Chapter 1 Introduction 1-1 Overview The Supermicro SuperServer 5014C-MF is a high-end single processor , 1U rack- mount server with state-of-the-art features. The 5014C-MF is comprised of two main subsystems: the SC513L-260 1U chassis and the P8SCT motherboard.
1-2 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual 1-2 Motherboard Features At the heart of the SuperServer 5014C-MF lies the P8SCT , a single processor motherboard based upon Intel's E7221 chipset.
Chapter 1: Introduction 1-3 Onboard Controllers/Front Side Ports An onboard IDE controller supports one fl oppy drive and up to four Ultra A T A 100 hard drives or A T API devices. Front side ports include one COM port, one parallel (printer) port, two USB ports, PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports, a graphics port and two Gigabit LAN (NIC) ports.

Chapter 1: Introduction 1-5 1-3 Server Chassis Features The SuperServer 5014C-MF is built on the SC513L-260 1U rackmount server chassis. The SC513L-260 features a unique design that places all I/O ports at the front of the chassis for easy access. The following is a general outline of the main features of the SC513L-260 chassis.
1-6 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual Cooling System The SC513L-260 chassis has an innovative cooling design that features one 10-cm blower-type system cooling fan. The blower fan plugs into a chassis fan header on the motherboard and an air shroud channels the airfl ow to effi ciently cool the processor area.

Chapter 2: Server Installation 2-5 Installing the Chassis Rails Position the fi xed chassis rail sections you just removed along the side of the chassis so that the three screw holes line up with the corresponding holes on the chassis. Note that these two rails are left/right specifi c.

Chapter 3: System Interface 3-1 Chapter 3 System Interface 3-1 Overview There are several LEDs on the control panel to keep you constantly informed of the overall status of the system as well as the activity and health of specifi c com- ponents. There are also two buttons on the chassis control panel.

These LEDs provide you with critical information related to different parts of the system. This section explains what each LED indicates when illuminated and any corrective ac- tion you may need to take.

Chapter 4: System Safety 4-3 4-3 ESD Precautions Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is generated by two objects with different electrical charges coming into contact with each other . An electrical discharge is created to neutralize this difference, which can damage electronic com ponents and printed circuit boards.

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-3 5-3 Connecting Cables Now that the motherboard is installed, the next step is to connect the cables to the board. These include the data (ribbon) cables for the peripherals and control panel and the power cables.
5-4 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual 5-4 I/O Ports The I/O ports are color coded in conformance with the PC 99 specifi cation. See Figure 5-2 below for the colors and locations of the various I/O ports, all are located at the front of the chassis.
Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-5 5-5 Installing the Processor Processor Support The P8SCT has a single LGA775 socket, which supports Intel Pentium 4 (800 MHz FSB) or Intel Celeron (533 MHz FSB) processors. ! 1. Press the socket lever to release the load plate that covers the CPU socket from its locking position.
5-6 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual 4. Use your thumb and index fi nger to hold the CPU at the north center and south center edges of the CPU. 5. Align Pin 1 of the CPU with Pin 1 of the socket. Once aligned, carefully lower the CPU straight down and into the socket.
Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-7 Heatsink Installation 1. Do not apply any thermal grease to the heatsink or the CPU die; the required amount has already been applied. 2. Place the heatsink on top of the CPU so that the four mounting holes are aligned with those on the retention mechanism.

Memory support The P8SCT supports up to 4 GB of dual or single-channel, unbuf fered ECC or unbuffered non-ECC DDR2-533 or DDR2-400 SDRAM. Both interleaved and non- interleaved memory are supported, so you may populate any number of DIMM slots.

5-12 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual Reset Connector The reset connector is located on pins 3 and 4 of JF1 and attaches to the reset switch on the computer chas- sis. See the table on the right for pin defi nitions. PW_ON Connector The PW_ON connector is on pins 1 and 2 of JF1.
Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-13 Overheat LED (OH) Connect an LED to the OH connection on pins 7 and 8 of JF1 to provide ad- vanced warning of chassis overheat- ing. Refer to the table on the right for pin defi nitions. NIC2 (JLAN2) LED The LED connections for JLAN2 are on pins 9 and 10 of JF1.
5-14 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual Power On LED The Power On LED connector is lo- cated on pins 15 and 16 of JF1 (use JLED for a 3-pin connector). This connection is used to provide LED indication of power being supplied to the system. See the table on the right for pin defi nitions.
Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-15 W ake-On-LAN The W ake-On-LAN header is des- ignated JWOL on the motherboard. See the table on the right for pin defi nitions. Y ou must enable the LAN W ake-Up setting in BIOS to use this function. (Y ou must also have a LAN card with a W ake-On-LAN connector and cable to use this feature.

Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-17 5-10 Jumper Settings Explanation of Jumpers T o modify the operation of the mother- board, jumpers can be used to choose between optional settings. Jumpers create shorts between two pins to change the function of the connector .
5-18 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual System Power Force On Jumper JPF allows you to enable or disable the Force-Power-On function. If enabled, system power will always stay on. If disabled (the normal set- ting), the user needs to press the power button to power on the system.
Chapter 5: Advanced Motherboard Setup 5-19 JLAN1/JLAN2 Enable/ Disable Change the setting of jumper JPL1 to enable or disable the JLAN1 port and JPL2 to enable or disable the JLAN2 port on the motherboard. See the table on the right for jumper settings.

The chas- sis includes air seals under the blower fan and at the chassis cross section, which separates the drive bay area from the motherboard area of the chassis to promote better airfl ow .

T o add or remove the Serial A T A drive, you must fi rst remove the top chassis cover to gain access to the inside of the system.

6-6 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual 6-5 Power Supply The SuperServer 5014C-MF has a single 260 watt power supply . This power sup- ply has the capability of operating at 100 - 240 input volts. Shutdown the system and then unplug the AC power cord to completely remove power from the system before removing the power supply .
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-1 Chapter 7 BIOS 7-1 Introduction This chapter describes the A wardBIOS for the P8SCT . The Award ROM BIOS is stored in a Flash chip and can be easily upgraded using a fl oppy disk-based program. Note: Due to periodic changes to the BIOS, some settings may have been added or deleted and might not yet be recorded in this manual.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-5 7-4.1 Advanced BIOS Features When the item of Advanced BIOS Features is highlighted, press the <Enter> key to activate the submenu below: Quick Boot If enabled, this feature allows the system to skip certain tests while booting.
7-6 S UPER S ERVER 5014C-MF User's Manual MPS V ersion Control This setting allows you to select the MPS version for your operating system. The options are "1.1" and " 1.4 ". Agent After Boot Set this option to Enabled to keep the "Agent" of Remote Access running after OS bootup.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-9 7-4.4 PnP/PCI Confi guration Choose PCI/PnP Confi gurations from the Award BIOS main menu with the Left/ Right arrow keys. Y ou should see the following display: Initial Display From This feature sets the device that will initiate the monitor display when the system is fi rst turned on.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-1 1 7-4.5 Hardware Monitors There are only three settings on this menu (below). The rest of this menu shows various temperatures and voltage levels as indicated. CPU W arning T emperature This allows you to set the CPU warning temperature.

The options are " Thermal Monitor 1 (On die throttling) " and "Thermal Monitor 2 (Ratio & VID transition).
Chapter 7: BIOS 7-13 7-4.7 DMI Event Log DMI Event Log This setting allows you to Enable or Disable the function of DMI Event Logging. The options are Disabled and Enabled. Clear All DMI Event Logs Select Y es and press <Enter> to clear all DMI event logs.

Chapter 7: BIOS 7-15 Set Supervisor Password When the item "Set Supervisor Password" is highlighted on the above screen, press the <Enter> key . When prompted, type the Supervisor Password in the dialogue box to set or to change the Supervisor Password.
