5 IN STALLATI ON SELECTI NG A LOCATION You can set the T AD-285 on a flat sur- face (such as a des ktop or counter- top), or m ount it on a wall plate or directly on the wall. Select a location that is: • Near an AC out let • Near a m o dular telepho ne line jack If the phone l ine jack i s not a modul ar jack, you must updat e the wir i ng.
6 CONNECTING POWER Use the supplied AC ad apt er to pow er your an swering s ystem. Cautio n s: • Y ou must use an AC ada pter that supplies 9 volts of power , delivers at least 500 millia mps, and has a plug that properly f its the T AD- 285’s POWER SOURCE jack.
7 Follow these step s to record the out- going m essage. 1. Rotate VO LU ME to wa rd HI until it cli cks. The red li gh t t urns on. 2. Lift open t he c assette compart- ment door . 3. Press and h old OGM REC/PLA Y until the red l igh t t urns off, then release the button.
8 PLACING THE PHONE ON A DESKTOP To use your a nswering system o n a desk, table, or s h elf, plug one end of the suppl ied telephone cord i nto PHONE JACK and plug the other end into a modul ar phone jack, then pro- ceed to “Conne cting the Handset” on Page 10.
9 5. Plug the expos ed end of the cord into a modular phone jack wall plate. 6. Line up t he keyhole slots on the bracket with the studs on the wall plate, then slide the bracket down onto the wall plate until it is secure. 7. Pull the h andset holder toward you as far as it will go.
10 4. A lign t h e adapter ’ s power cord with the left slot on the top and bottom of the mount ing bracket. Align the modular cord wi th t he right slot on the t op and bottom of the mount ing brack et. 5. Insert the mount ing bracket’s tabs into the slots on the bottom of the answering system.
11 SETTI NG THE R INGER SWITCH To set t he volum e of the telephone’ s ringer, set the ringer switc h on the back of t he answering system to LO or HI . To turn off the telephone’s ringer, set t he ri nger s wit ch t o OF F . You can still make out -going calls.
12 ANSWE RIN G SY ST EM OP ERAT I ON SETTI NG THE ANSWERING SYSTEM TO ANSWER CALL S Rotate VOLUME to ward HI until it cli cks. When th e red li ght on t he PLA Y button stays o n without the answering system sound ing a tone, the system is ready to answer calls.
13 SETTI NG THE SYSTE M’ S VO L U M E Adju st the an swering syst em’s VOL- UME t o a comf ortable level. ( This does not affect t he vo lume of the message the caller he ars.) SCREENING CALLS To scr e en calls, l et the answerin g sys- tem answer them .
14 The answering s ys tem beeps once and the red light turns off. The tape fast-forwards to the end of all the mes - sages and resets to answe r c alls. The system beeps twice and the red li ght blinks again. To replay the m essages, sim ply press PLA Y again.
15 T ELE PHONE O P ERATION You can m ake and answer calls w ith this telephone as you wou ld with any other pho ne. Read this section to learn about special features. Note: When you receive a call, t he telephon e rings and t he lighted ring er bar flashes.
16 MEMORY DIALI NG Your an swering syst em has two ty pes of memory — priority and standard — that let you store and eas ily dial up to 13 numbers. You can st ore up to 3 numbers in p r i- ority memory and dial them with the press of a s i ngle button.
17 REMOTE CONTROL OP ERATI ON While you are away from your h ome or office, you can use a touch-tone phone or a pu lse phone wit h a pocket ton e d ia ler to : • Set the answering syst e m to answer.
18 ERASING THE MESSAGES If you w ant to erase th e messages af - ter playback, enter the remote opera- tion security code within 8 seconds after the four sho rt beeps at the end of all the messages. Af ter the answering system beeps , hang up the phone.
19 T ROUBLES HOOTING We do not expect you t o have any pro b lems with you r answeri ng system , b ut if you do, be sure you i nstalled the tape correctly and tu r n ed on the system. If y ou still have a probl em, t his ch art mi ght help . If not , t ake t he a nswering syst em t o your lo- cal RadioShack store for assistance.
20 Recordings sound distorted. Y ou were too close to the m icrophone or you spoke too lo udly w hen you recorded the outgo- ing m essage. Rereco r d the message . Spea k clearly into the micropho ne at a norm al vo l- ume fro m about 12 inches awa y .
21 Continuou s tone sounds. No outgoing message recorded. Re cord an out going m es- sage (see “Recording the Outg oing M essage” on Page 6). The cassette tape is jammed or broken . Unplug the adapter from the AC ou t let , re pl ac e t h e t ap e, then plu g the adapter back into the AC outlet.

23 CLEANING THE T APE- HANDLING PARTS Inspect and clean the tape head ab out every 3 m onths . Dirt, dust, or p articles of the tape's coating ca n accumulate on the tape heads and other parts that the tape touches. This can greatly re- duce the p erformance o f the casset te player.
