Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section helps you to quickly start using your device. Understanding T his User Manual The sections of this manual generally follo w the features of your device. A robust index for features begins on page 129.
5 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed information about how to use your device. T o make this possible, the follow ing text conventions are used to re present ofte n-used steps: Bat ter y Y our device is powered by a re chargeable, standard Li-Ion battery .
Getting Started 6 Charging the Batter y Y our device comes with a W all/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) to charge your device from any standard AC power outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before usin g your device for the first time.
7 Note: If the batter y is completely discharged, you cannot turn on the device, even with the USB po wer adapter connected. Allow a depl eted battery to charge for a few minutes before you tr y to turn on the device. T ur ning Y our Device On and Off T urning Y our De vice On Press and hold the Pow er /Lo ck Key .
Getting Started 8 Memor y Car d Y our device supports removable microSD or micr oSDHC memory cards with ma ximum capacities of 64 GB (depending on the memory ca rd manufacturer and type). Memory cards are used to s tore music, photos, videos, and other files.

11 F r ont and Sides The following items can be found on the front and sides of your device. 1. Front-Facing Camera Len s : T akes photos or records videos. 2. Speaker : Plays music, notification tones, and audio. 3. Back Key : Retur n to the previous screen or option.

Infrared Blaster : Controls other devices. 3. Memory Card S lot : Install a memory card for storage of files (not included).
13 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using your device. It consists of: • Status Bar : The Status Bar displays notifications on the left side and status indicat ors on the right side. Note: The Status Bar is so metimes hidden. T o displa y it, touch and dra g the top of the screen do wn.
Understanding Y our Device 14 Extended Home Screen The Home screen consists of the Home pane l, plus panels that extend beyond the display width to provide more space for adding shortcuts, widgets and folders. Slide your finger horizontally across the scr een to scroll to the left or right side panels.

Understanding Y our Device 16 Using the T ouch Screen Use only your fingers or a stylus with the touch screen. Caution! Do not allow the touch s creen to come into contact with other electrical device s. Electro static discharges can cause the touch screen to malfunction.
17 Control Motions Simple motions allow easy control of the device. Before using motions, make sure the motion fe ature is activated. 1. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Controls tab ➔ Pal m Motion . 2. T ouch to turn the feature ON. Note: Excessive shaking or impact to the device may result in unintended input s.

Activate Multi window (see “Activate Multi Windo w” on page 19). 2. Swipe the righ t edge of the screen toward the center to display t he Multi wind o w pa nel.
21 Configuring Apps T o remove an app from the panel: T ouch and drag it off of the panel and place it in the storage area. T o add an app to the panel: T ouch and drag it from the stora ge area to the panel. T o relocate an app: T ouch and drag it to a new location.
Understanding Y our Device 22 Accessing Additional Panel Functions In addition to n otifications, the Not ification Panel also provides quick and ready access to se parate device functions. These can be quickly activated or deactivated by toggling them on or off.
23 Status Bar The Status Bar at the top of the home screen provides device information (s uch as network status, battery char ge, and time) on the right side and noti fication aler ts on the left. T o display the Status Bar: From a Home screen, swipe downward from the top of the screen.

25 Fo ld e r s Place folders on the Home screen to organize items. Adding Fo lders 1. From a Home screen, touch and hold on an empty area of the screen until th e Home screen pop-u p appears . 2. T ouch Folder . 3. Enter a name for the fol der and touch OK .
Understanding Y our Device 26 Apps Scr een The Apps screen displays all applica tions installed on your tablet. Applicatio ns that you download and install from Google Play or from the web are al so added to a Home screen. The Apps icons can be arranged in various ways.
27 T ask Manager Y our device can run applicat ions simultaneously and some applications run in the background. Use T ask Manag er to see which applica tions are running on your device and to end running applications t o extend battery life. Y ou can also uninstall ap plications from your device and see how much m emory is used by applica tions.
Understanding Y our Device 28 Entering T e xt Use the Samsung keyboard or the voice input feature to enter text. Note: T ext entry is not supported in some languages. T o enter text, you must change the i nput language to one of the supported languages.
29 Using Samsung K eyboar d The Samsung keyboard is a cust om virtual QWERTY keyboard, featuring optiona l predictive text. Input characters by tapping the onscreen keys wi th your finger , or use speech recognition. Y ou can enable predictive text, to have the Samsung keyboard match your key touches to common w ords and displays them.
Understanding Y our Device 30 Handwriting T ouch and hold Options ➔ Handwriting , and then write a word with a finger . As you write, suggestions are offered in the word options area in cas e the correct letters were not reco gnized. T ouch to select a sugges ted word.
31 Using Google V oice Typing Use your voice to enter text using the Google V oice typing feature. 1. While entering text, touch and drag downward from the top of the screen to display Notificatio ns, then touch Select input method ➔ Google voice typing .

33 Section 3: Accounts an d Contacts This section expl ains how to mana ge accounts and conta cts. Accounts Y our device can synchroniz e with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, information on your device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.
Accounts and Contac ts 34 Y our Google Account In order to utilize your device to t he fullest extent, you will need to create a Google Account when you f irst use your device. With a Google Account, Google a pplications will always be in sync between you r tablet and computer .

Accounts and Contac ts 36 Contacts Display Options There are various ways to display your co ntacts. 1. T ouch Contacts . 2. T ouch the Groups tab, Favo rit es tab, or Contacts tab to view contacts in various ways: •G r o u p s : Display contacts sorted into groups — s uch as Not assigned, Co-workers, Family , Friends, etc.
37 Separating Contacts 1. T ouch Contacts . 2. T ouch a contact in t he Contacts list to display i t. 3. T ouch Menu ➔ Separate contact . A list of linked contacts is displayed. 4. Accounts and Contac ts 38 Sharing Contact Information Y ou can sen d a contact’ s inform ation usin g Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices, or in an Email or Gmai l as an attachment. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices accept contacts and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.
39 Groups Assign contacts to Groups, such as co-workers, family, or friends, to make searching for co ntacts faster o r to quickly send an email to group members. Create a New Group Create a new group when yo u add or edit a contact. 1. T ouch Contacts ➔ Groups tab.

Messaging 42 Section 4: Messaging This section describes ho w to send and receive messages and other features as sociated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our device suppor ts these types of messages: • Email • Gmail • Hangouts • Google+ Note: Y our Wi-Fi-only device does NOT support voice calling and messaging ser vices.
43 5. Enter an account name and your name, if required. 6. T ouch Done . Th e device communicates with the appropriate server to set up your account and synchronize your email. When complete, your email appears in the Inbox for the account. Note: T o configure email account settings at an y time, use Menu ➔ Settings .
Messaging 44 Managing Y our Email Accounts If you add more than one email account, you can view email you receive for all acco unts in the Combine d view screen or you can view email accounts indi vidually .
45 • Priority sende rs : Enter email addresses that you want treated as a priority . •S p a m a d d r e s s e s : Manage your spam address list. • Rules for filtering : Create rules for filter ing email based on names, address, or subject. 3. T ouch an account to configu re specific settings.
Messaging 46 Gmail Settings Use the Gmail Settings to conf igure your Gmail preferences. 1. T ouch Gmail . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Settings for settings. Hangouts Previously know n as Google T a lk, Hangouts is an online place to meet friends and family , share photos, and host video calls.
47 Section 5: Multimedia This section explains how to us e the music features of your device including the Play Music app and the Music Player . WatchON is also de scribed. Listening to Music Y ou can listen to music using your de vice’ s built-in speakers, through a wired headset, or throug h a Bluetooth headset.
Multimedia 48 Music Player Use the Music applica tion to listen to music. T o access Music Play er: 1. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Music . Note: Some file formats are not supp orted depending on the software installed on the device. Some file s may not play properly depending on the en coding method used.
49 – Play speed : Decrease or increase play speed. – Music auto off : Set the op tion Off or set your music to turn off automatically by touching one of the time values. – Ly ri c s : Display the lyrics of the song, if available. – Smart volume : Automatically adjust volume to surroundings.
Multimedia 50 Renaming a Playlist 1. T ouch the Playlists tab and, under My playlists , touch a playlist. 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Edit title . 3. Use the keyboard to enter a new name for the playlis t and touch OK . Changing the Order of a Playlist 1. T ouch the Playlists tab and, under My playlists , touch a playlist.
51 Playing Music 1. To u c h Music . 2. T ouch a song or touch an album or genre and then touch a song in the list of songs on the album. The song you touch starts to play . Unless you choose a repeat option, the tracks in th e current list play in order until the end of the list is reached.
Multimedia 52 During playback, the fo llow ing controls are available: Scan for DLNA-enabled devices. Volume control and SoundAlive. Volu me control showin g volume mut ed. T ouch to view and set SoundAlive options. Access sett ings. Assign the current song as a Favorite.
53 Options While Playing a Song There are various options and controls a vailable while a song is playing: 1. To u c h Music , touch a playlist or an album, and then a song. 2. T ouch the music player to enlarge it. 3. T ouch Menu to display the following options: • V ia Bluetooth : Pla y the current song by using a Bluetooth device.
Multimedia 54 WatchO N Enjoy all of your favorite movies and TV shows with WatchON. Important! Before you use WatchON, verify tha t you have an active Internet connection available. For more information, refer t o “Wi-Fi” on page 79. • Before beginning your initial WatchON application setup, make sure that your TV is turned off.
55 Section 6: Camera and Video Camera Use this applica tion to take photos or videos. Use Gallery to view photos and videos taken with the device’ s camera. From a Home screen, touch ➔ Came ra . Note: The camera automatically shuts off when unused.
Camera and Video 56 Shooting Mode Several photo effects are a vailable. Some modes are not available when tak ing self-portraits. Applications 66 Stopping Alarms Drag outs ide the large circle to stop an alarm. Drag outs ide the large circle to repeat the alarm after a specif ied length of time. Deleting Alar ms T ouch and hold the alarm, and then touch Delete . Calculator The Calculator provides basic and advanced arithmetic functions.

Settings 92 T he Settings Screen Some options are enabled or disabled by touching the OFF/ON b u tt on to turn the option ON or OFF . For some options, you must touch the field, such as Wi -F i, to display and set more options. Some options are enabled or disabled by touching a check box.
93 Air plane Mode Airplane mode allows you to use many of your tablet’ s features, such as the camera, musi c and video apps, etc. when you are in an airplane or in any other area where accessing data netw orks is prohibited.
