7 2 2 Loading paper and print media 2 The machine can feed pa per from the standard paper tray or manual fee d slot. When you put paper into the p aper tray, note the following: If your ap plication soft ware supports paper size selection on the print menu, you can select it th rough the software.
Chapter 2 8 b While pressin g the green pape r-guide release lever (1), slide the pa per guides to fit the pa per size you are lo ading in the tray. Make su re that the guid es are firmly in the slots. c Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfee ds.

Loading paper in the manual feed slot 2 You can load envelopes and spe cial print media one at a time into this slot. Use the manual feed sl ot to print or co py on labels, envelopes or thicker paper.

20 4 How to copy 4 The following steps sh ow the basic copy operation. For details about each op tion, see the Advanced User's Guide on the CD-ROM. a Load your do cument face down on the scanner glass. (See Using the sca nner glass on page 19. ) b If you make a single copy, press Start .
21 5 5 Printing a document 5 The machine ca n receive data from your computer and print it. To print from a computer, install the printer dr iver. (See Printing for Windows ® or Printing and Faxing for Macintosh in the Software User's Guide for the details about the print settings.

How to scan to a computer 23 6 e Set the file t ype for saving to a folder. By default, the scanne d data is saved as JPEG (*.jpg) . Click Configuration , and then select Button settings , Scan and File . The configuration dialog box appears. You can change the default setting s.

How to scan to a computer 25 6 Changing the SCAN key settings 6 Before scanning 6 To use the mac hine as a scanner, install a scanne r driver. If the machine is on a network, configure it with a TCP/IP address. Install the MFL-Pro Suit (including scanner dr ivers) on the Installation CD-ROM.

(See Replacing the toner cartrid ge on page 29 and Replacing the drum un it on page 35.) To avoid a ny inconv enience, you may want to buy spare c onsumable ite ms before the ma chine stops printing.
Routine maintenan ce 29 A Replacing the toner cartridge A Model Name: For the mo del name of toner cartridges, see Replacing the consumab le items on page 28. The Standard toner cart ridge can print approximately 700 pages (TN-2015) or 1,200 pages (TN-2215) 1 .
30 Toner Low A Toner Low If the LCD shows Toner Low , buy a new toner cartridge and have it r eady before you get a Replace Toner message. Replace Toner A When the follow ing message appe ars on the LCD, you need to replace the tone r cartridge: Replace Toner The machine will stop printing until you replace t he toner cart ridge.
Routine maintenan ce 31 A CAUTION HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will b e extremely hot. When you op en the front o r back cover (back ou tput tray) of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration.
32 WARNING DO NOT put a toner cartridge int o a fire. It could explode, resulting in injuries. DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammo nia, alcoho l, any type o f spray or any t ype of flamma ble substanc e to clean th e inside or o utside of the machine.
Routine maintenan ce 33 A Note • Be sure to se al up the toner c artridge tightly in a suitable bag so that tone r powder does not spill ou t of the cartridge. • Discard the used con sumable according to local regulations, keeping it separate from domestic waste.
34 g Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit so th at it locks in to place. If you put it in correctly, the green lock lever will lift automatically. h Clean the primary coro na wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right t o left several times.
Routine maintenan ce 35 A Note After repla cing the toner c artridge, DO NOT turn off the machine's power switch or open the front cover until the LCD returns to Ready mode.
36 CAUTION HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. When you open the fron t or back cover (b ack output tray) of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration. If you do this, you may burn yourself.
Routine maintenan ce 37 A WARNING DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire. It could explode, resulting in inju ries. DO NOT use c leaning materials that contain ammonia, alcohol, any type of spray, or any type of flammable su bstance to clean the outside or inside of th e machine.
38 Note If you choose not to return your u sed consumable, please discard the used consumable according to local regulations, keeping it separate from domestic waste. If you have questions, call your local waste disp osal office. Be sure to reseal the consumable items tightly so that the material inside does no t spill.
Routine maintenan ce 39 A g Clean the corona wire of the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times. CAUTION Be sure to re turn the green tab to the home position ( a ) (1). If you do not, printed pa ges may have a vertical stripe.
40 Cleaning the machine A Clean the outside and inside of the machine regularly with a dry, lint-free soft cloth. When you replace the toner cartridg e or the drum unit, make sure that you cl ean the insi de of the machine.
Routine maintenan ce 41 A e Wipe the inside and the ou tside of the paper tray with a dry, lint-free soft clot h to remove dust. f Re-load the paper and pu t the paper tray firmly back in the machine. g Plug the machine’s powe r cord back into the electrical socket first, connect all cables.
42 Cleaning the corona wire A If you have print quality proble ms, clean the corona wire as follows: a Open the front cover and leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to cool down. WARNING HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot.
Routine maintenan ce 43 A c Clean the co rona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from right to left and left to right several times. Note Be sure to return the tab to the home position ( a ) (1). If you do not, print ed pages may have a ve rtical stripe.
44 f Using both hands, slide the manual feed paper guides to the width of the pap er that you are go ing to use. g Using both hand s, put one pi ece of A4 or Letter size paper in the manual feed slot until the top edge of the paper touches the paper feed roller.
Routine maintenan ce 45 A If the problem is not solved yet, follow the steps below. a Open the front cover and leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to cool down . WARNING HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will b e extremely hot.
46 c Push down the green lock lever an d take the toner cartridge ou t of the drum unit. IMPORTANT • To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the sh aded parts sh own in the illustrations below. • To preve nt damage to the machine f rom static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.
Routine maintenan ce 47 A e Turn the drum un it gear by hand w hile looking at the surface of the OPC drum (1). f When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the print samp le, wipe the surfa ce of the OPC dr um with a dry cotton swa b until the du st or glue o n the surface comes off.
48 Cleaning the paper pick-up rollers A If you have pap er feed problems, clean the pick-up rollers as foll ows: a Turn off the machine. Un plug the power cord from the electrical socket.
49 B B Error and maintenance messages B As with any sophisticated office product, errors may o ccur and consumable items may need to be replaced. If this happens, yo ur machine identifies the error or req uired routine maintenance an d shows the appro priate message.
50 Fuser Error The temperature of the fuser unit does not rise to a specified temperature within th e specified time. Turn the power switch off, wait a few seconds, and then turn it on again . Leave the machine for 15 minute s with the power turned on.
Troubleshooting 51 B Print Unable XX (XX = Error Code) The machine has a mecha nical problem. Do one of the following: Disconnect the machin e from the AC power outlet for several mi nutes, then reconnect it. If the problem continue s, call your Brother dealer.
52 Paper Jams B Paper is jammed in the standard paper tray B If the LCD shows Jam Tray , follow these steps: a Pull the paper tray co mpletely out of the machine.
Troubleshooting 53 B Paper is jammed at the back of the machine B If the LCD shows Jam Rear , a paper jam occurred behind the back co ver. Follow these steps: a Open the front cover.
54 IMPORTANT • We recommend that you place th e drum unit and the toner cartridg es on a clean, flat surface with a sheet of disposab le paper or cloth un derneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner. • To prevent d amage to the machine caused by sta tic electricity , DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.
Troubleshooting 55 B e Using both hands, gently pu ll the jammed paper out of the fu ser unit. f Close the fuser cover an d the back cover (fac e-up output tray). g Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in to the machine. h Close the front cove r.
56 c Slowly take out the drum unit and ton er cartridge assembly. The jammed paper may be pulled out with th e drum unit an d toner cartridge assembly, or this may release the paper so you can pull it out of the inside of the machine. If you cann ot remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly easily, do not use extra force.
Troubleshooting 57 B e Put the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put the cartridge in correctly, the green lock lever will lift automatically. f If you were able to remo ve the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly and the jammed paper, you have cleared the paper jam.
58 i If you could not pull the jamme d paper out of the output tray op ening as shown in step g , take the paper tray completely out of the machine. j Pull the jammed paper out of the pa per tray opening. k Put the paper tray back into the machine. If you have removed the jammed paper, you have cleare d the paper jam.
Troubleshooting 59 B Paper is jammed in the Duplex Tray B If the LCD shows Jam Duplex , follow these steps: a Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to cool down. CAUTION HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will b e extremely hot.
60 c Pull the jammed paper out of the machine or the duplex tray. d Make sure that no pa per remains under the machine. e Put the duplex tray ba ck in the machine.
Troubleshooting 61 B If you are having diffi culty with your machine B If you think the re is a problem with your mac hine, check t he chart below a nd follow the troubleshooting tips. Most problems can be easily resolve d by yourself. If you need additional he lp, the Broth er Solutions Center offers the latest FAQs and troubleshoot ing tips.
62 The machine prints unexpectedly or it prints garbage. Press Job Cancel to cancel print jobs. Check the settings in your application to make sure it is set up to work with your machine. Pull out the paper tray and wait until t he machine stops printing.
Troubleshooting 63 B Paper handling difficulties Difficulties Suggestions The machine does not feed paper. The LCD shows No Paper or a Paper Jam message. If there is no paper, load a new stack of paper into the paper tray. If there is paper in the paper tray, make sure it is straight.
64 Improving the print quality B If you have a p rint quali ty problem, mak e a copy first (p ut a documen t on the scan ner glass and press Start ). If the printout looks good, the problem is prob ably not the machine. Check the interface cable connection s or try printing a different do cument.
Troubleshooting 65 B Grey background Make sure that you use paper that meets our sp ecifications. See Acceptable pa per and othe r print media on page 15. Check the machin e’s environment. Conditio ns such as high temperatures and high humidi ty can increase the amount of background shading.
66 Hollow print Make sure that you use paper that meets our specifications. See Acceptable paper and othe r print media on page 15. Choose Thick Pap er mode in the prin ter driver, choose Thick in the machine’s Paper Type men u setting or use thinner pap er than you are currentl y using.
Troubleshooting 67 B White lines, bands or ribbing across the page Check the machin e's environment. Conditi ons such as high humidity and high temp eratures may cause this print quality problem. If the problem is no t solved afte r printing a few pag es, put in a new drum unit.
68 Black lines down the page Printed pages h ave toner stains down the pag e. Clean the corona wire i nside the drum unit by slid ing the green tab. See Cleaning the co rona wire on page 42. Make sure the green tab of the coron a wire is at the home position ( a ).
Troubleshooting 69 B Curled or wavy Check the paper type and quality. High temper atures and high humidity will cause paper to curl. See Acceptable paper an d other print media on page 15. If you do not use the ma chine often, the paper may ha ve been in the paper tray too long.
70 Envelope creases Make sure that the two green envelope le vers inside the back cover are pulled down when you print the envelope . Note When you have finished pri nting, open the back cover an d reset the two green levers back to their original position.
Troubleshooting 71 B Poor fixing Open the back cover and make sure that th e two green envelope levers on the left and right hand sid es are in the up position. Choose Improve Toner Fixi ng mode in the printer driver. See Other Print Options (for Windows ® ) or Print Settings (For Macintosh) in the Software User's Guide .
