7 Connecting power to Base Unit/Handset Charger 1. Plug the AC power adapter into an electrical outlet, and the DC connector into the bottom of the Base Unit. 2. Choose the location for your Handset Charger , and plug its power supply into an electrical outlet.
8 Setup GETTING ST AR TED Follow the steps below: 1 . Remove the battery cover by pressing on the indent and sliding downward. 2. Place the new battery pack in the Handset with the metal contacts aligned with the charge contacts in the battery compar tment.
9 GETTING ST AR TED Connecting to phone line Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the jack on the back of the Base Unit. Plug the other end of this cord into the wall jack. Checking for dial tone After the battery is charged press ON on the Handset.

Plug the AC adapters into an electrical outlet, and the DC connector to the bottom of the Base Unit. 2. 13 Y our VT5831 Handset comes registered to the Base Unit. T o register additional VT5820 Handsets, f ollow these steps: Enter Base ID Code 1 . After charging the Handset, remove it from its Charge Cradle; the screen will display: alternating with this screen: 2 .
14 Description Line In Use indicator On steady with no number next to it when a parallel set is in use. On steady with one or more numbers next to it, indicating which extensions are using the line. For example, 12 indicates that Handset 1 and Handset 2 are on an outside call.
15 Handset and Base Indicators Handset LEDs Description • Flashes to indicate that you have new voicemail messages. Service must be subscribed to through your local telephone company • Lights when line is being used by a Handset of the VT5831 system.
16 Soft Menu Functions The VT5831 has an advanced design that uses a menu structure and soft keys to access many of the features. Example of the idle mode display: REDIAL From the Handset: Press REDIAL to display the last 10 telephone numbers dialed from the Handset.
17 B ASIC OPERA TION • T o dial, press SPEAKER PHONE. Erasing Numbers in Redial Memory (Handset or Base) • Press REDIAL , then scroll to the desired number . • Press SELECT , then ERASE . Saving Redial Numbers in Phone Book Memory (Handset or Base) • Press REDIAL, then scroll to the desired number .
18 HANDSET MENU With the Handset in the idle (OFF) mode, press MENU to access the following options: • CALLS LOG (Caller ID) • INTERCOM • HANDSET SETTINGS • SET TIME • CLOCK MODE • REGISTER Use the scroll keys to select the desired option, then press OK .
19 Calls Log (Caller ID) Caller ID - Call W aiting ID Y our VT5831 is capable of displaying the name and/or n umber of the par ty calling before you answer the phone ( Caller ID ). It is also capable of displaying Caller ID inf ormation in conjunction with a Call W aiting aler t signal ( Call W aiting Caller ID ).
20 Calls Log (Caller ID) Reviewing Caller ID from the Handset or Base As new Caller ID/Call Waiting ID records are received, your Handset and Base displays will aler t you to the ne w Caller ID records, for example: The number of new calls displayed on each system Handset and Base may not be the same.
21 SA VE: Select this option to sav e the display ed Caller ID record into Speed Dial Memory . Only Caller ID records with telephone numbers can be sa ved into Speed Dial Memory . If y ou need to modify the n umber after sa ving, see TO EDIT A NUMBER .
22 B ASIC OPERA TION Handset Settings F rom the HANDSET SETTINGS menu you can select the following options to modify: • RINGER V OLUME Select this option to adjust the ringer volume. Use the scroll keys to adjust the volume up or do wn. Y ou will see a graph on the Handset display indicating the relative volume setting.
23 Handset Settings B ASIC OPERA TION • KEYP AD T ONE (preset to ON) Select this option to turn the Ke ypad tones on or off. Press the OFF or ON soft key to make your selection. Press OK to confirm your selection and return to the HANDSET SETTINGS menu.
24 B ASIC OPERA TION T o access Base Settings, with the Base in the idle (OFF) mode, press MENU , scroll down to B ASE SETTINGS , then press OK . Y ou can now access the following setting options: •.

26 B ASIC OPERA TION The VT5831 can store up to 50 names/numbers in memory . Each memor y location can hold up to 32 digits and up to 16 characters for the name.
27 B ASIC OPERA TION T o Store a Number/Name: • Star ting from the idle screen, enter the number y ou want to store in memory . • Be sure to include long distance codes and pauses (using the P A USE softkey) if necessary . Press the MEM softk e y .
28 B ASIC OPERA TION Mem (Memory) T o Search For and Dial a Number/ Name: • Star ting from the idle screen, press the MEM softkey to review memory contents.
29 B ASIC OPERA TION • Press the DEL softke y . The screen will display: • T o delete this record, press THIS . The record will be deleted, and the next entry in the phonebook will be displayed. • T o delete all records in y our phonebook memor y , press ALL .
30 Making Calls F rom the Handset • Press ON (or , SPEAKERPHONE to use the Handset Speakerphone feature). Dial the phone number . -OR- • Dial the phone number first; then press ON (or SPEAKER PHONE ). • Press OFF to end your call. Answering Calls F rom the Handset • Press any key except OFF and the softkeys.
31 Handset and Base Operation AD V ANCED OPERA TION How to Adjust the Handset V olume ( also applies to the Handset Speakerphone) Th e volume control is on the right edge of the Handset. During a call, press the UP or DO WN key to adjust the listening v olume to a comfortable le v el.
32 Handset and Base Operation AD V ANCED OPERA TION Mute Function During an active call pressing either the MUTE soft key on the Handset or the MUTE key on the Base (when in Speakerphone mode), will disable the microphone. Press MUTE key again to return to normal 2-way conversation.
33 Handset and Base Operation Intercom From Base to ALL Handsets : • T o page all Handsets from the Base press the INTERCOM key . Scroll to GLOBAL P A GE , then press OK . • Each Handset will display GLOBAL CALL FROM BASE. • Any Handset can then ans wer the PA G E , and enter INTERCOM mode with the Base by pressing the ON or any number key .
34 Message W aiting Indication The VT5831 is compatible with optional v oicemail ser vice provided b y some local telephone companies. If you subscribe to this ser vice, and y ou have ne w , unpla yed messages in your v oicemail, a Visual Message W aiting Indication (VMWI) signal is transmitted b y y our local telephone compan y .
35 Handset and Base Operation The VT5831 will detect a VMWI signal and activate Message Waiting lights on the Base and Handset(s). See Handset and Base Unit Layouts , pages 5 and 6 , for the location of the Message W aiting lights. After you pla y all of y our ne w messages, the Message Waiting indicators will automati- cally turn off.
36 Headset Operation Y our VT5831 cordless telephone is equipped with a 2.5mm Headset Jack for use with an optional accessory Headset for hands-free operation. If you choose to use the Headset option, you must obtain an optional accessory Headset, which is compatible with the VT5831 .
37 Maintenance T aking Care Of Y our T elephone Y our VT5831 cordless telephone contains sophisticated electronic par ts, so it m ust be treated with care.
