1 1 - 1 1 Introduction Overview The Brother print server allows you r Brother printer to be shared on a 10/100 Mb Ethernet Network and provides printing services for Windo ws ® 95/98/Me, Windows NT ® 4.0, Windows ® 2000/XP supporting the TCP/IP protocols and Macintosh ® supporting TCP/IP.
Introduction 1 - 2 1 Types of network connection Generally speaking, there are two types of networ k connection: Peer-to-Peer environment and a Network Shared environment. Network connection example Peer-to-Peer printing using TCP/IP In a Peer-to-Peer environment, each comp uter direct ly sends and receives data to and from the Brothe r printer.
Introduction 1 - 3 1 Network shared printing In a network shared environment, each computer sends and receives data t o and from the Brother printer via a centrally controlled computer. This type of computer is often called a “server” or a “pri nt server”.
Introduction 1 - 4 1 Protocols TCP/IP protocols and functionalit ies Protocols are the standardized sets of rules for transmi tting data on a network. Proto cols allow the user to gain access to network connected resources.
Introduction 1 - 5 1 Port9100 Another commonly used printing pro tocol on a TCP/IP network. SMTP client Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) client is used to send e-mails via Internet or Intranet. IPP Internet Printing Protocol (IPP Version 1.0) allows you to print documents directly to any accessible printer via the internet.
2 2 - 1 2 Configuring your network printer Overview Before using your Brother printe r in a network environment, you must configure the TCP/IP setting s. In this chapter, you will learn the basic steps required to print over the network using the TCP/IP pro tocol.

5 5 - 1 5 Internet printing for Windows ® Overview Windows ® 2000/XP users can print using TCP/IP using the standard Network Printing software and IPP protocol software built into any Wind ows ® 2000/XP installation. Note • You must configure the IP address on your prin ter before you proceed with this chapter.
Internet pr inting for Windows ® 5 - 2 5 Note If you hav e edited the hosts file on your comp uter or are using Domain Name System, you can also enter the DNS name of the print server. As the print server supports TCP/IP and NetBIOS names, you can also enter the NetBIOS name of the print server.

Control panel setup 7 - 3 7 TCP/IP This menu has eight sections: TCP/IP ENABLE , IP ADDRESS , SUBNET MASK , GATEWAY , IP BOOT TRIES , IP METHOD , APIPA and IPV6 . ■ TCP/IP ENABLE You can enable and disable the TCP/IP pro tocol. ■ IP ADDRESS= This field displays the current IP a ddress of the printer.
Control panel setup 7 - 4 7 •R A R P The Brother print server IP address can be configured using the Reverse ARP (RARP) facility on your host computer.
Control panel setup 7 - 5 7 In order to enable BOOTP, simply use an edito r to delete the “#” (if there is no “#”, then BOOTP is already enabled).
Control panel setup 7 - 6 7 NETBIOS/IP You can enable and disable the NetBIOS fa cility to obtain the IP address. ENET Ethernet link mode. AUTO allows the print server to operate in 100BASE-TX full or half duplex, or in 10BASE-T full or half duplex mode by auto negotiation.

Control panel setup 7 - 8 7 Disabling the APIPA protocol If the APIPA protocol is enabled, the print server will au tomatically allocate a Link-Local IP address in the range (169.254.1.0 - 169.254.254 .255) when the print server cannot ob tain an IP address through the IP METHOD you have set.
8 8 - 1 8 Troubleshooting Overview This chapter describes procedures for troubleshooting problems you may encounter with a Brother print server, it is divided into the following sections: ■ General .
Troubleshooting 8 - 2 8 2 Check to see if there is a ny LED activity. Brother print servers have two L EDs on the back panel of the machine. The upper green LED shows Link/Activity (Received /Transmit) status. The lower orange LED shows Speed status. • No light: If the upper LED is off, then the print server is not connected to the network.

Troubleshooting 8 - 5 8 Printing problems Print job is not printed Make sure the status and configu ration of the print server. Check following: 1 Make sure that the printer is p owered on, is on-line and ready to print.

Troubleshooting 8 - 8 8 Windows ® 2000/XP IPP troubleshooting I want to use a different Po rt number other than 631. If you are using Port 631 for IPP printing, you may find that your firewall may not let the print data through. If this is the case, use a different port number (port 80 ), or configure your Firewall to allow Port 631 data through.
