FEATURES Your new receiver is a versatile audio/video control center. The receiver is designed to sound sensational and be an attractive, easy-to-use addition to your audio/video sy stem. Although you already have a good idea of your receiver’s features, we would like to take a moment to point out certain highlights.
THE BASICS The following is intended to familiarize users with common terms and applications of Home Theater equipment. Sources - your receiver c an direc tly provide audio from its built-in AM/FM tuner. It can also provide limited video from its on- screen m enu system .

Bass Management - Dolby Digital and DT S form ats contain up to 5 full range c hannels plus LFE. Only a system with five full-range (large) s peakers plus a subwoofer can dir ectly reproduce these for mats .
FRONT PANEL 1. Headphone Jack - Stereo headphones having a standard ¼ inch binaural plug can be connected to the headphone output. The receiver must be on and in HEADPHONE Mode for proper headphone operation. 2. Front panel buttons SLEEP PRESET ENTER SAVE DOWN U P SOURCE MODE MENU Puts the receiver in standby (low power) mode.
5. Status indicators - Displays current status of the receivers audio pr ocessor . Indicators have been s upplied to show when the DSP is decoding Dolby Digital ‘ Digital ’, Dolby Pro Logic ‘ Pro Logic ’, or DTS audio.

MAKING THE CONNECTION It’s tem pting to jus t plug in y our new A/V receiver and have great sound pour out. Before you do that, take a f ew minutes to plan out how y ou want the rec eiver to f it into y our audio/video system. Ask yourself the following questions: What source components do I want to connect to my receiver? (CD, VCR, etc.
AUDIO / VIDEO CONNECTIONS Connecting your analog sources to your receiver A udio / Video source - connecting a DVD/VLD play er to the receiver’s analog inputs. Use the sam e instructions for c onnecting to other audio / video s ources s uch as a televis ion, satellite rec eiver, cable box, etc .
Component Video - in addition to S-video and com posite video switching, y our receiver provides two sets of com ponent video inputs f or DVD and T V/DBS type inputs, and one set of c omponent video outputs. Your receivers com ponent video connection are passive to m inim ize the possibility of video f orm at com patibility issues .
DIGITAL CONNECTIONS Connect digital inputs (DVD, VLD, etc.) to the rec eiver. You will need either coax ial or optical digital inputs to play Dolby Digital (AC-3) or DT S surround s ound process ing. Digital connections are also recom m ended for PCM s ources.
SURROUND OUTPUTS Your receiver has m ultiple sur round pr oc ess or outputs f or use with external am plif ier (s ) or powered speak ers . T he AVR 305 receiver allows THX Surround EX compatibility via it’s two Surround Back ‘S BACK’ processor outputs.
SPEAKER OUTPUTS Five-way binding posts ar e provided, one pair f or each channel. They are designed to accept a banana-t y pe plug or spade lug connector (s how n below) and are color coded for easy identification. The red (+) post should always be connected to the speak er’s red (+) jack .
ANTENNA CONNECTIONS The FM j ack is a standar d screw on F-type connector. T he AM is a push ty pe. Strip ¼ inch of insulation off y our AM antenna wires and ins ert one wire end into each hole while holding the tabs down. Release the tabs to loc k in the AM antenna wires.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS My collection of equipment differs from the labels on the back of my receiver, how can I hook them up? Your receiver provides 5 identical sets of inputs - V1, V2, DVD, CD, and SAT. Each of these has analog audio, com posite video, S-video, c oaxial digital audio, and optic al digital audio.
M y laser disc player (or other digital source) has only optical output, but my CD recorder (o r other digital recorder) has only coaxial input. Do I need some sort of converter to make direct digital recordings? No, y our receiver will convert optical to coaxial and coax ial to optical.

Speaker Levels Speaker level calibr ation allows you to equalize the volume levels of each s peaker to m ake up for diffe rences in speak er charac teristics and distanc es from the lis tener to the speakers .
Crossovers + LFE Usually these settings m ay be left s et to the factor y defaults. However, your receiver allows ‘f ine tuning’ of the system parameters most useful in setting up a high end audio system.

Set your LFE (.1) channel level - Usually this will be set to 0.0 dB (default) . However, if you have no subwoofer y ou may wish to reduc e the low frequenc y eff ects (LFE) channel to les sen its c ontribution to the bass going to your rem aining lar ge speak ers .
Set subwoofer phase - In addition to the subwoofer location adj ustm ent (see Speak er Loc ation above), your receiver has an option to ‘invert the phas e’ of the infor m ation sent to the s ubwoofer .
Room Equalization Usually these settings m ay be left set to the f actory defaults. However, theses s ettings allow y ou to correc t or reduce the various tonal errors that occur during reproduction of audio in a home theater. The room equalization menu allows for two types of adjustments.

Set DVD audio input - Allows you to select which ONE input source to dedic ate f or use with the DVD Audio inputs. Use volume w it h presets - Recalling a pres et nor m ally recalls the entire system s ettings that were pres ent when the preset was saved. However, you may wish to recall presets with the current volume s etting, rather than the volume setting when the preset was saved.
MEMORY BACKUP Your receiver c ontinually saves any settings you have made even if power is los t. However, you may wish to save a back up of y our settings in case of inadver tent changes to them. T o perform a back up follow the procedure below. To restore back up settings perform the sam e procedure but selec t restore instead of backup.
OPERATION The f ollowing outlines the normal day-to-day operation of y our receiver f rom the supplied universal r em ote or directly from your receiver’s f ront panel. T he univers al rem ote is also c apable of controlling other equipm ent and storing sequenc es of com m only used comm ands.
CHOOSING A SOURCE In general, the selected sourc e will appear at the Zone 1 (A) output, the TAPE output, and the V1 output. To prevent feedback, TAPE input will not appear at TAPE output and V1 input will not appear at V1 output. DVD Surround 7 EQ Variable DVD 5.

AUDIO MODES Your receiver is designed to work with 5 audio listening modes. Under nor mal operation you may simply select Mono, Stereo, Surround, TH X or DVD Audio via the rem ote contr ol. In addition, you may choose an audio listening mode im m ediately followed by a speak er select ion.
Audio Mode description MONO Sums the incoming audio infor mation to a single channel and routes it to the desired speaker. Us eful during FM tuner operation having weak RF signal strengths . It may also be useful when y ou have a large group where it is difficult to put everyone near the optimum listening position.
Speaker selection 8 ‘DIRECT’ - allows selection of the ‘analog’ signals connected to the currently selected input sources L & R RCA audio inputs overriding the use of optical or coax S/PDIF. No process ing is applied to the audio signals other than level c ontrol.
EQUALIZATION ‘EQ’ Selecting an EQ function via the remote control - allows you to override how the audio is currently being process ed. This is where you may set the Dy nam ic Range to either Norm al (def ault) or Lim ited f or late night listening while using Dolby Digital bit streams.
Select variable ‘EQ 1’ - to allow separate bass and treble settings for use with all input sources. Many systems allow only adjustment of bass and treble levels at fixed frequenc y points.
Select loudness ‘EQ 2’ - sets the equaliz er to use preset filter c urves designed for us e when using low listening levels. T he human ear’s f requency response varies with volume level. At high levels it has relatively flat response, while at low levels its sens itivity to high and low fr equencies is r educed.
PRESETS Presets allow you to save y our f avorite settings and rec all them ins tantly . Your rec eiver can store two banks of 40 presets ( 0..39) in each of 2 Zones.
ZONE 1 (A) Recalling/Saving Presets via the Menu System You can also rec all, save presets and operate your receiver via the m enu s y stem from the r emote or from the f ront panel. If using the remote be sure it is in B&K mode and you are in the MAIN MENUS.
