1 Section 1: Getti ng Star ted This section expla ins how to get star ted with your device by in stalling and charging the ba ttery , installing the SIM card and o ptional memory card, and setting up you r voice mail. Before using your phone for the first time, you’ll need to install and charge the batt ery and install the SIM card.

Unless stated otherwise, instru ctions in this User Manual start with the device unlocked, at th e Home screen .

5 Installing the microSD Memory Car d Y our device supports an opti onal (ext ernal) microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory card for stor age of media such as music, pictures, video and other f iles . The SD card is designed for use with this mobile phone and other devices .
Getting Started 6 R emo ving the microSD Memor y Card 1. Remove the battery co ver . 2. Firmly press th e card into the slot and release it. The card should pop partially out of the slot. 3. Remove the card from the slot. 4. Replace the ba ttery c over.
7 Initial De vice Configur ation 1. Select a language from the associated field. English is the default langua ge. 2. Ta p Start . Note: If a SIM card is not already installe d, tap Skip and set up both a Wi-Fi connection and configure t he Dat e and Time settings.
Getting Started 8 Switching the De vice On or Off Once the device has been configur ed, you will not be prompted with setup screens a gain. 1. Press and hold ( Power/Lock ) until the device swit ches on. The device searches for your ne twork and after findin g it, yo u can make or receive calls.
9 Note: Y ou can choose to configure lock settings to prevent unauthorized use of your device . For more information, refer to “Setting up SIM Card Lock” on page 222. Creating a New Google Account Y ou should create a Google ™ Account when you fi rs t use your device in order to fully utilize the functionalit y .
Getting Started 10 T o create a new Google Account from the W eb: 1. From a computer , launch a Web browser and nav igate to www .google.com . 2. On the main page, clic k Sign-in ➔ Create an account for free . 3. Follow the on-screen prompts to create your free account.
11 Vo i c e M a i l Setting Up Y our V oice M ail Y our device automatically transfers all unanswered calls to voicemail, even if your device is in use or turned off. As soon as your batt ery is charged and the SIM card inserted , activate your voicemail account.

17 11 . Proximity Sensor detects how close an object is to the surface of the screen. This is typically used to detect when your face is pressed up against the screen, such as during a phone call. – While talking on the phon e, the sensor detects ta lk activity and locks the keypad to preve nt ac cidental key presses.

19 Device Display Y our display provides information about the device’ s status, and is the interface to manage feat ure s. It indicates your connection status, signal strength, batt ery status and ti me.
Understanding Y our Device 20 Display settings In this menu, you can change various s ettings for the wallpaper , brightness, or backl ight. From the Home screen, tap ( Applications ) ➔ ( Settings ) ➔ Display . For more information, refer to “Display Settings” on page 210.
21 Displays when a call is in progress. Displayed in the Status bar when the current call is minimized. Displays wh en a call is plac ed on hold and another function is launched. Display ed in the Status bar when the current call is minimized. Displays when you have mis sed an incoming call.

27 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using t he applica tions on your device. There are initially fi ve available panels, each populated with default shortcuts or applications .

33 Camera Launches the built-in 3.0 megapixel camera application from where you can tak e a pic tu re with either the front or rear fa cing ca meras. Note: A microSD card is no longer needed to ta ke pictures or shoot video since there is already 2.7GB of availa ble on-board storage.

Y ou can set up Circles of friends, visit the Strea m to get updates from your Circles, use Messenger f or fast messaging with everyone in your Circles, or use Instant Upload to automatically uplo ad videos and photos to your own private album on Google+.

The Play Store also allows you to provid e feedback and co mments about an application, or flag an application t hat might be incompatible with your phone.
39 V oice Dialer Launches your device’ s built-in voice recognition software, called V oice Dialer , to dial a phone number in your People list or to launch p hone functions. For more in formation, refer to “Using V oice Dialer” on page 59. Y ouT ube Launches the Y ouTube webp age via the browser .
Understanding Y our Device 40 Screen Navigation Using the t ouch screen display and the keys, you can nav igate the features of your device and enter ch aracters. The following conventions are used in this manual to des cribe the navigation act ion in the procedures.

For example, one scre en could contain the Music Player shortcut and other forms of media, while another screen might contain communication apps such as Gmail.
45 T o remove a curren t pri mary shortcut: 1. From the Home screen, touch and hold a curren t shortcut from the primary shortcut area. 2. In a single motion, detach it from the area and then drag it over the X Remove area at th e top of the screen. 3.

49 Section 3: Memor y Car d Y our device lets you use a microSD (SD) or microSDHC card (also referred to as a memory card) to expand available memo ry space. This secure digital card enable s you to exchange images, music, and data between SD-compa tible devices.
Memory Card 50 microSD Icon Indicator s The following icons show your microSD card connecti on st at us at a glance: Important! DO NOT remove a microSD card while the device is accessing or transferring files. Doi ng so will result in loss or damage of data.

57 Making an Emer gency Call W ith a SIM card installed The Emergency c alling mode makes redialing an emerge ncy number a 1-tap process. Before you can re sume normal calling operations, you should firs t exit this mode. 1. Swipe the Lock screen to unlock the device.

63 Adjusting the Call V olume During a call, use the V olume keys on the left side of the phone, to adjust the earpiece volume. Press the Up volume key to increase the vol ume level and the Down volume key to decrease the level. From the Home screen, you can also adjus t t he ring volume using these keys.

67 Dropping One Part icipant 1. From within the merged call, tap MANAGE CONFERENCE . 2. T ap to the left of the number to drop the caller. The participant is disconnected and you ca n continue the call with the other participa nt. 3. T ap to end your conversation with the remaining caller .

Accounts From the Accounts menu you decide if yo u want applications to synchronize, send, and receive data at any given time, or if you want the applications to synchroniz e auto matica lly .
Contacts 84 Contacts List Creating a Contact Note: Contact lists are stored via email accounts. Y ou must have an email account to back up your Contact entries online. If existing Google and Corporate em ail acc ounts have been synchronized to your phone, these will be made available to your device during the creation of new ent ries .

Contacts 94 Synchronizing Contacts Syncing data from your managed accoun ts allows you to add and manage a new or existing conta ct from your online or remote accounts to your phone. Prior to sync ing, you must first have an acti ve Google or Microsoft Exc hange account with current Contact entries, and be signed into your account via t he phone.
95 Display Options The Display opt ions menu allows you to a llows you to choose which contacts to display . Y ou can also choose to display o nly contacts that have phone numbers. Note: Once a display filter has been selec ted, only those Contact entries are shown until the All contacts option is re-selec ted.
Contacts 96 Adding more Contacts via Accounts and Sync When you synchronize applicatio ns such as a corporate email account, Email, or Goog le, using the Accounts and sync option synchronizes t he dat a from the selected account type with your Contacts li st.
97 Additional Contact Options Sending an Email to a Contact Note: Contacts must co ntain and email account and address before you can use the Send email feature. 1. From the Home screen, tap and select an entry . 2. Locate the Email area of the entry and tap the ir email address.
