5 Preparation ˆ Preparation CONNECTING POWER You can power your recorder from internal battery power, AC power (with an o ptional AC adapter), or your vehicle’s battery (with an optional DC adapter). Using Batteries You can use two AAA batteri es (not sup- plied) to power your recorder.
6 Preparation • If you do not plan to use the recorder with batteries for several days or more, remove the batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic parts. When the REC/BA TT in dicator does not light, lights dimly duri ng manual recording, or the recorder stops operating pro perly, replace the batteries.
7 Preparation an AC or DC adapter and an Adapta plug (neither supplied, available at your local RadioShack store). Cautions: Y ou must use a (C lass 2 for AC) power source that sup- plies 3 volts DC power an d delivers at least 200 mA.

10 Operation ˆ Operation Although the recorder’s auto shut-off fea- ture stops the recorder’s tap e drive motor when the tape reaches the end, the re- corder continues to use power, and its tape-handling parts contin ue to touch the tape until you press STOP/EJECT .
11 Operation 3. Insert the microcassett e into the door ’s guides so the microcassette’s open edge faces out. Note: The arrow on the casse tte compartment door indicates tape travel direction. Be sure the ta pe’s full reel is in the opposite directio n of the arrow .
12 Operation 2. Set SP EED on the side of the recorder as follows: • T o double the tape’s recording/ playback time, set SPEED to 1.2 . This setting allows 120 minutes total recordi ng/pla yback time on an MC-60 tape, or 180 minutes on an MC-90 tape.
13 Operation I f the function switch i s s e t t o OFF , recording begins immediately . If the function switch i s set t o VOX IN , recording begins and th e REC/BA TT indicator lights steadily only when th e recorder picks up sound. Cautions: • Do not force down RECORD .
14 Operation Using an External Microphone You can use an external microphone to make high-quality recordings. Plug a mi- crophone with a 3 / 32 -inch plug into the re- corder’s MIC jack. Note: You can use a u nidirectional micro- phone with your recorder (no t supplied, available at your local RadioShack sto re).
15 Operation Using F AST-F and REWIND Press REWIND to rapidly rewind (review) a tape. Press FA S T - F to fast-forward (cue) a tape. If you press FA S T - F or REWIND during playback, you can hear the tape at a fast- er speed as it cues or reviews. If you re- lease FA S T - F or REWIND , the recorder resumes normal playback.
16 Tape Tips records, note th e counter readin g at the position(s) where you want to return. ˆ T ape Tips STORING CASSETTE T APES Do not expose cassette ta pes to high tem- peratures, high hu midity, dust or dirt, or motors, transformers, or other sources with strong magnetic fields.
17 Care ERASING A CASSETTE T APE If you no longe r want a recording, you can record over it or erase it. To record over a cassette tape, be sure the erase-protectio n tabs are in place. Then simply record as usual. The recorder records over the previous recording.
18 Care dure after every 20 hours of record er operation. 1. Press STOP/E JECT , remove the bat- teries, and disconnect any power source. 2. Press PLA Y to expose the tape-han- dling parts. 3. Use a cotton swab dipped in tap e head cleaning so lution or denatured alcohol to gently clean the ta pe-han- dling parts.
