootin g in s tead of us ing th e Power M onitor utility. The following sections explain the procedures involved. Windows 2000 / XP / Server 2003: To set up Windows 2000, XP, or Se rver 2003 for safe shutdown and rebooting, do the following: 1.
2. Click Next . A dialog box similar to the one below appears: Select the options in the dialog box so that they match the s ettings shown in the figure above. 3. Click Finish ; click OK . To check that th e s etu p is workin g: 1. Navigate through the following folders: Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Services.
NT: 1. Go to the Cont rol Panel; open the UPS entry. A dialog box similar to the one below appears: a. For the COM port entr y, select the COM port on the computer that the Safe Shutdown Cable is plugged into. b. Match the other options to the values shown in the figure above.
Chapter 6. Upgrading The Firmware The Firmware Upgrade Utility provide s a smooth, automated process for upgrading the PN9108U’s firmware. Ne w firmware upgrade packages are posted on our web site as they become av ailable. Check the site regularly to find the lates t packages.
Starting the Upgrade 1. From the computer th at you downloaded the upgrade file to, log into the PN9108U. 2. Click the Firmware icon. The Firmware U pgrade dialog box appears: 3. Click the Browse button; navigate to th e upgrade file, and select it. 4.
Appendix IP Address Determination If you are an administrator logging in for the firs t time, you need to access the PN9108U in order to give it an IP address that us ers can connect to. M If your computer is on the same network segment as the PN9108U, you can simply specify the switch’s defa ult IP address (192.
2. Select the device whose ad dress you wish to determi ne in the Device List. M If the list is empty, or your device doesn’t appear, click Enumerate to refresh the Device L i st . M If there is more than one dev ice in th e lis t, use th e MA C ad dres s to pick the one you want.
Method 3: A fixed IP address ca n also be assigned with the ARP c ommand as follows: 1. Turn off the power to the PN9108U. 2. Enter the following comma nd: arp -s <ip address> <PN9108U’s MAC address> Where the IP address that you assign is one suitable for the network segment that the PN9108U resides on.
Troubleshooting Problem 1: On a safe shutdown and reboot operation, when rebooting, the computer stops at the logon screen an d waits for a Username and Password instead of automatically logging on. Solution: The Autologon function hasn’t been configured for the computer.
Problem 2: The computer has an older mainboard that doesn’t support APM in the BIOS. What can I do to get Safe Shutdown and Reboot working? Solution: If you are running Windows 2000, XP , or Server 2003, you can do the following: 1. Open Control Panel → Power Options.
Problem 3: I have enab led Synchronize with NTP Server in the Date / Time dialog box, but I am unable to obtain the date an d tim e from an NT P ser ver on th e internet. Solution: Contact your MIS departme nt and have them en able a port for the NTP server.
Administrator Login Failure If you are unable to perform an Admini strator login (becau se the Username and Password information has become corrupted, or you have forgotten it, for example), you can clear the login informatio n with the following procedure: 1.
