7 INSTALLATION MOUNTING THE PHONE You can place the ET-1118’s ba se on a desk or table, mount it on a standar d wall plate, or mount it directly on a wall.
8 4. Route the adap ter ’s cord t hrough the strain re lief slot on th e bottom of the base. 5. Plug the ada pter into a st andard AC outlet. 6. Lift the ba se’ s antenna to a ve rtical position.
9 5. Plug the m odular cord’s other end into the wall plate jack, then align the brack et’ s keyhole slots with th e wall plate studs and slide th e base downward to secure it.
10 CONNECTING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY PACK The ET-1118 comes with a recharge- able nickel-cadmium batter y pack in the handset but not connecte d. Before using your phone, yo u must connect th e bat- tery pack and then cha rge it fo r about 2 4 hours.
11 • If the ba ttery pack becomes weak during a call, t he handset beeps every 3 seco nds and Lo w Bat- tery flashes. If this happens, you cannot make anothe r call on the phone until you r echarge the batte ry pack. • About once a month, fully discharge the battery pack by keep ing the handset of f the base until Low Battery flashes.
12 At any time except during a call, p ress or to set the handset’s r inger vol- ume. The ph one rings at the selected volume and the display shows Ringer Low or Ringer High . To set the ba se’s ring er volume, set RING VOL on the back of the base to OFF , LO , or HI .
13 3. Press SELECT to change th e Caller ID/Call W aiting setting. On or Off appears indi cating the select ed set- ting. 4. Press CALL ID or return the handset to the base to store th e new setting.
14 T ELEPHONE OPERATION MAKING AND RECEIVING CALLS WITH THE HANDSET To make a call, lift the handset, then press TA L K . Th e IN USE indicator on the base lights. D ial the number. You see the numbe r as you di al, then (ab out 5 seconds later) the call’s elapsed time.
15 To switch to the handset while you are using the speakerpho ne, simply lift the handset off the base. If t he handset is away from the base, press TA L K , then press SPEAKER . USING BOTH THE HANDSET AND SPEAKERPHONE If someone el se is using the speaker- phone, press TA L K on the handse t to join the conversation .
16 • The redial m emory for ea ch keypad is separate. Y ou cannot redial a number you dialed on the handset’ s keypad using REDIAL on the base’s keypad, and vice versa. • The redi al memory h olds up t o 32 digits, so you ca n redial long-dis- tance as well as local numbers.
17 To page the ba se from th e handset, press INTCM . Paging Base appears, and the base and hand set ring. Press SPEAKER or INTERCOM on the base to answer t he page. Intercom appears on the handset’s display. To page the ha ndset from the base, press IN TERCOM .
18 Use the supplied memory directory stickers to r ecord your st ored number s. Peel the backing f rom each sticker an d attach them to the pho ne as shown. Storing a Number in the Handset’ s Memory Each number stored in t he handset’s memory can be up to 20 digi ts, and each name can be up to 14 charact ers.
19 7. Press SELECT . The phone beeps and Memory n Stored appears. After 2 seconds, Memory Store appears, and you can repeat Steps 3–6 to stor e more nu mbers. To replace a stored number, simply store a new one in its place. Editing or Deleting a Number in the Handset’ s Memory 1.
20 Entering a Pause In some telephon e systems, you must dial an access code (9, for exampl e) and wait for a second dial ton e before you can dial an outside number . You can store the a ccess code with the phon e number. However, you should also store a pause af ter the acce ss code to allo w the outside line time to co nnect.
21 T esting Stored Emergency Numbers If you store an emergency service’s number (police depa rtment, fire depar t- ment, ambulance) and you choose t o test the stored n umber, make the test call during th e late evenin g or early morning hours t o avoid peak deman d periods.
22 CALLER ID OPERATION If you subscribe to Caller ID service from your phon e compan y, the phone com pa- ny sends information about the call, as well as the time and date, betw een the first and second rings of every call yo u receive.
23 Caller ID Messages DIALING NUMBERS FROM A CALLER ID RECORD To dial a local number stored in a Caller ID record, r ecall the record , then pres s TA L K . If it is a long distance call, press 1 ( 1 appears befor e the displayed num- ber) before pr essing TA L K .
24 If a record exists in the s elected loca- tion, Replace Memory? appe ars, prompting you to confirm the re place- ment. Move the cursor to Ye s or No , then press SELECT . DELETING CALLER ID RECORDS You can delete Caller ID recor ds individ- ually or all at once.
25 T ROUBLESHOOTING We do not expect you to have an y problems with your p hone, but if you do, the follo w- ing suggestions might he lp. Problem Suggestion The phone does not work or wor ks poo rly . Be sure the base’ s phone line cord and A C adapter are correctly and securely con- nected.
26 If you still have problems, disconnect the ET-1118. If other phones on the same line work properly, t he fault is in t his phone or its installation. If you cannot fin d the prob- lem, take your ET-1118 to your local RadioShack st ore for assistance.

28 REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK If you follow the instructions in “Connect- ing and Charging the Bat tery Pack” on Page 10, the b attery pack should last about one yea r. If the battery pa ck does not hold a char ge for more than 2 hours after an overnight ch arge, replace it with a new 3.
