1 7 PO WER ON Turn the pow er switch on the left side of th e unit to the "O N" positi on. The start ( ) indicato r will ligh t up and o ther ind icators wh ich show t he initia l settings of the operat ion panel will also light up to indica te the re ady conditi on.
1 8 Initial settings of operation panel When the unit power is on, t he operation pane l will revert to th e initial settin gs when the time se t with the "Aut o clear time" setting (p.6 3) elapses after a j ob is finish ed, or when th e clear key is press ed twice.
2 2 9 Follow the steps below to l oad paper i nto the tra y. P APER For best re sults, use onl y paper recom mended by SHARP. *1 Do no t use non- standard e nvelopes , and env elopes th at have meta l clasp s, plasti c snappe rs, string closures , windows, l inings, s elf-adhes ive, pat ches or synthe tic mate rials.
2 10 LO ADING THE P APER TRA Y 1 Raise the handle of the paper tray and pull the paper tray out un til it stops. 2 Adjust the paper guides on the paper tray to the copy paper width and length. Squeeze the lever of paper guide and slide the guide to match with the width of the paper.
2 11 4 Gently push the paper tray back into th e unit. • Be sure th at paper is free of rip s, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edge s. • Make s ure all the paper in the stack is the sam e size and t ype.
2 12 BYP ASS FEED (including special paper) The multi -bypass tray c an be used to feed stan dard paper, t ransparenc y film, labels, envelop es, and ot her speci al purpos e paper. Paper m easuring from A6 to A4 and in th e weight range of 5 6 g /m 2 to 1 28 g /m 2 can be used in this tray.
2 13 2 Set the paper guides to t he paper width. Insert the paper (print face down) all the way into the multi- bypass tray. 3 Press the tray sele ct ( ) key to sele ct the multi- bypass tray . • Pape r must be fed na rro w side into t he feed slot.

3 15 HARD W ARE AND SOFTW ARE REQUIREMENTS Check the following hardware and software requirem ents in o rder to ins tall the softwar e. *1 The machin e's USB 2. 0 port will tr ansfer data at the sp eed spe cifie d by the USB 2.0 (Hi- Spee d) stan dard on ly if the Micr osoft USB 2.
3 16 INST AL LING THE SOFTW A RE 1 The USB cable must not be connected to the machine. Make sure that the cable is not connected before proceeding. If the cable is c onnected, a Plug an d Play wind ow will appe ar. If this happen s, click the "Ca ncel" bu tton to cl ose the win dow and di sconnec t the cable .
3 17 8 Click the "MFP Driver" button. Clic k the "Dis play Re adme" bu tton to show in formation on pac kages that a re select ed. 9 Select " Connected t o this computer" and click th e "Next" button. Follow the on-s creen instruc tions.
3 18 Installing th e Utility Softwa re 11 Click the "Button Manager" or the "Sharpdesk" button. Clic k the "Dis play Re adme" bu tton to show in formation on pac kages that a re select ed. Follow the on-s creen instruc tions.
3 19 14 Follow the instructions in the plug and play window to install the d riv er. When th e "Found New H ardware Wiza rd" appea rs, selec t "Instal l the softw are autom atically (R ecommend ed)", cli ck the " Next" but ton, and f ollow the on -sc reen i nstruc tio ns.
3 20 Using the ma chine as a shared prin ter If the machine w ill be us ed as a s hared prin ter on a net work, follow the se steps to install the printer driver in the cli ent compute r. 1 Perform steps 2 th rough 6 in "INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE" (p.
3 21 5 Select th e printer n ame (con figured as a shared printer). 1 Select the prin ter name (conf igured as a shared pr inter on a prin t server) from the list.
3 22 CONFIGURING THE PRINTER DRIVER Aft er ins tall ing the M FP dr iver, you mu st confi gure the pr inte r dri ver set tings appropria tely for the size of paper l oaded in each. 1 Click the "St art" button, click "Cont rol Panel", and then c lick "Printer" .
3 23 SETTING UP B UTT ON MANA GER Button Ma nager is a software program th at works w ith the sca nner drive r to enable scannin g from the ma chine. To scan using the machin e, Button Ma nager mus t be link ed with the scan menu on the mach ine. Foll ow the s teps belo w to link Bu tton Mana ger to sc anner even ts.

4 27 Setting a large original The ori ginal co ver ca n be remo ved to allow c opying o f bulky obj ects. 1 Simply lift the original cov er straight up.
4 28 SET THE COPY QU ANTITY Set the num ber of copi es using the two c opy quanti ty ( , ) keys when co pying from the d ocument gla s s or copying from SPF. • Press th e right cop y quant ity ke y to set the uni t digit from 0 to 9. This k ey will not chan ge the tens digit.
4 29 Automat ic exposure adjust ment The autom atic expo sure leve l ca n be a djust ed to sui t yo ur cop yin g need s. Th is level is set f or copyi ng from th e docum ent gla ss and copying from the S PF res pectivel y.
4 30 REDUCTION/ENLARGEMENT/ZOOM Three pr eset reduc tion ratios and two enl argement ratio s can be selected . The zoom function enables copy ratio sele ction from 25% to 4 00% in 1% increm ents. (Wh en the SPF is being use d, the zo om copy ratio range is 50 % to 200%.
4 31 SOR T COPY Copies of multi ple origin al pages can be s orted into sets. Using the d ocument glass 1 Place the f irst original. (p .26) 2 Select th e Sort ke y to select the sort mode. 3 Set the number of copies and oth er settings, and then press the start ( ) key.

5 37 Opening the printer driver from the "Start" button You can o pen the pri nter drive r and chan ge the prin ter driver set tings from the Windows "St art" butto n. Settings adjusted in this way will be the initial se ttings when you prin t from an app lication.
5 38 PRINTER DRIVER SETTING SCREEN Some rest rictions exist on the combina tions of sett ings that can be s elected i n the printer dri ver setup screen. W hen a rest riction is in effec t, an inform ation icon ( ) will app ear next to the set ting. Click the icon to vi ew an explanat ion of the rest riction.
5 39 SETTING AD V ANCED PRINT FUNCTION S This se ction exp lains major ad vanced p rint fun ctions. 5 42 Enlarging/reducing the print image (Zoom) This func tion is used to en large or re duce the i mage to a selecte d percentage. This allows you to enlarge a small i mage or a dd margi ns to the paper by slightly reducin g an image . 1 Click the "P aper" ta b in the p rinter driv er setup screen.
5 43 Printing faint text and line s in black (Text To Black/Vector To Black) When pr inting a colour im age, colo ur text an d lines th at are fain t can be p rinted in black. ( R aster da ta such as bit m ap im ages ca nnot be ad justed.) T his allows you to bring out colour text and lines that are fai nt and di fficult to see.
5 44 Adjusting the brightness a nd contrast of the image (Image Adjustment) The brigh tness and contrast can be ad justed in the pr int settin gs when pri nting a photo or o ther image . These s ettings can be used for sim ple correctio ns when y ou do not ha ve image editi ng softw are instal led on yo ur comput er.
5 45 Adding a watermark to printed pages (Watermark) Faint sha dow-like text can be a dded to the background of t he printed image as a waterma rk. The si ze, dens ity, and a ngle of th e waterm ark text can be adjus ted. The text can be selec ted from a pre -stored list, or entered t o create an original watermark.
5 46 SA VING FREQUENTL Y USED PRINT SETTINGS Settings c onfigured on each of the t abs at the time of pr inting ca n be saved as user settings . Saving f requently us ed setting s or comple x colour settin gs under an assigne d name make s it easy to sel ect those se ttings the next time yo u need to use them.
5 47 OUTLINE OF THE PRINT ST A TUS WINDO W When pr inting be gins, the Prin t Status Window automatical ly opens. The Print Sta tus Windo w is a util ity that m onitors t he machine and shows the na me of the doc ument be ing printe d and any erro r messages that oc cur.

6 53 Outline of Button Manager Button Mana ger is a softw are utili ty that allo ws you to use the scanne r function at the machine. B utton Manager allows you to configure si x sets of scanning settings as a scan menu o n the machi ne.
6 54 SCANNING FR OM Y OUR COMPUTER The mach ine supports the T WAIN standard, ma king it po ssible to scan f rom TWAIN- com plian t ap pli catio ns. The mac hine also su pport s WI A (Wi ndo ws I mage Acquisi tion), mak ing it pos sible to scan from WIA-comp liant app lications and the "Scanner and Camera Wizard" in Wi ndows XP.
6 55 5 In the "S canning So urce" men u, select th e location where you placed the original in Step 1. If you p laced a one- sided ori ginal in the SPF , select "SPF" . 6 Click the "Preview" but ton. The preview im age will a ppear.
6 56 Scanner driver settings The scanner driver setup scree n consist s of the "Set-up scr een", whi ch lets you select scan setti ngs, and t he "Preview screen", which shows the scanned image. For details on the scan setti ngs, click the "Hel p" button in th e preview scree n to display Help.
6 57 Preview screen Click the "Preview" button in the Set-up screen to display the scanned image. Y ou can specify the scanning area by dragging the mouse inside the window . The inside of t he frame that is created when you drag the mouse will be the scanning area.
6 58 Scanning from a WIA-co mpliant application (Windows XP/Vista/7) If you are using Wi ndows XP/Vis ta/7, you can use the W IA driver to scan from WIA- comp liant applic ations. 1 Place the original that you w ish to scan on t he docume nt glass/ SPF.
6 59 Scanning from the "Scanne r a nd Camera Wizard" (Windows XP) The proce dure for sc anning wi th the "Sca nner and Camer a Wizard" in Windows XP is expl ained here . The "S canner an d Camera Wi zard" lets you sc an an image without using a WIA-compliant application.

8 8 66 This ch apter desc ribes how t o replace the ton er cartridg e and how to clean th e unit. T ONER CARTRIDGE REPLA CEMENT When the toner cartridge re placement r equired ( ) indica tor lights up, re placement of the ton er cartridge will be need ed soon.
8 67 3 Gently pull the toner cartridge out while pre ssing the l ock release button. 4 Remove the toner cartridge f rom the bag. Grasp the cartridge on both sides a nd shake it horizonta lly four or five times. A fter shaking th e cartridg e, remove the toner se al.
8 68 6 Close the fro nt cover and t hen the side cover by press ing the round projections nea r the side cover open button. The indicator will go out and the start ( ) indicator w ill light up. When closing the cove rs, be sure to clo se the front c over securel y and the n close the side c over.
8 69 CLEANING THE UNIT Proper care is esse ntial in o rder to get clean, s harp copie s. Be sure to take a few minutes to regularl y clean the unit. Cabinet Wipe the cabinet with a so ft, clean cloth.

9 72 Images rub off the cop y easily . Is the paper too heavy? Use paper within the specified range. 9 The fusing temperature is not appropriate. In the user programs, set "Fusing temperature setting when the bypass tray is used" (program 29) to "2 (High)".
9 73 PRINTING AND SCANNING PROBLEMS In additi on to this secti on, troubl eshooting informati on can a lso be fou nd in the README files for each of the software p rograms. To v iew a README fil e, see "INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE" (p.16). Pr oblem Cause and solution Page The machine does not print.
9 74 Printi ng is slo w. Simultaneous use of t w o or more application softw are program s. → Star t printing after quitting all unused application software programs. – The pr inte d imag e is l ight and uneven. The paper is loaded so that printing takes place on the rear side of the p aper .
9 75 Any one of the alarm indicators ( , , , ) is lit or blink ing. See "ST A TUS INDICA T O RS" to check the meaning o f the alarm indicator , and take appropriate action. 79 P oor scanning qual ity . The document glass or th e underside of the document cover/SPF is dirty .
9 76 Unable to scan the imag e . If scanning is not possible, shut down y our computer , turn o f f th e mac hine's po wer swit ch, a nd unplug the machine's power cord. Next, start your computer , restore power to the machine, and tr y scanning again.

9 80 MISF EED REMO V A L When t he misfe ed ( ) indicat or blinks or blinks in the di splay, the unit will stop because of a misfeed. Wh en the SPF m isfeeds an origina l sheet, t he unit w ill stop and the SPF mis feed ( ) ind icator will blink, w hile the misfeed ( ) indicator will rema in off.
9 81 A: Misf eed in the pa per feed area 1 Gently re move the misf ed paper fro m the pa per feed are a as shown in the illustration. W hen the misfeed ( ) indicator blinks, and the misfed paper is not se en from the paper feed area, pull out the paper tray and remove the misfed paper.
9 82 B: Misf eed in the fu sing area 1 Lower th e fusing un it releas e lever. 2 Gently re move the misfed paper from under the fusin g unit as shown in the illustration. If t he paper cannot be removed, proceed to "C: Misf eed in the transpor t area".

9 84 E: Misf eed in t he SP F (Peripheral device) An original misfeed may occur at one of three locations: if the misfed original is seen from the document feeder tray, (A) in the document feeder tray; if t he misfed original is not seen from the docume nt feeder tray, (B ) in the exit area or (C) under the document feeder cover.
9 85 IF A P APER MISFEED OC CURS IN THE M AIN UNIT WHILE USING THE SPF (P eripheral device) If a paper misfeed occurs in the m ain unit p aper path when maki ng copie s with original (s) through the SPF, the SPF wil l automatica lly stop scannin g. Manually remove t he misfe d paper(s) i n the main u nit.
