Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section allows you to quick ly start using your Samsung SCH-R820 phone by installing the SIM and microSD cards, installing and chargin g the batt ery , activating your service, and setting up you r voicemail account.
6 Setting Up Y our Phone Before using your phone, you need to install the SIM card, microSD™ card, and battery into their r espective internal slots and compartment. R emo ving the batter y co v er Pull up using the slot provided (1) , while lifting the cover off the phone (2).
Getting Started 7 Make sure the gold contacts of the SIM card face into the phone, then carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket (as show n) until the card locks into place. Note: If the SIM card is not inserted correctly , the phone cannot make an L TE conne ction with the network.
8 Installing the Batter y 1. Remove the batter y cover . ( For more information, see “Removing the batter y cover” .) 2. Insert the batt ery into the ph one (1), a ligning the gold contacts on the battery w ith the gold contac ts in the phone. Push down on the bo ttom of the batter y (2) until it snaps into pla ce.
Getting Started 9 Charging the Batter y Y our phone comes with a Wall/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) to rapidly charge your phone from any 120/ 220 V AC outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the ba ttery before usin g your phone for t he first time.
10 2. On the phone, slide the connector cover (1) to expos e the connector . 3. Insert the USB cable into t he port (2). 4. Plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet. 5. When charging is complet e, unplug the charging head from the power outlet and remo ve the USB cable from the phone.
Getting Started 11 TTY Mode Y our phone is fully TTY -compatible, allowing you to connect a TTY device to the phone’ s headset jack. Before you can use your phone with a TTY device, you’ll nee d to enable TTY Mode. For mor e information, refer t o “TTY mode” on page 128.
12 Unlock ing Y our Phone 1. If needed, Press th e Po wer/Lock key on the upper right side to wake the screen. 2. Swipe across the screen. The Home screen appears.
Getting Started 13 Y our Google™ Account Y our new phone uses yo ur Google account to ful ly utilize its Android features, includ ing Gmail, Google Maps, Google T alk, and the Android Market . When you turn on your phone for th e first time, you should set up a connection with your existing Google account, or create a new Google account.
14 Securing Y our Phone By default, the phone locks au tomatically when the screen times out, or you can lock it manually. Y ou can unlock the phone using one of the default Unlock screens, or for increased security , use a personal screen unlock pattern, a Personal Identification Number (PIN), or a passwo rd.

Slide your finger horizontally across the scr een to scroll to the left or right side panels.
28 Primar y Shor tcuts Primary Shortcuts appear at th e bottom of th e display. Y ou can edit the Primary Shortcuts, except for the Applications / Home shortcut. Note: When you access Applications , the Home shortcut replaces the Applications shortcut to provide quick return to the Home sc reen.

Dialing Emer gency Numbers When you call an Emergency Number , such as 911, your phone locks itself in emergenc y mode, only allowing you to make calls to the emergency call center you originally contacted.
36 Making Calls using Speed Dials Speed Dials are 1-, 2-, or 3-digit shortcuts (1 to 100) you assign to contacts, to allo w you to quickly call the contact.

38 Sending Calls to V oicemail When your phone alerts you to an incoming call, you can ignore the call to send the caller to voicemail, or reject the call and send a message to the caller . Ignoring a call When you ignore a call, the call is forwarde d to voicemail.

Entering T ext 43 Screen Keyboard Types Y our phone offers two on-screen QWERTY keyboards: • Samsung Keypad : Use the Samsung Keypad to enter text by touching keys on th e screen. Y o u can also use XT9 pr edictive text to match the first few letters you type with words in a dictionary, then you can sele ct a finished word from a li st.
44 Here are a few tips to get you started: • Spacing is au tomatic : When you finis h a word, just lift you r finger and start the next word. • Double letters : Just “scribble” on the key . • Capitalizatio n : Swype recognizes and ca pitalizes the first word of sentences.

Entering T ext 47 Changing the T ext Input Mode – Ke ypad There are two main keypad layout keys tha t will change the on-screen keys within the QWERTY keypad. The available T ext Input modes are: Sym and Abc . Note: When in Abc mode, the ?123 key appears .

When you synchronize contacts from these accounts with your phone, you may have multiple contacts for one person.
