1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100. This product is part of a family of advanced high-performance power inverters from Xantrex, the leader in high -frequency inverter design. The XPower Pocket Powerpack 100 has two separate modules: 1.
The XPower Pocket Powerp ack 100 uses reliable solid state power el ectronics for years of safe, trouble- free operation and includes automatic safety monitoring circuitry to protect it, and your battery , from inadvertent overload conditions.
2 Important Safety Information Misusing or incorrectly connecting the XPower Pocket Powerp ack 100 may damag e the equipmen t or create hazardous conditions for users. Read the following safety instructi ons and pay special attention to all Caution and W arning statements in th e guide.
WA R NI N G The inverter housing may become uncomfortably warm, reaching 140° F (60° C) under extended high power operation. During ope ration, keep it away from materials that may be affected by high temperatures.
W ARNING: Shock hazar d Use caution when inserting an AC plug into the three-prong AC outlet. The prongs of an AC plug can become bent from misuse. If an AC plug is improperly inserted into the AC outlet, a bent prong can slip outside the inve rter and become a shock hazard.
WA R NI N G : F i r e h a z a rd • Never charge the Powe rpack unattended. • Charge the Powerpack in an isolat ed area, away from other flammable materials.
W A RN IN G: P ersonal Injury • The cells inside the Po werpack contain toxic substances. Do not use the Powerpack if the casing is broken or if it emits an unusual odor , produces excessive heat, or leaks. A void contact with any substance that leaks from the Powerpack.
CAUTION: A C output non-sinusoidal Some char gers for small nicke l-cadmium batteries can be damaged if connecte d to the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100.
Additional Safety Guidelines • Do not insert foreign objects in the AC outlet or other openings. • Never connect the XPow er Pocket Powerpack 100 to power util ity AC distribution wiring. • Do not use the XPower Po cket Powerpack 100 in temperatures over 100° F (40° C).
3 Safety F eatures These advanced safety features are built into the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100: • Electronic overload protection • User-replaceable 10 A fus e • Low battery voltage shutdow n • High-input voltage protecti on • Over-temperature protection • Output short circuit protection.

5 Using the Inverter Through its AC outlet , the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100 is capable of powering most 120 V AC product s that use 100 W or less. The XPower Pocket Powerpack 100 can also power or charge most consumer electronics that have USB power ports.
Using the Inverter Module with DC Input Cable Using the V ehicle P ower Outlet Ad apter Due to the limitat ions of 12 V outlets i n automobiles or boats, the inverter m odule should only be used to supply AC power to products that require 100 W (about 0.
4. Plug the device you want to operate into the inverter module. See “Inverter Operation” on page 20. 5. When the inverter module is not in use, unplug it from the 12 V outlet to prevent slight discharge of the battery . Figure 4 Connecting the Adapter and DC Cable Press latch to remove adapter.
Using the Airplane P ower Plug 1. Plug the DC input cable into the DC in put port on the inverter module. Observe correct polarity . See Figure 4. 2. Insert the airplane power plug into the 12 V outlet. 3. Plug the device you want to operate into the inverter module.
Airline Compatibility T able 1 provides a list of airlines, ai rcraft, and passenger classes that have DC power sockets compatible with the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100.
Using the Inverter with P owerpack The Powerpack is designed to connect to the inverter module and prov ide power to operate or charge devices that consume 100 W or less. T o use the Powerpack: 1. Connect the inverter module to the Powerpack, ensuring that the mounting tab on the Powerpack slides into the slot underneath the inverter .
When the battery in the Powerpack has dischar ged below 10%, the LED will illuminate red, indicating that the battery needs to be rechar ged. Figure 5 Connecting the Inverter and P owerpack DC outp.
6 Inverter Oper ation Operation with the DC Input Cable Follow these procedures an d guidelines when using the inverter module as a stand-alone unit. 1. When the DC input cable is properly connected to a 12 V outlet, the ligh t on the inverter modul e will glow blue, indicating the inverter is ready .
• If an AC product rated higher than 100 W is plugged into the XPower Pocket Powerpack 10 0, the inverter will shut down. The red fault light comes on. • Appliances such as televisions and devi ces wi th motors consume much mo re power than their average rating when they are switched on.
• Should a defective battery charging system cause the battery voltage to rise to dangero usly high levels, the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100 automatically shuts down. The red fault li ght comes on. • In the event of an overload, low b attery voltage or overheating, the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100 automatically shuts down.
When using a vehicle battery as a power source, it is strongly recommended to start the vehicle every hour or two to recharge the battery before its cap acity drops too low .
Device Run Times T ypical portable devices that can be used with the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100 are listed in T able 2. Interference with Electr onic Equipment Generally , most AC products operate with the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100 just as they would with household AC p ower .
Buzzing Sound in Audio Systems and Radios Some inexpensive stereo systems and AM-FM radios have inadequate internal power supply filtering and “buzz” slightly when powere d by the XPower Pocket Powerpack 100. Generally , the only solution is an audio product with a higher quality filter .
Recharging the P owerpack When household AC power is available, the Powerpack can be rechar ged using the AC Charger . Y ou can also charge the Powerpack using the inverter module with th e DC input cable while you drive you r vehicle. T o recharge the Powerpack using househ old power: 1.
Figure 6 Charging the P owerpack with A C Power AC charger input.
T o recharge the Powerpack using a vehicle’ s 12 V outlet: 1. If the inverter module is connected to the Powerpack, disconnect any devices plugged in to the inverter and disconnect th e inverter from the Powerpack. 2. If necessary , attach the vehicle power outlet adapter to the DC input cable.
6. Insert the DC in put cable into th e vehicle or airplane 12 V outlet. See Figure 7. While the Powerpack is r echarging, the blue LED flashes every two seconds. When the Powerpa ck is fully charged, the blue LED glows steadily . A typical recharge may take up to 1 1 hours.
7 T roubleshooting General PROBLEM: Measured inverte r output is too low . Inverter P owered by DC Input Cable PROBLEM: AC product will not operate , no in verter lights are ON . P ossible cause Remedy Stan dard “aver age- reading” AC voltmeter used to measure output voltage, resulting in an apparent reading 5 to 15 V too low .
