3 Turning on the phone To turn on the phone 1 Press and hold down . 2 Enter your PIN if requested. To correct mi stakes, sel ect Clear . 3 Select OK . 4 Select a language. 5 Enter the time and date and select OK . Standby After you have turned on the phone and ente red your PIN, the name of your operator appears on the screen.
4 Charging the battery Your phone battery is partly ch ar ged when you buy it. It takes approximately 3 hours to ful ly charge the battery. To charge the battery 1 Connect the charge r to the phone. Press a k ey to view the charging st atus on the screen.
5 SIM card The SIM (Subscribe r Identity Module) card, which you get from your n etwork operator, con tains information about your subscription. Alwa ys turn off your phone and detach the charger be fore you insert or remove the SIM card.

8 Screen icons Network coverage The network b ars show the str ength of the GSM netwo rk. Move to another location if you ha ve network problems. No network means you are out of range.

15 Messaging Text messages You need a service centr e number from your netw ork operator to be able to send text messages. Text messages can contain simp le pictures, sound effec ts, animations , and melod ies. To view and set the service centre number 1 From standby selec t Menu > Messaging > Settings > Service centre .
16 To add a symbol to a text message 1 When you write the messa ge, select Op tions > Add symbol . 2 Select a symbol. To add an item to a text message 1 When you write t he messag e, select Options > Add item . 2 Select an item. Receiving text messages You are notifi ed when you receive a te xt message.
17 To save a phone number from a text message 1 When you view the mess age, select Options > Save number . 2 Enter a name for the co ntact and sele ct Continue > Save . To reply to a text message 1 When you view the mess age, select Options > Reply .
18 Entering text There are t wo input met hods you can use to enter text; multitap or predictive text i nput. To enter text using multitap (no dictionary) • Press – until the letter a ppears. • Press to add a space. • Press to enter punctuation marks.
19 To use the keys • Press to e nter symbols, for exam ple, the + sign. • Pre ss repeatedly to shift bet ween upper ca se and lower case letter s. • Select Clear to delete characters. • Press and hold down – to enter numbers. To change writing language 1 Before inputting text, select Options > Writing language .
20 Contacts Contacts are automa tically saved in the phone m emory. You can copy contact s from the phone memor y to the SIM card. The number of contacts you can save in the phone or on the SIM card depends on available memory. To add a contact 1 From standby selec t Contacts > Add contact .
21 To edit a contact 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to t he contact an d select Options > Edit conta ct . 3 Edit the informat ion and select Save . To copy contacts to the SIM card 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to t he contact an d select Options > Copy to SIM .

26 Alarm You can se t a sound or th e radio as an a larm si gnal. The alarm rings even if the pho ne is off or set t o silent. To set the al arm 1 From standby press . 2 Select Set alarm . 3 Enter the t ime and select Sa ve . To set the radio alarm 1 Connect the hands free to the phone.

31 Ringtones, sounds and alerts Your phone has melodi es that can be use d as ringtone s. To select a ring tone • From standby selec t Menu > Settings > Sounds & alerts > Ringtone and sele ct a ringto ne. To set the ring volume • From standby selec t Menu > Settings > Sounds & alerts > Ring volume and select a volume.
32 Diverting calls Divert calls, f or example, to an answering service. To divert calls 1 From standby selec t Menu > Calls > Call settings > Divert all calls . 2 Select a divert option. To cancel a call divert • From standby selec t Menu > Calls > Call settings > Divert all calls > Deactivate .
33 Multiple calls When call waiting is activated, you can handle m ultiple calls. A short sound indi cates a secon d call. To activate call waiting • From standby selec t Menu > Calls > Call settings > Call waiting > Activate . To answer a sec ond call • Press .
34 Locks Automatic keylock The keypad is locked af ter a short while. To turn on the automatic keylock • From standby selec t Menu > Settings > Adva nced > Auto keylock > On . SIM card lock To turn on the SIM card lock 1 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > Adva nced > Security > SI M lock > Protection > On .
35 Phone lock The phon e lock pr otects t he phon e agains t unau thorized use. You can change the phone loc k code (0000 by default) to any four-digit code. To set the phone lock 1 From standby selec t Menu > Settings > Adva nced > Security > Phone lock > Protection .
36 Troubleshooting You can correct most problems yourself. For mo re support go to www.sonyericsson.com/support , see the Important information guide or contact your n etwork op erator. To reset the phone 1 Remove the bat tery cover and bat tery. 2 Put the battery an d cover back in place an d turn on the phone.
37 What do these error me ssages mean? Insert SIM card Try one or more of the following: • Remove the SIM card and inser t it correctly. • Clean the connect ors on the SIM c ard and phone with a s oft brush, a cloth or a cotton bud. • Check if the SIM card is damaged.
