2 Color Video Multiplex er TECHNICAL OVER VIEW Color video multiplexers are r epresented by three pr oducts: the R V21 16, the R V2109 and the R V2104. The products dif fer only with respect to the number of camera inputs and viewing options provided.
Installation and Operation Man ual 3 The video encoder produces a single video signal containing field by field samples from all camera inputs. The signal is provided in both composite and S-V ideo formats for connection to a video recor der . Encoder operation is continuous and independent of display and decoder functions.

6 Color Video Multiplex er THE FRONT AND REAR PANELS This section briefly describes the multiplexer front and r ear panels. Refer to Multiplexer Setup and Using the Multiplexer for a detailed discussion of features and panel functions. See Fig- ure 5 — Multiplexer Contr ols and Indicators for the location of panel controls.
Installation and Operation Man ual 7 3. Picture-In-Picture [PIP] (up arrow) — Displays the currently selected camera in the full screen format, inset with a 1/16 size picture of one other camera. The inset pictur e can be selected or sequenced. This button functions as an “up” control in the Zoom and Setup modes.

Installation and Operation Man ual 11 S-VHS In NO TE: Do NO T connect both S-VHS IN and VCR IN at the same time. The m ultiple x er will not function proper ly with both inputs connected. Connect this input to the S-V ideo output (play) of an NTSC/EIA (P AL/CCIR) compatible Super VHS video recor der .
12 Color Video Multiplex er Remote The remote connector provides input pins for RS-232 contr ol commands and the Remote Control Panel. See Multiplexer Remote Control for details. RS-232 Control Input Connect remote pin 25 to the output of a compatible sour ce of RS-232 control data.

14 Color Video Multiplex er Camera Chec k The multiplexer multicamera display capability makes checking camera performance as simple as comparing two pictures on one scr een. This method is pr eferable to the dir ect camera to monitor technique because it allows precise adjustment of each camera against a chosen refer ence camera.
Installation and Operation Man ual 15 Making a T est T ape The easiest way to verify multiplexer system operation is to make a test recor ding and play it back. This process effectively tests every piece of equipment in the system. Before pr oceeding with the test tape, complete both the moni- tor calibration and camera check procedur es.

Installation and Operation Man ual 17 SETUP MENUS There ar e seven menus in the Setup menu system. The following paragraphs take you through the menu system step-by-step, describing each menu’s purpose and options.
18 Color Video Multiplex er Menu 2 allows you to review and set each of the multiplexer “toggle” options. T oggle options have only two settings. T o change a setting, position the highlight over it and press the up arrow or d o wn arro w . T he alternate setting appears.
Installation and Operation Man ual 19 Alar m Input P olarity The Alarm Input Polarity option allows you to set the polarity of all multiplexer alarm inputs. It toggles as follows: A CT LOW — Active alarm inputs are “low”. The multiplexer recognizes a contact closur e or TTL/CMOS logic low as an alarm event.
20 Color Video Multiplex er The Number of VCRs option tells the multiplexer how many VCRs are connected. It toggles as follows: ONE — One VCR is connected to the multiplexer . It is used for both recor ding and playback. TW O — T wo VCRs are connected to the multiplexer .
Installation and Operation Man ual 21 Menu 4 allows you to set the minimum multiplexer alarm time. The Alarm Duration setting determines how many seconds the multiplexer remains in the alarm state after an alarm event occurs. Set the Alarm Duration time in seconds using the up and down arrow buttons.
22 Color Video Multiplex er The Motion Detection Setup scr een allows you to define motion detection targets in the camera’s field of view . T o access it, press Function while in the Camera T itles menu (see above). The motion detection screen displays the curr ent camera picture overlaid with a special graphic.
Installation and Operation Man ual 23 The target cursor line is initially positioned in the first r ow of targets. Active targets are cir cled. Inactive targets are not cir cled.
24 Color Video Multiplex er USING THE MUL TIPLEXER The Color V ideo Multiplexer is tremendously flexible and very easy to use. No setup is requir ed to use the basic features, yet the unit can be adapted to meet the display and recor ding requir ements of most multicamera security systems.
Installation and Operation Man ual 25 T ape Preview T o view what is being sent to the VCR, place the VCR in the recor d mode (or any mode other than playback) and pr ess the T ape button.
26 Color Video Multiplex er Viewing One Camer a The Main Monitor can display any live or recor ded camera in the Full Screen format. It can also display a movable 2x zoom of any camera. Main Monitor Full Screen Press any Camera button when the Sel light is NOT lit.
Installation and Operation Man ual 27 Call Monitor In addition to displaying alarm cameras, the Call Monitor can display any live camera in the full screen format. T o select a camera for full screen display on the Call Monitor: 1. Press the Sel button two times quickly .
28 Color Video Multiplex er 4. Press the Camer a button for the desired PIP inset camera. The selected camera appears in the PIP inset. PIP “Swap” Method: 1. Press the PIP button. The multiplexer displays the current camera and the last selected PIP inset camera.
Installation and Operation Man ual 29 3 x 3 F ormat (R V2109 and R V21 16) The 3 x 3 format displays nine pictures at one time. Cameras can be selected for display in any window . Cameras not alr eady displayed can be sequenced in the lower right window .
30 Color Video Multiplex er Sequencing Cameras The multiplexer allows sequential display of cameras on the Main Monitor in any available format. In the full screen format, all cameras can be sequenced full screen. In multicamera formats, cameras not already displayed can be sequenced in the lower right window .
Installation and Operation Man ual 31 Multicamera Recording Multiple camera recor ding involves placing the VCR in the recor d mode. All cameras connected to the multiplexer are encoded onto tape. No action is requir ed at the multiplexer . NO T E: Se ver al factors aff ect the order and rate at which cam- eras are recorded.
32 Color Video Multiplex er T ape Playback T o review tape r ecor ding with the multiplexer , press the T ape button and place the VCR in the play mode. The multiplexer decodes the video signal at the vcr in connector and displays it in the current format.
Installation and Operation Man ual 33 Live Mode Alarm Response When a mechanical alarm occurs in Live mode, the multiplexer alerts the operator and performs tasks requir ed to recor d the alarm event on videotape. When the initial alarm is detected in Live mode, the multi- plexer does the following: 1.
34 Color Video Multiplex er When a mechanical alarm occurs in T ape mode, the multiplexer processes the event in the backgr ound. It performs tasks requir ed to recor d the alarm event on videotape but does not indicate the alarms to the user . This allows alarm recording during tape playback.
Installation and Operation Man ual 35 The multiplexer detects loss of video at any connected camera input by monitoring the camera’s video sync signal.
36 Color Video Multiplex er Recorded Alarms The multiplexer detects recor ded alarm events by monitoring the VIS information returned fr om tape. Each field of recorded video is encoded with alarm status information, camera num- ber , camera title, time and date.
Installation and Operation Man ual 37 Video Motion Detection The multiplexer detects changes in camera video (motion) at any connected camera inputs. It r esponds to motion by increas- ing the rate at which that camera is recor ded and displayed. The goal of motion detection is to prioritize cameras for display and r ecording.
38 Color Video Multiplex er When no motion is detected, the multiplexer encodes cameras in camera number order . Each time through the sequence, the VCR and the display receive one video field fr om each cam- era.
Installation and Operation Man ual 39 The multiplexer counts the number of mechanical alarm events that occur at each camera input. It maintains a total count for each camera until the alarm counter is cleared. The maximum alarm count per camera is 999.
40 Color Video Multiplex er SPECIAL APPLICA TIONS The features and flexibility of the multiplexer make it a powerful tool in special applications where unique capabilities are r equired. This section describes several ways to use the multiplexer . Simultaneous Record and Pla y The multiplexer encode and decode circuits operate simulta- neously .
Installation and Operation Man ual 41 T wo multiplexers can be employed to transmit video from multiple cameras over a single video communication link. The link may be coax cable, a microwave channel, or any other medium that supports real-time video.
42 Color Video Multiplex er The multiplexer provides two methods of r emote control: RS-232 data and a remote panel option. Both methods use the rear panel remote connector .
Installation and Operation Man ual 43 RS-232 remote commands consist of thr ee ASCII characters. All commands begin with the forward slash “/” character . The two characters following the slash identify the command. T able 1 — RS-232 Remote Command Set lists each valid RS-232 command and the button it repr esents.

The multiplexer provides all of the necessary connectors and signals to accomplish this and is flex- ible enough to satisfy most video documentation requir ements.
Installation and Operation Man ual 47 Controlled Alar m Recording When alarm recording is contr olled by the multiplexer , the VCR responds to the alarm signal pr ovided by the multiplexer . The recor der goes into the alarm recor ding mode and recor ds at the alarm recor d speed.
