2 System setup 18 Connecting peripherals The system unit, keyboard, mouse, and monitor constitute the basic system. Before connecting any othe r peripherals, co nnect these basic peripherals first to test if the system is running properly . Instructions on how to connect a printer is also described here, refer to page 21 .

2 System setup 22 Connecting th e power cable Plug the power cable into the power cable socket located on the rear panel of the server . Then plug the other end of the power cable into a power outlet. The figure below sh ows a complete connection of the whole system.
23 T ur ning on the system After making sure that you have properly set up the system and connecte d all the req uir e d ca bles , you can now power on the system. T o power on the system, press the po wer button on the front panel. The system starts up and displays a welcome message.
2 System setup 24 Power - on problems If the system does not boot after you have applie d power , check the following factors that might ha ve caused the bo ot failure. • The external power cable may be loosely connected. Check the power cable connec tion from the power source to the power cable socke t on the rear panel.
25 Operating system configuration The Acer Altos G700 series serv er come s with Acer EasyBUILD TM that allows you to convenien tly install yo ur choice of operating system. T o start using EasyBUILD, follow the steps below . 1 Locate the EasyBUILD System CD in cluded in the system pac ka ge.

27 T ower -to-rack option Aside from its tower configuration, the Acer Altos G700 series server can also be mounted in a rack-model position. A rack mo unt kit is available for customers who want to convert a tower-mounted system to rack-model design.

31 Upgrading the system Certain components of the server ar e upgradeab le such as the drive s, the CPU, the memory , an d the expansion cards. However , for safety purposes, we do not recommend th at you perfo rm these upgrades yourself.
3 Upgrading the system 32 3 Open the system according to the instructions on page 33 . 4 Follow th e ESD precautions described in this section when handling a server component. 5 Remove any expansion board(s) or peripheral(s) that block access to the DIMM socket or other component connector .
33 Opening the server Caution! Before you proceed, make sure that you have turned off your system and all peripherals connected to it. Read the “Preinstallation instructions” on page 31 . Y ou need to open the server be fore you can install ad di tional components.

35 6 Slide th e left pane l slightly forward (2) , then upward (3) before detaching it from the chassis (4) . Removing the air baffle Once you removed the left panel, most of the syst em’ s internal components are still hidden from view by the air baf fle.
3 Upgrading the system 36 2 Pull out the air baf fle to remove it from the chassis. Caution! After completing the comp onent upgrade/replacem ent procedur es, do not fo rget to reinstall the air baffle befor e replacing the chassis panels.
37 Configuring the hot-swappable cage This section include s instructions f or removi ng and installing the hot-swappable cag e as well as pro ced ures on how to install a hard disk into th e cage’ s har d disk ca rrier . Note: The hot-swap SCSI HDD Cages can not be cascaded for Altos G701 model.

41 Installing and r emoving storage devices The system supports one 3.5-inch an d three 5.25-inch internal storage devices. The system comes pre-in stalled wit h a floppy drive and a CD-ROM drive. The two empty 5.25-inch half-heigh t bays allow you to install additional drives such as another CD-ROM drive or a tape drive.
3 Upgrading the system 42 4 Remove the three screws that ho ld the old drive to the drive carrier then pull it out. 5 Install a new 3.5-inch drive to the drive carrier then secure it with the three screws you have removed earlier .
43 6 Insert the drive carrier with the newly-installed fl op py drive into the drive bay . 7 Connect th e IDE and floppy driv e cables to the new d rive.
3 Upgrading the system 44 Installing a 5.25-inch storage device (optional) Note: If you are installing a new drive in an empty drive bay , skip steps 2 to 4. 1 Observe the ESD precautions an d pre-installation procedures described on page 31 . 2 Disconnect the power and IDE cables from the old drive.
45 5 Install a new 5.25-inch dr ive to the drive carrie r then secure it with the eight screws you have removed earlier . 6 Insert the drive carrier with the newly-installed 5.25-inch drive into the drive bay . 7 Connect the po wer an d IDE cables to the new dri ve.
3 Upgrading the system 46 Upgrading the CPU This section includes in structions for removing and installing a CPU. T o remove a CPU with heatsink Before you can in stall a new CPU in a socket, remove first any previously i nstalled CPU from that socket.
47 T o install a CPU with heatsink If only one CPU is to be installed, i t must be instal led in the CPU 1 socket; if such is the ca se, the CPU 2 socket no longer requires a terminatio n module. 1 Observe the ESD precautions an d pre-installation procedures described on page 31 .
3 Upgrading the system 48 Upgrading the system memory This section includes instructions for removi ng and installing a memory module. Memory modules must be installed and removed in pairs, observing sequential slot positions.
49 T o install a DIMM 1 Observe the ESD precautions an d pre-installation procedures described on page 31 . 2 Locate the DIMM socket on the mainboard. 3 Open the clips on the soc ket. 4 Align then insert the DIMM into the socket (1) . 5 Press the holding cl ips inw ard to lock the DIMM in p lace (2) .

51 8 Insert the bracket with the ca rd into the selected slot (4) . 9 Press the PCI slot lock lever on the rear panel of the server . 10 Observe the post-installatio n instructions descri bed on page 32 .
3 Upgrading the system 52 Installing a r edundant power supply module The Altos G701 server power s ubsystem consists of two hot-swappable power supply module bays that accept standard 450-watts power supply modules. The system comes bundled wit h on ly a single power supply module leaving one pow er supply module bay empty .
53 T o install a redundant power supply module 1 Remove the screw securing the cover of the empty power supply module bay , then detach the cover . 2 Slide th e po wer supp ly mod ule in to the empty bay until you feel resista nce.
3 Upgrading the system 54 3 Press the module handle to secure the power supply module to its bay . 4 V erify that the power indicators on both the ma in po wer supply and on the newly instal led power su pply are illuminated (gr een).
55 Installing a hot-swappable HDD fan The Altos G700 series server accommodates two hot-swappable HDD fans. Note: The illustrations used in this section shows the Altos G701 server chassis. T o remove a hot-swappable HDD fan Caution! T o reduce the risk of personal injury , avoid contact with the fan when the blades are still moving.

59 BIOS setup BIOS setup is a hardw are configuration program buil t into your system's Basic Input/Output Syste m (BIOS). Since most systems are already properl y configured and op timized, there is no need to run this utility .
4 BIOS setup 60 Entering BIOS setup Power on the server to start the sy stem POST (Power On Self T est) process. During bootup, pr ess Ctrl-Alt-Esc to ente r the BIOS setup screen. Note: Y ou mus t press Ctrl-Alt-Es c while the system is booting. This key combination does not work du ring any other time.

4 BIOS setup 70 Block Mode Enhances disk performanc e depending on the hard dis k in use. If you set this parameter to Auto, BIOS setup automatically detects if the installed hard disk drive supports the Block Mode function. If su pported, it allows data transfer in blocks (multiple sectors) at a rate of 256 bytes per cycle.

4 BIOS setup 72 PCI/PnP Configuration The PCI/PnP Configuration submenu lets you specif y the settings for the PCI devices. Parameter Description Option Plug & Play OS When this parameter is set to Y es, BIOS setup initializes only PnP boot devices such as SCSI cards.
73 Reset Configure Data BIOS setup stores the configuration data of Plug and Play devices in NVRAM (Non-vola tile Random Access Memory) . When this parameter is set to Y es, current data is deleted and a new set of information is created during the next system bootup.

75 Quiet Boot Enables or disables the Quiet Boot function. When set to Enabled, BIOS setup is in graphical mode and d isplays only an identification logo du ring POST and while booting. After booting, the screen displays the operating s ystem prompt (suc h as DOS) or logo (such as Windows 95).

81 Power The Power menu allows you to conf igure the system’s power management feature. Parameter Description Option ACPI-aware O/S This parameter indicates whether the system’ s OS support the ACPI (Advanced Configuration a nd Power Interfac e) standard of power manag ement.
4 BIOS setup 82 AC Power Failure Defines the power state to resume to after a system shutdown that is due to an interruption in AC power . When set to Last State, the system will return to the active power state prior to shutdown. When set to Stay Off, the system remains off after power shutdown.
83 Boot The Boot menu allows you to specif y th e preferred settings during system bootup. Press Enter to enter the submenu screen of the parameters shown in the screen below .

The rac k brackets are used to attached the mo unting ra ils to the server . Each bracket is composed of three pieces: a de tachable inner rail and a fixed middle and outer ra ils.
107 Do the same thing to the other rack bracket. 5 Attach the inner rails to t he top and bo ttom side of the server . (1) Align the inner rail to th e five screw holes located on the bottom si de of the server . (2) Secure the rail to the server using M4 x L5 screws.
