12 Safety Safety belts Three-poi nt inertia-reel safety belts are pro- vided fo r all seats. Researc h has es tablished th at it is danger- ous for rea r-seat passenge rs not to wear their safe ty belts. Bear in mi nd that in c ertain sta tes it is a legal requiremen t for all occup ants of the car t o wear a safety bel t.
13 Safety Safety- belt pretensi oners The belts of the front seats are fitted with automati c pretensio ners, which ar e acti- vate d in the eve nt of a sev ere fr ontal coll i- sion or v ery violent rear-en d collision. Th ey serve to reduce the forward movement of the body by tensioning the belt.
14 Safety • Children w ho ha ve grown ou t of a child seat sh ould be rest rained by the car’ s standard three-point belt s. Make sure that the shoul der belt is not in conta c t with the nec k or throat. If it is, a booster seat/cu sh- ion ma y be necessa r y .
15 Safety Belt heig ht adj ustmen t The front safety belts and the out side belts in the re ar (9-5 Sedan) ar e equipped with automati c height adjustm ent. After faste ning the bel t, grasp it at chest height, p ull it out and, without letting go, allow the slack t o be take n up by the reel.
16 Safety Safety b elt, rear se at Three-poi nt safety belts a re provided for a l l three rear-sea t passen gers. Fasten the belt by pul ling out the strap care - fully an d inserting the tongue in th e lock.
17 Safety WARNING Safety be lts are design ed to bear upo n the bony s tructure of the body , and should be worn low across the fr ont of the pelvis or the pelvis, ches t and sh oulders, as applic able; wearing the lap portion o f the belt acros s the abdom inal area must be avoide d.
18 Safety Head res traint The f ront seat s in th e Saab 9-5 ar e equippe d with Saab Ac tive Head Re straints (SAHRs). These red uce the risk of whip lash injur y if th e car is hit from behi nd. In the eve nt of a rear-end col lision, the body is force d back again st the backr est.
19 Safety Child safe ty Car safety tip s Protect your children from getting trapped in the tr unk of a car WARNING • Child ren must always be s uitably restraine d in the car . All child restraint s and boost er seats are designe d to be sec ured in vehi cle seats by the lap belt or the lap belt of a lap-sho ulder belt.
20 Safety The sam e attention mus t be given t o child safety i n the car as is given t o adults. Saab reco mmends rea rward fac ing child restraints . Childre n travel mo st safely whe n properly restraine d, but restraints must be suitable for the s ize of the chil d.
21 Safety When fitting chil d seat s in cars you mu st always read the instruc tions supplied by the car sea t manufacturer. Saab 9-5 Wag on: Chi ld r estr ain t that are ap pr oved for r ear- ward faci ng installat i on in the rear seat ca n be positio ned in any of the thre e rear places.
22 Safety Child teth er anchor ages for forw ard facing chil d car seat s Child res traints with a teth er strap must be anchored according to Canadian la w. If you h ave any que stions regard ing child tether anchorages ple ase contact y our Saab deal er.
23 Safety 9-5 Wagon: 1 Fold the bac k rest of the rear seat f or- ward , see page 137. 2 Fold the anchor that is right behi nd the child re straint to i ts upright posi tion. 3 Place the chi ld restraint in the rear seat. 4 Raise the he ad restrain t to its upper position and then route th e tether under the headr estrain t.
24 Safety Integr ated boos ter seat (access ory) The integ rated booste r seat in the back is intended for children weighing 33-8 0 lbs. (15-36 kg) and betwe en 38 and 54 inche s (97 and 1 37 c m) ta ll. When se ated in the i ntegrated boos ter seat, the chi ld must wear the standard three-point safety bel t.
25 Safety WARNING • The standa rd safety belt must alway s be used in conjunctio n with the inte- grated booster seat. • The seat must n ot be mo difi ed in an y way. • Never leave a child unatte nded. • Check to ensure that the belt is not twisted o r rubbing aga inst any sharp edge s.
26 Safety Airbag (Supplemental Restraint Syst em "SRS") The suppl ementary restrai nt system (SRS) compr ises a n airbag in the steeri ng wh eel, a front passen ger airbag and side airbags in the front seats. The sys tem suppleme nts the protec tion provided by the safety be lts to further enhance the safety of the occupant s.
27 Safety IB417 Moment of im pact. Sensor de tects decel- eration and sends a signal via the control module to a gas gen- erator that inflates the airbag. The inflating airbag cushions the dr iver . Airbag now fully inflated. The airbag star ts to deflate.
28 Safety Front p assenger se at The airbags are interconnecte d and have a common w a rnin g light. Th e passenger airbag m odule is ho used in the fas cia above the g love compar tmen t and i s mar ked ”SRS AIRBAG”.
29 Safety WARNING • This car is eq uipped with side airb ags and no extra interior trim should be fit- ted. Fail ure to observ e this warning could resu lt in the side airbags not inflatin g as intended an d thus not pro- viding the intended pro tection eith er.
30 Safety AIR BAG warning light SRS s ervici ng The SRS must be inspecte d as part of the normal s ervice prog ram but otherwi se may be regarded as ma intenance-fre e.
31 Safety How do I p osit ion t he s eat to le ave r oom f or the airba g to inflate? Don’ t have your s eat too fa r forw ard. Recli ne the seat back to inc rease the dis- tance be tween you an d the airbag. For short driver s, spe cial acc essory pedal extensions are avai lable through y our Saab deale r.
32 Safety What sho uld I do if the AI R-BAG warning light comes on? If the war ning light is o n, it means tha t a faul t has bee n detected i n the system. The airbag cann ot be relied on to operate as intended and it migh t even be acti vated erroneous ly.

34 Security Doors Door handles Pull the handl e to open th e door. If the do or is stuck (e.g . if froze n), hold the handle f rom above to secure a be tter grip. Central lock ing Key / Remote c ontrol The key uni t consis ts of a mechanic al key with int egrated remote c ontrol.
35 Securit y To chec k the numbe r of keys th at are p ro- grammed fo r the car; see pa ge 45. Electron ic starti ng interlo ck (immobilizer) Each t ime the key i s remo ved from the ig ni- tion, the elec tronic starting inte rlock is acti- vated an d the car is thus immo bilized, se e also pa ge 42.
36 Security Locking by key (1) When the car is lock ed and unlo cked the theft alar m is also affected. Turn the ke y clockw ise: all do ors lo cked . The trunk lid/tailgate cannot be open ed now from ins ide using t he switch on the driver’s door. Unlockin g by key (2) Turn the k ey counterclo ckwise once: th e driver´s door will unlo ck.
37 Securit y Changing t he key ba ttery When the battery volt age in the key falls below a predetermined level the SID w ill issue the fol lowing message: ”REPL AC E KEY BATTERY”. Press the CLEAR button on the SID to acknowled ge this messa ge. You mus t then replace th e battery witho ut delay to avoid malfun ctions.
38 Security Trunk lid lock, 9-5 Seda n The trunk lid lock is independ ent of the cen - tral-lock ing system. The trunk lid rel ease switch o n the driver’s door is inope rative when th e car is locked from the outs ide or moving at a speed grea ter than 2.
39 Securit y Tailgate, 9-5 Wagon The tailg ate is not unl ocked when th e other car doors are unlocked. Th e tailgate bu tton on the dri ver’s door is inoperative wh en the car is l ocked or movi ng at a speed g reater than 4 km/h.
40 Security Safety l ock The tail gate has a s afety lock which is acti- vated with a button to the righ t of the tailgate lock. When the bu tton is moved to the left, the ta il- gate can only be op ened from the outside, assumi ng that the locking bu tton (LOCK) by the insi de opening handle has not been push ed in.
41 Securit y Car alarm The ca r alar m (a nti- thef t syst em) is acti - vated/de activated wh en the car is locked /unlocked by the rem ote control or by the key , see page 35.
42 Security Activat ing the car al arm The car a larm cannot be activated i f the driver’s door is open or if the igniti on switch i s i n O N p os i ti o n .
43 Securit y Alarm signals When the car alarm is armed, it wi ll be trig- gered if an y door, or the tr unk lid or hood, is opened o r if a wind ow is broken. The alar m will also be trig gered if an attemp t is mad e to bypass or short-circuit the igni- tion swit ch, or to disco nnect the battery .

48 Instru ments and contr ols Indicator and warning lights A number of indicator and warn ing lights wi ll come on whe n the igniti on is switched on prior to s tarting. Under norm al conditions , these sh ould go out a fe w seconds after the engine h as started (see page 54).
49 Instruments and controls Warning, charging This ligh t will come on togeth er with if the batte ry is discharg ing. If it comes o n whil e you ar e dri vin g, sto p the c ar as soon as poss ible and sw itch off the engi ne. Check th e alternator drive belt (see pa ge 202).
50 Instru ments and contr ols Anti-lock b rake w arning This light will come on if a fault ha s occurred in the ABS system. On certa in variants and as well as can ligh t up to indicat e a faul t in the electron ic brake force d istribution sy stem (distr ibution of the brake pr essure bet ween the front and rear wheels).
51 Instruments and controls CHECK message in dicator This li ght indica tes that ther e is a message in the SID . A chime wi ll also sound (see page 61). Central warning light This li ght will com e on and a c hime wi ll sound i f a fault has been detected in any system th at is critical to safety.

Indicator, high beam This li ght shows wh en the headl ights are on high beam (se e page 63). Indicator, rear fog light This lig ht shows when the re ar fog light is on (see page 64).
53 Instruments and controls Automatic transmi ssion, fault indicator On a c a r with a n auto matic tran smission, this w arning symbol is illumin ated if a fault has bee n detected i n the trans missio n. Switch the ignition off and on ag ain to chec k if the fa ult persists.
54 Instru ments and contr ols Autocheck ing of lights, main instrument panel The abov e warning and indicator ligh ts should come on w hen the i gnition is switched on prior to s tarting.
55 Instruments and controls Speedom eter (U.S . spe edomet er shown) The speed ometer receiv es signals from th e wheel sensors in the ABS system. If the NIGHT PANEL mode has been selecte d, the scale will be ill uminated up to 87 mph (14 0 km/h). The re mainder of the scale wi ll be illum inated if the speed of the car exceed s 84 mph (135 km/h).

65 Instruments and controls Instrument illumination The br ightness of the instrument illumina- tion can be varied b y means of the dimm er switc h adjacent t o the headlig ht switch. (Se e als o Nigh t pane l on page 61 ). In dayli ght or other e qually bright l ight, the instr ument and swi tch illuminat ion is auto- matical ly extingu ished.
66 Instru ments and contr ols Front fog lights The front f og lights ca n be activ ated in both dimmed headlight a nd parking l ight posi- tions. F og lights s hould on ly be used in poor visibi lity cond itions. Make sure you are familiar with the a ppli- cable provi ncial/state law reg arding the use of fog lights.
67 Instruments and controls Interior lighting The inter ior lighting consists of on e dome ligh t in t he fr ont an d one i n the back, a map-read ing light in the front, t wo reading light s in the bac k, floor courte sy lights in the front (in s ome model va riants) and door courtesy lights on all doors.
68 Instru ments and contr ols Wipers and was hers There are three intermi ttent wiper po sitions. Moving the control stalk to the spring-l oaded position bet ween 0 and 2 will produce a sin gle sweep of the wipers. The wi pers are designe d for optima l clean- ing at all driv ing speeds .

72 Instru ments and contr ols Temperature control The cabin is divide d into two tem perature zones : • The driver’ s zon e. • The passeng er zone (front and rear seats) . The desire d temperature can be set between 58 and 82°F (15 a nd 27°C).

76 Instru ments and contr ols Starting in co ld weather To start wi th, the system will automatic a lly sel ect the defroste r set- ting, ma ximum hea t and low fa n speed. As the en gine warms up , air will also be distributed t hrough the floor vents a nd the fan sp eed will be i ncreased .
77 Instruments and controls Programming II It is al so possible to customize th e ACC system, e.g. to adapt to driving and weather co nditions.
