12 Safety Safety belts Three-poi nt inertia-reel safety belts are pro - vided fo r all seats. Researc h has es tablished that it is danger- ous for rea r-seat passengers not to wear their safe ty belts.
13 Safety Safety- belt pretensi oners The belts of the front se ats are fitted with automati c pretensioners , which are a cti- vate d in the eve nt of a sever e fron tal co lli- sion or v ery viole nt rear-end collis ion. They serve to reduce th e forward moveme nt of the body by tensioning the belt.
14 Safety • Children who ha ve g rown out of a child seat sh ould be rest rained b y the car’ s standard three-point belt s. Mak e sure that the shoul der belt is not in contact w ith the nec k or thro at. If it is, a boos ter seat/cush- ion ma y be necessa r y .
15 Safety Belt guide The bel t guide on the door pilla r can be set to five different heights . Set the guide as high as poss ible without causin g the belt to chafe agains t the throat.
16 Safety Safety belt s, rear seat Three-poi nt safety belts a re provided for all three rear-s eat passengers (2 for Conv ert- ible model ). Fasten the bel ts by pulling the belt acro ss you and inse rting the tongue into the buc kle. Check t hat it is secur ely fast ened .
17 Safety WARNING Safety be lts are design ed to bear upon the bony s tructure of the body, and should be worn low acro ss the fr ont of the pe lvis or the pelvis , chest and sh oulders, as applic able; wearing the lap se ction of the belt acros s the abdom inal area must be avoide d.
18 Safety Head res traint The f ront seats i n the S aab 9- 3 are equippe d with Saab Ac tive Head Restraints (SAHRs). These red uce the risk of whip lash injur y if the c ar is hit from b ehind. In the eve nt of a rear-end col l ision, th e body is force d back again st the bac krest.
19 Safety Child safe ty Car safety tip s Protect your chil dren fr om getting trapped in the tr unk of a car WARNING • Child ren must always be suitabl y restraine d in the car . All chil d restraint s and boost er seats are designe d to be sec ured in vehi cle seats by the lap belt or the lap belt of a lap-sho ulder belt.

21 Safety LATCH LATCH (Lo w er An chorag es & Top te thers for CHildre n) consist s of two types of attach- ments f or child rest raints in the rea r set, ISOFIX and top tether. ISOFIX are lower attac hments located where t he seat and back cushi ons com e together.

23 Safety Child tether anchorages, Coupé and 5-door models Child res traints with a teth er strap must be anchored according to law. The belt anchora ge beam is provided with three top te ther anchorag es. Use the one that is lo cated just be hind the child restraint and attach the restrain t as follo ws: 1 Open the luggage compa r tment.

25 Safety Installation of child rest raint using the stand ard safety belt Child restrai nt that are approv ed for rear- war d faci ng ins talla tion in the rear seat can be pos itioned in a ny of the th ree rear pl aces. If the ch ild restraint is positioned in the center pla ce, the child rest raint support legs should be us ed.
26 Safety Integrated booster seat (access ory) Integr ated boos ter seats are av ailable as part of th e rear seat back rest. This ch ild restraint is desi gned for use by children who weig h between 33 and 80 lbs . (15 and 3 6 kg) and are be tween 38 and 5 4 inches (970 and 137 0 mm) in height.

28 Safety Airbag (Supplemental Restraint Syst em "SRS") The suppl ementary restrai nt system (SRS) compr ises a n airbag in the st eering wheel , a front passen ger airbag and side airbags in the front seats. The sys tem sup plements the pr otection provided by the s a fety belts to further enhance the safety of occup ants.
29 Safety WARNING • Even i f the car i s equipped w ith an SRS (airbag ), safety belts mu st still always be wor n by al l occ upa nts. • Note tha t because an a irbag inflates and defla tes extremely rapidly, it wi ll not pro vide prote ction against a sec ond im pact o ccurri ng in th e sa me incident .
30 Safety Front p assenger se at The airbags are interconnecte d and have a common w a rnin g light, AIR BAG. The pas- senger a irbag module is housed in the fascia a bove the glo ve compa rtment and is marked ”SRS AIR BAG”.
31 Safety Side airbag s are house d inside the back- rests o f the fr ont seats and ar e designed t o protect the driver and front passenger in th e event of a side impact.

33 Safety Frequently asked questio ns on func- tion of the ai rbag Do you still need to wear a safety belt if air- bags are fitted? Yes, alway s! The ai rbag merely su pple- ments t he car’s normal safety syste m.
34 Safety Are the smok e and fumes given of f when the airbag op erates at all harmful? Most pe ople who hav e remained in a car with li ttle or no ve ntilat ion for several min- utes co mplained only of minor irri tation of the throat and eyes. Avo id as muc h as pos- sible g etting dust on y our skin as there is a risk of skin irritati on.

36 Security Doors Opening handle Open th e door by lifting the open ing handle from below . If the do or is stuck (e.g. i f frozen), hold th e handle f rom above to secure a better grip. Central lock ing Key The key unit cons ists of a mec hanical ke y with int egrated r emote control.

38 Security Locking by key (1) Turn the key cl ockwise: all do ors and trunk lid loc k ed. The trunk lid cannot be opened now fro m inside us ing the switch on the driver’s doo r. Unlockin g by key (2 ) Turn the k ey counterclo ckwise o nce: the driver´s doo r unlock ed.
39 Securit y Changing t he key ba ttery When the battery voltage in the key falls below a predetermined level the SID wi ll issue the fol lowing message: REPLA C E KEY BATTERY. Press the CLEAR bu tton on the SID to ack nowledge this m essage. You mus t then repl ace the battery without delay to avoid malfun ctions.
40 Security Trunk lock The trunk does not unloc k when the o ther doors are unloc k ed. The trunk button on the driver’s door is inopera tive when the car is locked or moving at a speed greate r than 2.7 mph ( 4 km/h). To unlock The trunk is unloc ked using: • The butto n on the k ey .
41 Securit y Car alarm The ca r alar m (an ti-t heft sy stem ) is act i- vated/de activated wh en the car is locked /unlocked b y the key (re mote or by the key in the driver´s doo r. All the d oors plus trunk lid and hood a re monitore d by microswitc hes, and win- dow-gla ss sensors will trigg er the alarm if any gla ss is brok en.
42 Security Activat ing the car al arm The car a larm cannot be activated if th e driver’s door is open or if the ignition switch is in po siti on ON.
43 Securit y Alarm signals When the car alarm is a rmed, it wi ll be t rig- gered if any door, the trunk lid or hood, is opened, or if a window is brok en. The alar m will al so be trig gered if an attemp t is mad e to bypass or short-circuit the igni- tion swit ch, or to disco nnect the battery .

56 Converti ble Trunk, 9-3 Convertible Hooking up top stor age bag More spac e in the trun k can be obtain ed by lifting t he top storage bag up by the straps under it and ho oking them in the eyelets at the top o f the bag. The top st orage bag can only be hoo ked up in this way when the top i s raised.
57 Conver tible Trunk Pass- Through in the rear seatback for long, narrow loads A trunk pa ss-through is pro v ided in the rear seat back s upport so tha t long narr ow objects can be carried . Before using this trunk pa ss-through, t he rear seatbac k must be low ered.

Un der norm al co nditi ons, these shou ld go ou t a few se conds af ter the engine has started .
61 Instruments and controls Warning charging This lig ht comes on toge ther with if the batter y is not charging. If it c omes on while you are drivi ng, stop the car as soon as pos - sible a nd switch off the engine. Check th e alternator drive belt (see page 203).

65 Instruments and controls Traction Control System indicator (option) The T CS lamp in the t achom eter light s up when th e TCS s ystem is activa ted, i.e. when the frict ion between the ti res and road surface is insu fficient for the car to acceler- ate a s desired .
66 Instru ment s and contr ols Instru ments Tachometer The tacho meter indicates th e engine speed in thousa nds of revoluti ons per mi nute. The needle ma y be allowed to enter the broken red zone on the dial onl y for an ins tant. A safety cu t-out function (in the fu el system) prevents the engine speed ex ceeding approxim ately 6, 200 rpm (2.
67 Instruments and controls Temperatu re gauge The tempera ture gauge shows the tempe r- ature of the coo lant. The needl e should be in the m iddle of the scale w hen t he engine is at no rmal operatin g tempera ture. If the need le enters the re d zone, the warning light will com e on and an alarm chime wi ll sound.

77 Instruments and controls Back-Up The back-up ligh ts come on automa tically when re verse gear is e ngaged or se lected with the i gnition switche d on. Rear fog light Press the button to switc h on the rear fog light, whic h will only co me on if the head- lights or front fog lights are on.

79 Instruments and controls Rear-window wiper Rear-windo w washin g and wiping are ca r- ried out us ing the same stalk switch as for washing and wiping t he windshi eld and headlight s. This stal k has two ad ditional swit ches, ON/ OFF and . The ON position gives intermittent w iping.

83 Instruments and controls The butto n is located o n the cli m ate-cont rol panel. An L ED in the butt on is lit a s long as heating is on. Switch off the heating as so on as the rear window is cl ear. It w ill go off automati c ally after abou t 10 minutes.

The sun s ensor is centra lly locate d on the dashboard panel between the defro s ter nozzles .

89 Instruments and controls Starting in cold weather: The automatic clim ate c ontr ol sys tem selec ts th e def rost er positio n, max. heating a nd low fan speed to begin w ith. As the en gine temperature rises, the fan speed is increa sed and air is routed to wards the floor.
